Finishing the foam block inside is a necessary stage in the construction of a residential building. Finished blocks are more durable and last longer. And in order to do everything right, you need not only to choose the right plaster, but also strictly observe all stages of the work.
The material for decorating a house made of foam blocks inside is quite different from standard plaster options, and its finishing may seem quite complicated for a not too experienced performer. However, it is impossible to do without the stage of finishing work when arranging a foam block building, since the advantages of blocks in the form of low thermal conductivity and low weight are reduced when moisture enters them. Protection of walls with plaster prevents cracks and various defects from appearing on their surface. Therefore, the answer to the question of whether it is necessary to plaster the foam block can seriously affect the decorative and heat-shielding characteristics of the walls, and the period of time remaining until the next repair.

Features of the internal protection of the foam block
Plastering is not only the fastest, but also the simplest option for finishing the foam block inside. Although, due to the too smooth surface of the blocks, this material will be relatively poorly adhered to. Unless, of course, you do not use a special application technology that allows the coating not to crumble even several years after the completion of the repair work. In addition, the contractor is required to follow the instructions exactly, observing the layer thickness (from 10 to 20 mm), suitable for maintaining the heat-insulating properties of the material.

However, the quality of work depends not only on the plaster, but also on the foam blocks themselves. Wall material can be made by casting - in this case, its surface must be sanded. For blocks made by sawing, no special processing is required. Often, the adhesion of the finish to the walls is increased with the help of a special reinforcing mesh.
Regardless of the method of obtaining the block, the answer to the question whether it is possible to plaster foam blocks with cement mortar will be negative. Plasters based on cement and lime are not suitable for such work. The poor interaction of these components with concrete does not provide sufficient strength to the resulting finish, which crumbles almost immediately, only thanks to the metal mesh can the mortar be kept on the wall.
If you need to save money and increase the strength of the finish, using cement mixtures, you can use conventional (and inexpensive compared to any plasters) tile glue. Having a high degree of adhesion to the surface, it will provide adhesion to foam concrete even of an inappropriate material. The main recommendations for plastering foam blocks with tile adhesive indicate the possibility of making a reinforcing layer from it and a special mesh before applying cement mixtures.

Preparation for work
Before starting work on finishing foam concrete, you should make sure that at least 30 days have passed since the production of wall materials. During this period, cracks and defects may appear on the surface and inside the material. Therefore, even before plastering, it is advisable to process such block deformations that can affect the quality of further finishing.
When choosing how to plaster foam blocks inside the house, you should purchase a mesh, a primer, fasteners, a spatula, brushes, a plumb line and knives. The list is supplemented by a chisel, a drill, a plumb line and a special metal brush, a building level for checking the evenness of surfaces and a bowl in which the solution will be diluted.
At the same stage of work, you should also select a mixture for plastering foam blocks, which should have the following parameters:
- high elasticity;
- good vapor permeability;
- water and frost resistance.
You can find suitable materials in the corresponding sections of online markets or ordinary home improvement stores. The most popular among them are mixtures of the Pobedit, Ivsil and EuroMix brands. The products of these brands are conveniently brought into the necessary condition for work and are suitable for foam blocks.
The next stage of work is surface preparation for finishing. It consists in thoroughly cleaning the walls from dust, dirt and debris. For this, a metal brush is used, which can be attached to an electric drill for increased convenience. A tool rotating at a high speed will clean the prepared surface several times faster.

After cleaning, proceed as follows:
- The surface is primed (in 1 or 2 layers) to eliminate cracks and deformations of foam concrete, as well as to improve the adhesive properties of the material.
- After the first layer of primer has dried, a second one is applied.
- Having finished the second layer, go to the putty.

Plastering
In order to prepare a dry mixture for plastering foam blocks, it is stirred in a previously prepared container (tank or barrel) using a drill and a special nozzle. The finished material is applied with a spatula from top to bottom, observing the recommended thickness and maximum uniformity of distribution. After the first passage of the wall, you should wait for the layer to dry and only then apply the second one.

If you install a grid for plastering the foam block before starting work, the mixture will set much better. If the finish is thick enough (up to 2 cm), it is advisable to choose metal reinforcement. In other cases, fiberglass mesh is sufficient.
The final stage
The work on the interior decoration of the walls made of foam blocks can be considered almost finished. Now the contractor is only required to wait for the final drying of the plaster, after which you can start decorative finishing work - for example, wallpapering or painting the enclosing structures, finishing them with plasterboard or wooden panels.
For painting on foam block walls, paints are suitable, the packaging of which indicates the possibility of using this material. Most often they are made on a silicone or silicate base and have maximum vapor permeability. With the help of such paints or another option (wallpaper or panels), the decoration will be completed, and the repair and construction work will be one more step closer to completion.
