Stained-glass windows in the interior always look attractive, add status and originality to the design. Previously, stained glass was available only to fairly rich people, at the moment it is possible to create stained glass with your own hands, since modern materials and technologies have appeared that allow you to do this without the use of complex tools and skills.

A bit of history

Initially, stained glass windows were assembled from small pieces of glass left after the creation of a single piece. They were fastened to each other with metal strips. Such glasses were used not only as decoration, but also as a product capable of covering the required area. This was due to the impossibility of making a product of the required size.

Italian craftsmen used transparent minerals as glasses, then covered them, for example, with alabaster. This helped protect the room from the sun by creating shade. Later, red, yellow and blue glasses appeared, from which an intricate pattern could be folded. Stained-glass windows were dearly valued, they served as an adornment of rich houses and cathedrals.

How are modern stained glass windows created?

Modern stained-glass windows are made using completely different technologies. They can be produced at the factory or made by amateurs with their own hands. Glasses of different colors are used to create a classic stained glass window. The drawing is cut out exactly according to the sketches, then the parts are connected using an H-shaped lead profile.

Such designs have thick and bright outlines, the line of which is well defined. The appearance of such stained glass windows is familiar: they can be found in old cathedrals. In a modern interior, such designs can be used not only for exterior glass, but also for interior partitions and doors. The minimalist style is very popular.

Tiffany typesetting technology

A stained glass window in the interior is often used made by typesetting technology. Such stained glass windows are called tiffany, they appeared in the USA in the 19th century. Parts are also cut out of the glass of the desired color according to the sketch, the connection is made by soldering copper foil and a special tape, which the glass is wrapped around the perimeter. The result is a single unit that can be used as stained glass.

The technology allows using not only traditional glass, but also textured surfaces, elements of non-standard shape, for example, convex ones. You can create such decor yourself if you wish. They are often decorated with windows, interior partitions, lamps, ceilings.

Sandblasting technology, etching application

Fusing is a modern technology that can be used to create stained glass. In the 90s it was invented in Germany. The main feature is the method of joining the fragments: they are not soldered, but sintered using a high temperature. For this, the parts must be laid out on a flat surface, then it is heated until the glass becomes soft and the individual fragments begin to solder to each other. When the elements are firmly connected, they are allowed to cool.

Stained glass created using this technology does not have noticeable metal seams, it is fashionable, and is often used for interior decoration. Borders between elements are not striking, the colors have a smooth transition to each other. Stained glass looks like a solid, slightly blurred picture. Such designs are suitable for rooms with high humidity, since they do not contain elements that can oxidize. In addition, they are suitable for use in showcases and windows, since the connection of the parts of the stained-glass window is tight and tight. This technology is also used to create lamps, decorative elements, and decorate various furniture.

A way to create a large composition of several elements

A modern stained glass window can be a large composition that was impossible to create in the past. The technique itself resembles fusing, as it involves the use of metal outlines. The parts are laid out on a special glass substrate, the material is stirred in special cells, after which the mold is heated, and it is filled with liquid material, which is firmly sintered with metal elements. For greater strength and an attractive look, the metal contours are rounded. Outwardly, such a stained glass window is quite similar to the old one.

There is another method of factory production of large stained glass windows. For this, transparent glass is used, which is etched in a special way. This way you can get almost any image on the glass of the required area. To obtain the desired color, the glass in the places where the drawing should be is treated with hydrofluoric acid. The image is dull. If such glass is illuminated from the end, the matte areas will glow from the inside, creating a magnificent look and introducing originality into the design.

There is another option for creating a picture - sandblasting. It is less attractive in appearance than etching, but it is easier to perform and cheaper. Its essence is that jets of sand knock down the top layer of glass, creating a matte surface. Most often, stained-glass windows created in this way are used to decorate interior doors and partitions, they can be used in kitchens and bathrooms where high humidity is noted.

More rare ways to make stained glass:

  • Facet is a method in which a chamfer is cut from the glass and thus a pattern is created. The master carrying out such work must have the appropriate experience and knowledge, otherwise there is a great risk of damaging the glass. Glass cells are combined using a traditional metal frame. When light hits the facet, it is distorted, scattering a large number of glare. Stained-glass windows of this type look especially good on windows, doors of rooms where there is a lot of light.
  • Creating a stained glass window using film. Film technology is an inexpensive and affordable way for anyone to turn ordinary glass into stained glass. To do this, just stick the film of the desired color on the glass. To give a decorative look, a lead circuit is used. This decor is available for any interior. It is recommended to use glass decorated with a film indoors, since under the influence of rain and ultraviolet radiation, the film quickly loses light outside, becomes unattractive in appearance and requires renewal.

Glass, turned into stained glass with the help of a film, becomes more durable, when such glass is broken, its fragments will remain hanging on the film and will not fall on the floor.

To create a picture, you first need to make a sketch on paper, then the finished elements are cut out of the film. Films are produced in different colors, so you can choose any colors that you like and can be in harmony with your interior. The cut out parts are carefully applied to the glass, then outlined with a special outline, which can be bought in art stores. Such a stained-glass window does not like moisture, direct rays of the sun, so it is better to use it in dry and warm rooms. It is in perfect harmony with furniture, various interior items, suitable for modern and classic styles of room decoration.
