Plastic doors are popular due to their practicality, affordable cost, aesthetic qualities and high tightness. They are durable, do not require complex maintenance, and can be used in any technical and climatic conditions. Do-it-yourself installation of a plastic door is available to most buyers, which can significantly save money.
Where to start work?
Installation of plastic doors, like any other types of work of a similar profile, should begin with the preparation of the doorway. In addition, you will need to prepare the plastic structure itself for installation.
Most often, it is not required to expand or narrow the doorway, since plastic structures are made according to the dimensions provided by the customer and fit the selected opening perfectly. If you made a mistake with the dimensions, the opening can be adjusted so as not to order a new door. If he is busy with an old structure, it will need to be dismantled in any case; you also need to prepare the walls. To do this, remove excess plaster, dust, dirt, primer the surface.
Installation of plastic doors has a certain algorithm of work. You will not be able to correctly put the door in the assembled state, since it is heavy and with a high probability it can warp. Most often, the manufacturer supplies doors either assembled or does not insert a double-glazed window for ease of transportation. Before installation, you need to remove the door leaf from the frame, after which you can start installing the fasteners; you will need to screw the hinges to the frame.
If the doorway is prepared, you can begin to install the frame; without a door, it will be lightweight, easy to adjust and tilt. Installing PVC doors and securing them can be done in several ways:
On special brackets located on the back of the structure. For them, the box may have special grooves. If there are no grooves, you can use anchors; for this, the box will need to be drilled through. This method has certain disadvantages, since it weakens the reinforced part of the structure, and with inept installation, the frame can lead
Advice: such installation of plastic doors and windows can damage the structure and render it unusable, so it is better to trust it to professionals.
Another disadvantage of such an installation is that the fasteners will be noticeable, therefore the appearance of the structure will suffer significantly. At least three brackets for fastening are required on each side of the door frame.
The second, more convenient way, available not only for professionals, but also for amateurs, which will not harm the door structure, is to fix the frame on mounting foam. When using this method, you will have to wait until the foam dries and hardens. The frame itself should be placed on special stands, thanks to which it can be leveled until the foam has dried, even during operation. However, polyurethane foam requires additional protection from the external environment; it is required at least to be plastered
Tip: If you don't want to accidentally ruin the door, use foam to plant it. It will hold on tightly enough, and the risk of skewing the frame is practically excluded. In case of incorrect installation, you can dismantle the structure and try again or hire a specialist.
How to fix the box?
Installation of plastic doors begins with the installation of the box, for this you need to do the following:
- A door frame is inserted into the doorway prepared in advance. For convenience, it can be tilted, make sure that the edges of the product are at the same distance from the walls. This will guarantee a smooth installation of the door.
- You will need to prepare in advance a rack level, the size of which will be at least half a meter, several wedges with which you will level the structure. In addition, when mounting on bolts, you will need a hammer drill, drill, fasteners and a hammer. All this should be kept close at hand.
- Installation of plastic doors and windows is done in approximately the same way. First, the level is placed on the sill and wedges are driven under it. It is necessary to ensure that the box is perfectly level, otherwise the sash will quickly sag and will not be able to open normally, or problems with it will arise immediately. The same procedure is performed with the sides of the structure. They are knocked out with wedges, achieving an even location. You need to start fixing the door from the top of the doorway, then go to the bottom.
Advice: during installation, make sure that the box is pressed tightly against all the stops, and does not deviate from them. It is more convenient to do the work together.
The installation of plastic doors should not begin until you make sure that the box is in the correct position, does not deviate to one side, or skew. If there is a skew, the frame needs to be adjusted, check if it is standing correctly using the building level. It is more convenient to start installation from the side of the awnings from the top of the structure.
Tip: after you have installed the screws and dowels, do not tighten them tightly. You may need to adjust the door frame further.
It is very important that the box is level, especially if you decide to use dowels and anchors instead of foam. Anchors can bend the profile.
What to do after mounting the box?
Before installing the entire plastic door, you will need to assemble the side and seal the opening, otherwise the cold will not pass through the door, but through the gaps left between the wall and the frame during its installation. First of all, the door leaf is installed. Methods may differ depending on design features. Most often, the operation is performed as follows:
- The canvas is connected to the lower canopy, then tightly closed and the upper hinges are connected.
- If the door has a ventilation function, it is simply screwed onto the hinges.
How to seal the opening?
The last stage of work is sealing the doorway after installing the plastic door with your own hands. To do this, you will need to purchase mounting foam: with its help all the voids between the door frame and the wall are filled. Thus, you can not only get rid of cracks and make the structure airtight, but also more reliably fix the frame in its place.
Tip: in order for the foam to better grab onto surfaces, it is recommended to moisten them. Due to moisture, it is possible to ensure a faster reaction of the material, good adhesion.
The foam does not dry immediately. After the substance leaves the balloon, it expands significantly. The degree of expansion depends on the type and quality of the foam, do not be afraid of excess. Once they are dry and solid, you can trim off excess foam with a utility knife.
Conclusion: installing a plastic door with your own hands does not cause any particular difficulties. You will completely cope with the task yourself, and you will not have to pay for the installer's services.
