It often happens that as a result of an oversight or falling of an object, scratches and chips are formed on the tabletop. When you find yourself in this situation, we advise you not to get upset, because the problem is completely solvable. Often scratches on the surface of the countertop occur due to the use of abrasive products for cleaning it, as well as from cutting products directly on its surface. Usually, the restoration of acrylic stone countertops when shallow scratches appear, it is enough to clean them with an abrasive, and then polish with a felt material using a paste and a special tool. Consider the important points when carrying out work, since an artificial stone can have a different composition, all kinds of defects, and the repair methods are different.

Repair of minor injuries

Usually, such a type of work as the restoration of an artificial countertop, implies its initial inspection by a master, followed by procedures for restoring the countertop.

Repair of artificial stone countertops is carried out both on the spot, in case the damage is small, and with removal to the production facility, if significant intervention is required.

When shallow scratches or spots appear on the surface that cannot be removed, then a sander with a fine abrasive wheel will help. Problems such as stains from various chemical detergents and hot burns to the surface, as well as minor scratches, can be removed with your own hands.

To do this, you need a polyester compound designed specifically for this. Scratches can be sanded, first with medium, and then with the finest emery cloth. Then it should be polished. Very gently, slowly and carefully with a soft felt cloth, until the original appearance is restored.

In this case, restorers use a grinding machine with a felt attachment. But when doing DIY repairs, it is better to use a felt cloth. You need to be careful if the countertop is made of acrylic with a small coating of artificial stone. In this case, no surface grinding is performed.

In order to restore its original strength and beauty, the work must be carried out by qualified personnel. Otherwise, self-intervention in the repair of a surface made of quartz agglomerate may lead to a further increase in the cost of restoration work or to the purchase of a new countertop. Restoring and repairing an artificial tabletop is a rather laborious process.

We use glue to repair artificial countertops

For the repair of products made of artificial stone, special repair kits are available for sale, which include special compositions for puttying and sealing chips of the countertop.

The order of work consists in cutting a groove with a grinder with a diamond disc. Cleaning and degreasing the surface near the area to be repaired.

A top layer of acrylic faux stone powder comes in handy to add to a two-component polyester adhesive. The area to be treated is degreased, deepened and expanded. Next, a clem for repairing a countertop made of artificial stone, which is matched by color, evenly fill the resulting depression and remove the excess. After that, you will need to withstand the time required for the mixture to harden for about a day.

After that, the entire surface is ground and polished. Then we get a perfectly smooth surface.

As a rule, there is usually no need to dismantle the product; restoration of artificial stone countertops is carried out at home. It also happens that there is a need to replace the constituent elements in low-quality products.

Repair of large cracks

Restoring kitchen countertops that have defects such as chips requires patches made from the same material as the countertop itself. After cutting out the problem area, a piece of stone treated with glue is inserted into the resulting niche. Then this part is polished and does not stand out from the general background.

Deep cracks and splits in the decorative stone are sealed with pieces of a suitable material for gluing it in and further polishing and polishing.

It is quite difficult to select the material, since the color gamut has a huge difference, but approximately it is possible, and even after polishing, even a slightly different glued piece will not be very noticeable, since the stone, although artificial, does not have a uniform color.

In specialty stores they sell repair kits with different colors of crumbs and fillers and two-component colorless glue. Such restoration of a decorative countertop is quite difficult and requires certain skills.

Features of repair of agglomerate countertops

The situation is more complicated with the agglomerate countertop. Quite expensive agglomerate countertop is very durable and almost not subject to scratches and chips, since it is 90% marble or quartz, and this is its main advantage. But if in some unthinkable way you managed to beat off a corner on it or make a chip, then it is easier and cheaper to replace it with a new acrylic one than to repair it.

Most often, defects on products made of quartz agglomerate are chips that can appear when heavy or sharp objects hit the surface or the end of the product. Further in the article we will consider the elimination of just such defects.

For restoration, special restoration materials are used.

With a slight chip (less than 1 mm), it is expanded so that the adhesive composition has the opportunity to connect to the structure of the stone after drying.

The adhesive is made on the basis of polyester resin, with the addition of quartz dust and a coloring pigment. After drying, the remnants of the glue are removed with a blade, and then the treated surface area is wiped with alcohol.

Grinding and polishing the surface of the quartz agglomerate is fraught with loss of uniformity of the glossy coating.

Repair of microcracked countertops

Small defects such as microcracks and abrasions can be easily corrected by grinding the surface of a countertop made of artificial stone, which is better to entrust to a specialist. Starting with coarse sandpaper, the main part of the defect is removed using a grinding machine. In the future, the work is completed with the help of a polishing paste and a special attachment.

Also, on the surface of the countertop, if the equipment is inserted incorrectly, microcracks may appear, which are not immediately visible, but over time they increase and become very noticeable, which greatly spoils the appearance of the stone surface.

Such microcracks are repaired with acrylic-based glue, which is used to fill the crack after pretreatment. At the final stage, grinding is also performed.

Folk remedies for the restoration of countertops

While there are other methods of repairing cracks on an acrylic surface, they require special materials, tools and skills that most people do not know professionally.

Consider DIY furniture repair options, which even a beginner can easily use!

Restoration using scoring super glue

First, you should visit a specialty store for super glue or two-part glue. This method works best against micro cracks and chips. Cracks on artificial stone countertops, sealed with superglue.

Clean the cracks with a toothbrush and hydrogen peroxide. If dark spots do not clear up, use a chlorine-based detergent. Then rinse with alcohol or thinner, for example.

Apply a thin layer of superglue to the crack surface.

Do not work on a countertop for at least 2 hours. During this period, the glue will penetrate the crack and harden. The work must be done very carefully and use scotch tape in work.

Restoration method using adhesive

Repairing cracks on hard surfaces with two-component epoxy filler can be faster, easier, and more reliable than using glue, especially when repairing wide cracks in a countertop.

Gather all the necessary tools and supplies:

  • denatured alcohol;
  • two-component epoxy adhesive;
  • several colors that match the base shade and stains on the countertop;
  • several wooden ice cream sticks;
  • several brushes and brushes;
  • sanding discs and a couple of rags and sponges.

If you have a piece of the original countertop material, rub it with a file and save it for later mixing with the filler. Proceed in the following order:

  • Clean and degrease cracks with an alcohol solvent.
  • Place two drops of epoxy adhesive and hardener on a disposable surface. Use just enough to fill the cracks.
  • Mix paint and / or shavings from the original countertop material with a drop of glue, bringing to the desired color. Then mix with hardener.
  • Apply epoxy glue to the cracks, spreading it out with a wooden stick, and leave the filler slightly convex to the countertop.

We recommend using tape when working with glue.

Look at the applied adhesive. If the color isn't quite right, or is too dense to blend into the pattern, add a few drops of paint to match the stains on the countertop. Be patient, don't overdo it. Take a step to the side for an overall impression.

Leave the filler to cure according to the manufacturer's instructions. When the filler is completely hardened, start sanding the surface with fine sandpaper.

Furniture dyes

Used to mask small scratches. It is a tube that is closed with a lid with a brush, like nail polish.

It is applied in one or several layers until the defect is completely eliminated. The excess is removed with the edge of the plastic card, and the surface itself is polished with felt or soft cloth. It is difficult to find the ideal color, so you can add the missing texture with an ordinary felt-tip pen and cover it with furniture varnish. Ideally, use a spray varnish that is applied evenly and does not leave a visible edge of the composition.

For these purposes, there are both professional and folk methods. The latter have an important nuance - before using them on a visible surface, you need to test the method on an inconspicuous area, so as not to create even more problems.

The use of furniture wax during restoration

Waxes are soft and hard and differ significantly. Soft wax has many more colors and is easier to apply. But solid is more reliable in further operation. It can be used for large dents or even chips. Used as a quick and easy way to restore furniture.

Soft furniture wax can be easily heated even with your fingers and can be easily applied to the problem area.

The excess can be easily removed with a metal spatula. The surface can then be varnished with an appropriate gloss level.

This method is intended for areas not exposed to constant exposure and is temporary!

Hard wax

This is a more durable and more expensive professional tool, so working with it will require some skill. Usually professionals use a special soldering iron.

Before self-repair, hard wax is melted, for example, with a lighter or a construction hairdryer. The molten composition is applied to the scratches. After that, you need to wait about a minute until the product hardens, and then cut off the remnants with a blade. Polish the surface to hide any traces of the restoration.
