General information

Cleaning the primer can be done in different ways, depending on the type of contaminated surface and the composition of the primer impregnation. All methods can be classified into one of the following groups.

  1. Universal.
  2. Home or folk remedies.
  3. The use of professional chemicals.
  4. Cleaning with a steam generator.

Sometimes, in order to wash off primer stains, especially old ones, you have to use various types of products until the pollution is completely removed.

Try to wash off the stain as soon as it appears. It takes about 30 minutes for the primer to harden. After this time, it will be much more difficult to clean the contamination.

The primer has several varieties: composition for application under wallpaper, acrylic primer for paint, adhesion impregnations and phenolic primers for wood. Acrylic stains are easiest to remove.

  • A fresh stain from almost any surface can be cleaned with a cloth dampened in water.
  • Dried dirt must be soaked well, covered with wet rags and left for several hours. This will make the primer easier to separate from the glass or tile surface.
  • The dried stain must be greased with the same primer that caused the stain. After a while, it will swell and can be removed with a damp sponge or cloth.
  • Using a fine abrasive sponge is a good way to scrub the primer off the tile. But you should be prepared for the process to take a long time. Haste will damage the tile surface.
  • Use a scraper or blade to clean glass or ceramic tiles with a smooth surface. Before starting work, it is better to moisten the dirt with plenty of water. To avoid scratching, removal is done at an angle of 45 degrees.
  • You can clean the plastic windows and PVC window sills from the primer using a tool such as foam cleaner. The stains are liberally moistened with a cleaning compound and then removed with a scraper.
  • To dissolve the primer containing coloring pigments, acetone, "White spirit", gasoline and similar compositions are used.
  • Some types of primer can be cleaned with Mr. Muscle glass cleaner. Stains are best rubbed off smooth surfaces.
  • The easiest way to remove acrylic primer from floor tiles is to pour boiling water over the stains and wipe with a sponge. This method is unlikely to work with other types of primer.

Before you clean the tiles from the primer, it is advisable to test the selected method on its remains, if any are available after repair.

Home, or folk remedies

In almost every kitchen there is soda and vinegar essence, and this is exactly what you can use to clean the primer from glass and tiles.

To remove stains with regular baking soda, mix it with water. The resulting slurry is spread on dirt and after 10 minutes washed off with a sponge. In this case, soda acts as an alkali-based solvent and an abrasive agent at the same time.

The concentrated vinegar will help clean tiles, glass, and plastic surfaces. But it is only suitable for acid-resistant tiles. Therefore, if there is no confidence in the properties of the tile, it is better not to risk it. To remove the primer, vinegar essence is poured onto the stain and, after 10-15 minutes, wiped off with a rag. This procedure usually needs to be repeated several times. You can burn your lungs, so work with a mask.

Vinegar will not harm the skin, but concentrated vapors of the essence can burn the lungs. Therefore, it is necessary to work in a paint mask.

Steam generator

Using a home steam generator is also an option for how you can clean the primer from the tile. This method cannot be used to clean windows, as the glass will crack from uneven heating. The same trouble can await with glazed tiles. Therefore, in order to avoid problems, it is best to use a steam generator to clean only floor coverings.

The method of cleaning with a steam generator is that a jet of steam is directed at the stain and at the same time the primer is removed with a stiff brush.
