Not every specialist can be entrusted with such hard work as laying tiles on an apron. At the same time, it would be better to do everything on your own, which will be more reliable (of course, not a storm in the account of hiring highly qualified specialists, the cost of whose services will be several times higher than the price of materials). And here the main point is the study of the technology of work.

Thus, following the instructions of our specialists, you will even be surprised at how easy it is. Read in detail how to equip a beautiful kitchen apron.

Dimensions and material calculation

The first thing that needs to be done when laying tiles on an apron is affected is the size. In the future, based on them, correctly calculate the required amount of materials. In this case, you can take the standard parameters that have been used for decades as a guideline:

  1. The working area is usually 50-70 centimeters from the table top level up. At the same time, in some cases, work begins not from the countertop, but directly from the floor, which is influenced by personal preferences, as well as the location of the pedestals.
  2. When laying ceramic tiles, it is necessary to provide an overlap of the countertop on the coating by at least 2-3 centimeters.
  3. Considering the upper part, it should be noted that laying is carried out up to the hood (the installation of which is provided at a height of 65-70 centimeters from the plate.
  4. Usually, laying is carried out along the entire length of the wall, but in some cases, only the working area, the sink, and the stove can be taken into account.

The calculations themselves are carried out without fail, since without them it is impossible to predict how much material will be needed. Thus, for their implementation, it is necessary to determine the version of the apron that will fit.

Among all types, perhaps, we highlight the most common:

  1. Basic, or standard.
  2. With imitation of brickwork.
  3. Diagonal.

The basic becomes the simplest. It is also more economical as it reduces material consumption.

Important! Do not forget that no one is protected from errors, and sometimes material damage occurs. That is why it is necessary to provide for a margin of at least 10 percent.

Tools and materials

Now you should consider what accessories and materials will be needed to lay the apron tile in the kitchen with your own hands.

  1. First of all, this is a perforator that will be used to dismantle the old coating.
  2. The next tool will be a screwdriver, in combination with a special attachment - a construction mixer.
  3. Further, it is also worth noting containers, in particular, buckets for water and glue mixture.
  4. A set of spatulas is required to work with tiles. For a set of glue - narrow. For application and leveling - serrated, and for applying grout - rubber.
  5. As you know, the tiles should be laid out perfectly evenly, and therefore a plumb line and a building level (preferably several, small and large) are useful.
  6. A tile cutter is also useful, or, as an alternative, a grinder.
  7. You will need a rubber mallet or hammer to install, check the fit and fix the tiles.
  8. Crosses and pegs are required to form the seams.
  9. A pencil and a ruler for marking the surface.
  10. Cord.
  11. And of course the basic materials such as primer, glue, grout and tiles.

This list can be completed, of course, if possible, you can additionally use laser levels, styling devices and other innovative helpers of our time. But we are considering styling in a budget option that everyone can afford.

Foundation preparation

After the tool has been prepared, it is time to start cleaning the base on which the tiles will be laid in the kitchen apron.

As part of the preparation, the following processes are mandatory:

  1. High-quality dismantling of the old coating and its cleaning. In the case when the tiles were previously laid, a puncher will be needed. For other finishes, a spatula or special solutions may be needed. In total, cleaning is carried out down to the plaster (in its absence, to the base of the wall).
  2. Further, if plaster is present, it must be checked for adherence. If there are peeling elements, they must be removed, after which all irregularities should be covered.
  3. For the transition of tiles to other walls, the main factor is the creation of a perfectly even corner.
  4. Also, it is recommended to make notches in the wall for better adhesion of the adhesive mixture.
  5. Next, the surface is primed, at least 2-3 layers.

Also, it is worth mentioning that if there is fungus, mold or other lesions on the wall, it should definitely be treated with an anti-corrosion compound.

Self-styling apron

And finally we come to the work itself. Next, we will consider the technology of laying tiles on the wall, which will help you cope with the work yourself.

Let's consider step by step how to put tiles on an apron.

Step 1. Markup

Initially, an independent surface marking is carried out. Depending on the dimensions of the additional fittings, the size of the apron, its width and height are determined. For the most part, the distance from the floor to the bottom edge is 70-80 centimeters, while its height reaches 55-65 cm.

During the marking, it is important to decide on which side the laying will begin. From the center to the edges, or from one of the edges. It is important to understand here that when starting from the center, if the dimensions of the room do not fit perfectly to the size of the tiles, then trimmed pieces will need to be arranged around the edges. At the same time, if you start from the edge, then there will be only one cut off, and it can be masked.

Further along the level at the required height, a wooden beam is mounted. It will support the first row of tiles. In some cases, metal profiles or plasterboard sheets act as such a bar.

And the second markup becomes vertical, for which a plumb line is fixed at the top of the wall, which goes down to the bottom. This creates a perfectly vertical plane.

Step 2. Preparation of the solution

After the markup has been completed, you can proceed to the next step. It is the preparation of the mixture for styling. It is also necessary to pay special attention here, since if the composition is improperly prepared, the coating will quickly deform and completely collapse.

Usually, the instructions for cooking are on the packaging with the product. It is worth mixing for no more than 50-50 minutes of work, since then the glue begins to dry out and will no longer work, since its operational properties will be lost.

Also, pay attention to the working time of the glue, which should be indicated on the package. This figure means how long it can be used after mixing.

A frequent question is which adhesive for tiles in the kitchen to choose. And here it can be noted that there is not much difference, except that high temperatures will affect the tiles, and a special composition may be needed. But this only happens when laying is carried out on a stone oven.

Step 3. Installation of the apron

And now you can directly start laying work. In order to properly lay the tiles in the kitchen backsplash, you must use the correct laying order.

For now, let's pay attention to the size of the selected tile, and note that the larger the material, the easier it is to work with, and besides, it requires less maintenance. At the same time, the smaller the tiles, the more seams will have to be provided. This will lead to more time wasted and will also make editing more difficult.

The work itself is carried out in the following sequence:

  1. First of all, an adhesive mixture is applied to the wall (distributed over an area that will be processed in the next 20-30 minutes). After that, it is evenly leveled over the substrate using a notched trowel. Thus, on the wall you will see an even layer of glue mixture that has grooves on it.

  2. In the next step, also, the glue is applied to the tile, with the direction of the grooves strictly perpendicular to their direction on the wall.
  3. Next, the tile is pressed against the base and, with the help of a mallet or hammer, sits on the glue, pressing against the wall as much as possible. When starting work from the edge, an aluminum corner is immediately installed.
  4. Now you need to check the horizontal position of the tile, which is done using a building level and is equal to the plumb line.

  5. If something was not done correctly during installation, the tiles can be removed and their position corrected by adding glue or removing excess glue.
  6. After laying the first tile, gluing the next ones continues using the same technology, equal to the first. At the same time, special crosses are used to create uniform seams.
  7. The next row is to be installed after the first dries, preferably for this, give it a day. Since this row is the most responsible, it is better not to rush time.

Step 4. Pruning and styling

The next step is to trim the tiles, and then lay the missing pieces. For the correct execution of the cut, the necessary values are measured with a ruler, and a line along which the cutting will be performed is marked on the back of the tile with a pencil.

Thus, you can cut a fragment of any size, as well as provide the tile with additional recesses for communication systems.

Cutting from the back becomes important because cutting the face can cause tiles to split in the wrong place. The same applies to the holes.

Also, as the tiles dry, it is necessary to check the coating for the absence of voids, which are expressed by a dull sound when tapped. If there are any, the tiles in these places must be removed and glued again.

Step 5. Grout

And the last stage, when all the installation errors are eliminated, you can start grouting with a clear conscience.

It is important to wash the entire surface of the tile from dust and dirt, which could settle during cutting, even before starting processing.

The grout itself is rubbed into the seam with a rubber spatula, after which, after an hour, it is leveled and wiped with a damp cloth.

It is important not to forget about the selection of grout, its shade should be in harmony with the general thematic load of the room. More details about the choice can be found in a separate article on grouting.

Conclusion

And this is where all the work is completed, after another day you can start active operation of the coating. As you can see, the job is not that hard. It is enough just to delve into the process a little, and everything will go like clockwork. And finally, we suggest watching a few videos on how the tiles are laid on the apron.
