Despite all the variety of finishing materials offered by modern manufacturers, ceiling tiles are still among the leaders in sales, which is largely due to their economic availability. Repair using it can be done independently if you know certain secrets. One quick and inexpensive way to tidy up your ceiling is to use foam or polyurethane tiles. Read how to glue tiles on the ceiling here.
Work procedure
To cover the ceiling with tiles you will need:
- ceiling tiles;
- deep penetration primer;
- glue or sealant.
Pattern location options

With proper preparation of the substrate, the ceiling tiles will hold well.
- Before gluing the ceiling tiles, it is necessary to carry out certain preparatory work. The surface for finishing must be flat and smooth. If the builders allowed a significant difference between the slabs, then an additional frame will have to be created for the tile from pieces of polystyrene, otherwise it will look smooth and it simply will not stay on the ceiling. Ideally, if there is no whitewash on the ceiling, as this greatly simplifies the work. In the case where there is a thin layer, you can try to get by with a deep penetration primer. To do this, spread it evenly over the entire surface of the ceiling and wait until it dries.
- In the event that there are several old layers of whitewash on the ceiling, it will have to be washed off or cleaned off, otherwise the tile will not stick even to the strongest glue. In order to rid the ceiling of the old whitewash, it must be well moistened with water. To do this, you can use a roller or spray gun with a spray bottle. When the surface is damp, the whitewash can be easily removed with a wide trowel. The cleaned surface must also be primed, after which you can start working.
- The instructions that came with the foam ceiling tile say that you need to glue it from the center of the room by drawing two perpendicular lines on the ceiling and using the center of their intersection as a place to fix the first tile. This method allows you to distribute the tiles most evenly over the entire area of the ceiling, but it is also the most costly, since a lot of waste remains from the tiles.
- A simpler distribution of tiles is based on a single line drawn in the center of the room from the window to the opposite wall. To prevent the tile from moving away from the drawn line, you can create an additional stiffener by gluing the first row of tiles close to the batten or bar held along the drawn line.
- When the preliminary work is done, take the first tile and apply glue to it in the corners and in the center. After that, press it firmly against the ceiling on one side of the drawn line and hold it in the places of contact of the glue for a few seconds. The better the glue, the faster the tile will fix. Follow the procedure for the second tile. When working, pay attention to the direction of gluing the tile coincides with the picture and the arrow on its reverse side.
- Stick the next tiles on either side of the first two guides until you finish the first row. The two outermost tiles will have to be cut to fit the room using a clerical knife.
- Start the next row again from the center line. In the area where the chandelier is attached to the tiles, you will have to make a small cutout in order to skip the fastening itself. Continue to work until the end of the room, finishing the ceiling with tiles is completed by attaching plastic baseboards around the perimeter of the room. In principle, it is not difficult to glue the tiles on the ceiling, but you need to get used to it and everything will go like clockwork.
