How to bend drywall for a video arch.

Four ways to bend a drywall sheet

Many people who are just starting to work with a material such as drywall are often faced with the question - how do you bend this material? Many people think that it is difficult to do this, but nevertheless the matter is quite different, and it is easier to do it than it seems at first glance. But before proceeding with the methods of bending the wall and ceiling plasterboard sheet, you should introduce one more type of this material, which is intended specifically for this case. Installation of a suspended ceiling made of plasterboard of various shapes will be easier if you know the methods below and the video example below.

A special type of drywall, which is designed for bending and giving the necessary shapes - arched drywall GKLA. The thickness of such a sheet is 6.5 millimeters. This type of this material, due to its elastic forms, bends without much effort and makes it possible to create various arches, semi-arches, various curvilinear figures, as well as dome-shaped and wavy figures. Of course, arched drywall also has its own maximum bend radius, but it is still much more significant than the bend radius of ceiling or wall drywall. And due to the fact that the frame for the arched drywall is assembled from special, for this case, profiles that have cutouts on the side walls, this material can be smoothly bent.

But if a person does not have an arched GKLA at hand, there are some tips for this that can help cope with this task, even using other types of drywall sheet, and a video lesson will help to visually observe the process.

The first way to bend drywall:

The most effective and common way is. That you just need to moisten a sheet of drywall on one side with ordinary water. The thing is that gypsum itself is a very soft and porous material, due to which it very quickly and well absorbs moisture and becomes even softer, but when it dries it hardens and retains a new one. Acquired form. To do this, take a brush or roller and soak a drywall sheet several times with room temperature water. Now it is worth waiting for about five, or preferably fifteen minutes for it to get completely wet and soft. Then you can start bending the material as you like. But you should know that this method is perfect only if the bending radius is large, since with a small radius, the material can simply break or crack.

But in order to make a bend with a small radius, it is worth resorting to other methods of working with drywall, because ordinary water simply will not help here.

The second way to bend drywall for an arch:

The easiest option in the case of small radius bending is to use a special needle roller. It is necessary to walk with such a roller on both sides of the sheet, thereby making holes in the cardboard and a small layer of gypsum. This method allows you to make the gypsum board lattice, making it much easier to bend the sheet. But before you start bending it, you should moisten it with water to make it even softer. The water should be at room temperature.

The third way to bend drywall:

If it happened that you did not have a needle roller at hand, or you could not find it, then you can use a sharp knife. To do this, you need to make small cuts by cutting through the cardboard, but only on one side of the drywall sheet. The incisions should be made every one to five centimeters, perpendicular to the bend. You need to know that the smaller the bending radius, the more often you need to make cuts. If the structure is concave, then the cuts must be made from the inside of the sheet, and if the material must be bent outward, then the cuts are already made from the front side. In this case, it is not necessary to moisten drywall before bending. But this method is good in that the bend radius can be smaller than using a needle roller.

The fourth way to bend drywall for an arch:

If it happens that you need to bend a sheet of drywall to a very small radius, then you should resort to another method, since all the previous ones here may not work. For this you need a router bit. If it is not there, then you can get by with a knife. But it is worth warning right away - it will take a very long time and not as smoothly as we would like. The cutter must be set to a depth so that it selects almost all of the gypsum, leaving about one or three millimeters. The strips in the gypsum plasterboard are selected with a cutter on the principle - the smaller the bending radius, the more often it is necessary to sample the gypsum.

In principle, these are all four main tips on how to properly bend drywall and the video example below. But still, in the end, I would like to give one more, no less important advice - if your structure, which needs to be bent, is on the ceiling or high on the wall, then you should still give your preference to the arched GKLA. This material is also perfect for walls and partitions. You can use some options:

1. The first layer on the partition or wall, you can make from ordinary ceiling or wall drywall, using the methods mentioned earlier, but finish the last layer with an arched GKLA. Here you get a very rigid structure with a nice and smooth bend.

2. The partition or wall can be sewn up with two or four layers of arched drywall. This method is the most reliable, even and accurate, but more difficult and expensive.
