Plastering walls can be called one of the main types of work in any repair. And, as practice has shown, it is much easier to carry them out using special beacons, along which the surface of the plaster layer is leveled. This saves both material and time. And one of the most profitable and simple options for guides are string beacons, with the help of which you can even more noticeably reduce the cost of money and time.
String guide device
One of the easiest ways to make a string beacon is to screw ordinary self-tapping screws into the enclosing structures and wrap wire around them. In this case, the fasteners are kept on dowels, and its caps are in the same plane, but at a short distance from the wall surface. Usually 2-3 mm is enough to secure the wire.
After pulling on the guide, there is a small free space under it. To increase the reliability of the structure, it must be filled with a solution. Typically the same one that will be used for plastering.
Homemade option to expose the string under the plaster of the walls

There are the following options for placing the guides on the wall:
- mount kremmer for installing beacons:
- clips for plaster beacons;
- mount for beacons eared;
- installation of beacons on the solution;
- plastering walls without lighthouses;
- string method of aligning walls.
Advantages and features of string beacons
Among the advantages that are obtained through the use of string plaster beacons, the main thing is their cost and the minimum number of tools for installation. The second advantage is that wall decoration can be started immediately after the installation of the wire and its additional fixing with a plaster mixture. And the installation of the guides themselves can be carried out even by a performer who does not have much experience in such work.
The disadvantages of this method include:
- the need for an extremely accurate setting of self-tapping screws. the wrong position of their caps can affect the deviations of the guides and, accordingly, the entire plane of the plaster layer;
- the ability to accidentally bend the wire when tightening it around the screw head;
- increased requirements for accuracy when removing excess solution from the string after it is fixed. Careless actions can lead to bending of the plaster string.
The possibility of an uneven wall due to even small mistakes makes this method less attractive, especially for the inexperienced repairman. It should be noted that guides bent through carelessness need to be removed and replaced with new ones. This, in turn, increases the time to complete the work, but reduces the likelihood of a poor-quality result.
Features of mounting string beacons
The process of installing string beacons includes marking the base, checking the evenness of the walls and securing the guides themselves. This requires a small number of tools (hammer, screwdriver, pliers, wrench and plumb bob) and two "strings". It is allowed to use thin wire, fishing line or real strings for musical instruments as a string guide. In addition, you will need plaster mortar and 4 dowels with self-tapping screws.
Anchoring process
The principle of the method of how to attach string beacons to the wall is to pull the guides parallel to the floor. The distance between them should be less than the width of the rule. Therefore, the strings should be approximately 1000-1500 mm apart.
The installation process begins with the following steps:
- Drilling two holes for dowels at a distance of about 200 mm from the edge of one and the second wall at a selected height;
- Installing a dowel and screwing a self-tapping screw into it. The distance that is left for winding the wire depends on the thickness of the plaster layer. And she, in turn, is determined by the unevenness of the wall;
- Winding the wire onto the self-tapping screw located on the right;
- Fixing the string beacon by twisting it counterclockwise.
The next step in installing string beacons is to pull the wire and wind it with the left bolt - but in a clockwise direction. By twisting and unscrewing the screws, the guide “reaches out” in such a way as to make it as flat as possible. Further, the same procedure must be performed with the second string, placing it in the same plane with the first using a level and a plumb line.
After it turned out to put the beacons on the wall, it is necessary to throw a small amount of plaster under them to the level of the strings. After each throwing, the guide is cleaned and the plaster is allowed to dry slightly. The most reliable option that does not allow the beacon to bend is the device of three layers of solution. Installed and fixed strings are checked using a level and a rule. In this case, the latter should easily move along the guides.
Beacon installation technology step by step

After the plaster has started to set, the strings can be removed - and, moreover, together with self-tapping screws, which can rust and ruin the finish. And, when the solution that secures the guides is completely dry, the process of plastering along the strings begins. In this case, the traces of the lighthouses are neatly sealed with a plaster mixture.
Prices and reviews
Due to the fact that only screws and dowels are used during the installation of the guides, the cost of fasteners for the string beacon is minimal. The purchase of wire or strings is also inexpensive. A five-kilogram skein, which is usually enough for an entire apartment, costs 200–250 rubles.
The use of wire and string guides is a fairly popular method when performing plastering work, as you can find out by reading the reviews of the performers. From the point of view of users, the distance between the string beacons on the wall should be as small as possible so that it is more convenient to use the rule during the plastering process. And, according to others, this technique is far from suitable for everyone - when plastering the walls along the string, an inexperienced performer will receive a slightly higher consumption of material than expected, which does not remain on the rule, but falls to the floor.
