As you know, brushes are the main source of the hammer drill. It is important to monitor their condition and the cleanliness of the collector. In the Makita 2450 and 2470 rotary hammers, the CB-419 carbon brushes art.191962-4 are used. It is recommended to replace the factory carbon brushes after 80 hours of operation. Both brushes must be replaced, regardless of the degree of wear.
Signs of wear on brushes
Do not confuse the usual small sparking that is present when working with partial skipping of sparks in a circle, this is permissible under loads and the new tool has no brushes yet.
The first signs of wear on the brushes are strong sparking and extraneous sound. Stop working immediately!
Timely replacement of carbon brushes prevents damage to more expensive parts of the rock drill. The cost of a set of carbon brushes is incomparable with the cost of a rotor or stator of any power tool. You should not save on small things, so as not to lose more. The takeaway is simple: change your carbon electric brushes more often. Do not forget, if one brush fails, the other should change automatically.
The critical length of the Makita perforator carbon brushes cannot be less than 8 mm
When replacing, it is worth taking a closer look at the anchor, what is the collector output. If there is a noticeable deepening, the collector should be sanded to an even state, if this is not done, then even the original new brushes will sparkle, which will lead to even greater burnout of the collector.
After installing new brushes, be sure to let it idle without load for at least 10 minutes.

The procedure for performing work on the manufacture of carbon from other brushes
Charcoal power brushes are available at almost any power tool store. But there are times when there is no store nearby, but you have to work. There is a way out: you need to make brushes yourself from brushes from other power tools. An important point is the selection of an electric brush that is similar in its characteristics. An improperly sized carbon rod will cause severe arcing or an anchor failure.

The process of making carbon brushes for the Makita hammer drill
The work begins with the preparatory stage. It is necessary to choose the correct section of the coal rod blank. Here are the dimensions in mm (6 × 9 × 12) of factory CB-419A carbon brushes. The selected carbon rods should be in a larger section or the same size as those used in Makita perforators.
If you have picked up blanks of a larger section, they are filed with files or using sandpaper. But you can use a fairly simple device. A special device called a "fungus" is clamped into the electric drill. Almost every master has this device. It is used in the process of grinding surfaces. The device is a circle with Velcro, on which a grinding disc of the required diameter is attached.
Try to securely attach the drill to a workbench or table. The drill can be secured with clamps, clamps, or a temporary fixture. Insert the fungus into the drill chuck, fix a circle of # 100 sandpaper on it.

Turn on the drill and adjust the chuck rotation speed. It is preferable to start sanding at a low speed. This will allow you to properly control the sanding process.

Check the dimensions of the carbon brushes at all times. The cross-sectional dimensions of the electric brushes are especially important. The brushes should fit tightly into the brush holder, but move freely.

Homemade electric brushes
We find a suitable material, cut it to size with a margin of 2 mm. Then we bring it to the desired size on emery. It is recommended to use the contacts of old brushes as the top contact on the wire, soldering them to the contact wire, if any.
If there is no contact group, to fix the wire, a hole of a smaller diameter is drilled in the electric brush than the diameter of the copper braid. The braid is twisted, inserted into the drilled hole and wedged on the opposite side with copper wire. Everything is ready, we install and check for sparking.
