As a theater begins with a coat rack, so any house or apartment begins with a hallway. Its style and interior should not only make a good impression, but also be in harmony with the rest of the premises. In small rooms, every detail of the interior matters, including the ceiling. The ceilings can be decorated in a classic white design, or contain several levels with different types of lighting. The development of the style and installation of the ceiling using plasterboard in the hallway can be entrusted to specialists or to cope with this work yourself.

What can be used to make the ceiling in the hallway?

The modern construction industry offers many solutions and environmentally friendly materials for interior decoration of a house or apartment. In the not too distant past, the ceiling could only be whitewashed, painted or wallpaper pasted over. Now these traditional and inexpensive methods have been supplemented with suspended and suspended ceilings with lighting, ceiling tiles made of modern materials, and decorative elements. There are design options with plastic panels, stained glass, mirrors and metallized plates.

Ceilings for the hallway made of plasterboard are especially in demand. They are practical, reliable, durable and will make it possible to bring any designer's ideas to life with minimal effort and expense. A plasterboard ceiling in the hallway will cost more than painting or wallpapering, but it has many advantages over them. This suspended structure will help hide the unevenness of the ceiling in the hallway, remove electrical wiring and other communications from view. There is no need to do anything with the old ceiling; it is completely covered by a suspended structure. This saves you repair costs. In addition, plasterboard ceilings are easy to install independently in the hallway and throughout the apartment.

It must be remembered that repairs in the hallway are best done last. Firstly, all the garbage after the renovation of the apartment will already be removed. Secondly, the design of the hallway can be "linked" with the design of the rest of the premises.

Plasterboard ceiling in the hallway as a work of art

The ceiling in the hallway is often small, but it can also look like a plus. Correctly selected ceiling decoration will visually expand the boundaries of the hallway, make it lighter and more original. A single-level ceiling in the hallway made of plasterboard with spotlights scattered across the area will look spectacular in combination with dark furniture or a mirrored wardrobe.

And if the ceiling height allows you to make a two-level structure, then your hallway will look very stylish and beautiful. For narrow corridors, ceilings with clear straight lines are suitable. A square or rectangle, painted in a contrasting color with respect to the base, will visually expand the boundaries of the ceiling and the entire hallway. And the lighting between the levels will add aesthetics and mystery.

Finishing the ceiling is:

  • matte;
  • mirror;
  • painted;
  • smooth;
  • wavy.

The design of the ceiling in the hallway must be done in the spirit of the style of the main premises. It is best to draw up a sketch of the future ceiling, draw a drawing on its basis, measure and put down dimensions.

Beautiful ideas for plasterboard ceilings in the photo

Unlike stretch ceilings, a plasterboard suspended ceiling is easy to do with your own hands. Drywall has a number of tangible advantages over other materials:

  • individual design;
  • environmental friendliness;
  • reduction in energy consumption;
  • increased sound insulation;
  • good breathability;
  • moisture resistance;
  • the ability to install various types of built-in lamps and hidden lighting.

In addition, plasterboard strips can be given a wavy surface, which will allow you to apply various design solutions. Lightweight and resistant to external influences, this material is very convenient for finishing ceilings. It is not difficult to make a single-level ceiling in the hallway from drywall if you have a minimum of knowledge about technology, a partner and the necessary tool. It is better to entrust a multi-level ceiling to specialists.

Required materials and tools

The suspended ceiling consists of a frame (lathing) and sheathing. For the frame, take steel galvanized profiles or a wooden beam is allowed. For a flat ceiling in the hallway, both options are suitable. But there are a few things to consider. The timber for the lathing should be chamber drying with a relative humidity of not more than 15%. Before installation, it is impregnated with a special fire protection and allowed to dry. But even if all the norms for wood are observed, it is possible that over time the timber will lead, and cracks will appear on the ceiling. Therefore, most professionals prefer steel profiles.

In order to make the ceiling in the hallway from drywall with your own hands, you need to purchase the materials and tools necessary for work. Drywall sheets are of several types. For the hallway, a standard sheet (GKL) with a thickness of 9.5 mm is quite suitable. You will also need 2 types of profiles - guides (PN) measuring 28x27 millimeters and ceiling (PP) - 60x27 millimeters. The guide profile is fixed to the wall with 6 mm dowel-nails. To improve sound insulation, it is necessary to purchase a sealing tape with an adhesive base. To fasten the main shelf profile, use a direct suspension, anchor wedges, a single-level connector (crab), PSh screws to connect the entire structure into a monolithic frame. If the length of the hallway is more than three meters, you will need metal profile extensions. For sheathing the GKL frame, black self-tapping screws for metal 25-35 mm with a fine pitch, gypsum putty for gypsum plasterboard joints, reinforcing tape (serpyanka), acrylic primer are required.

It is equally important to have a complete set of tools necessary for work:

  • hydro level or laser level;
  • bubble construction level (1-1.5 m);
  • painting cord (stripping);
  • aluminum rule, 2-2.5 m long;
  • a hammer;
  • knife for cutting gypsum board (stationery with replaceable blades is suitable);
  • tape measure 5 m;
  • scissors for metal or a grinder with a circle for metal;
  • punch or drill with punch function;
  • screwdriver;
  • spatulas for finishing.

After everything you need is purchased, you can start transforming the hallway ceiling.

Correctly mount the ceiling frame for drywall

In order for the ceiling in the corridor to be smooth, beautiful, meet your expectations and serve for many years, it is necessary to carefully mark and correctly install the ceiling frame under the drywall. First, guide profiles are marked and installed. Since they are located around the perimeter of the room, their total length should slightly exceed the length of the perimeter. Divide the resulting value by 3 and get the number of guides (profile length 3 meters). The minimum indentation from the old ceiling should be 5-6 cm. If the future ceiling is equipped with spotlights, this indentation increases by another 5-6 cm.

We put the first mark on the wall with a marker or pencil. We transfer this height to the other walls of the corridor with a laser or hydro level. Then, using a paint cord, we connect these points into a solid line. To do this, press the cord to two marks on the wall, pull it in the middle towards ourselves parallel to the ceiling, and then release it. The cord hits the wall and leaves a clear, straight line. This is the border along which the guide profile is installed; holes are pre-drilled in it for dowel-nails with a distance of 40-50 cm from each other. On the back side, a sealing tape is glued to the profile.

It remains to attach it to the line and mark the holes for mounting on the wall. Holes in the wall are drilled with a hammer drill equipped with a concrete drill. The profile is fixed with dowel-nails. Now you can start more serious work.

Ceiling profiles are conventionally divided into longitudinal (long) and transverse (cut into pieces of a certain length). For a more accurate positioning of the profiles, the ceiling is marked into rectangles 60x50 cm.

How best to arrange the longitudinal profiles depends on the size of the hallway. If the width of the room is 3 m or a little less, it makes sense to arrange them in width, not length, to save material.

Longitudinal profiles are fixed to the ceiling using straight hangers. They are located along the markings at a distance of 45-50 cm from each other. The hanger is applied to the ceiling, while the marking line must pass through its center. Places for fastening are marked, after which holes are drilled. The hanger is attached to the ceiling with wedge anchors.

When installing longitudinal profiles, one end is inserted into the guide profile. So that the level of the ceiling is the same everywhere, the installation of the longitudinal strips is carefully controlled. For this, an aluminum rule can be used by pressing its ends against the lower edges of the guide profiles. In this case, the longitudinal profile rests on the rule and is attached along the entire length to the suspensions with PSh screws. Often, instead of a rule, stretched threads are used to level the horizon. Another option is to use a laser level.

The ends of straight suspensions sticking out below the level of the profile are bent up or cut with metal scissors. Crabs are inserted from above into the profile at the intersection of transverse lines. A transverse profile will be attached to them.

This finishing element of the frame for ceiling plasterboard is cut into pieces using metal scissors or a grinder. Its length is 1 cm less than the distance between two adjacent longitudinal profiles. These pieces are inserted into crabs and secured with screws. Additionally, the straight connector is fixed with self-tapping screws to the longitudinal profile. Ceiling frame for drywall for the hallway is ready. It is imperative to check the strength of the joints, trying to loosen the frame. If it moves, it doesn't hurt to re-tighten all the screws or add a few dozen new ones. The frame must be solid. Detailed secrets of working with the profile

Sheathing the ceiling frame with plasterboard

Before proceeding with the installation of drywall, you should install the electrical wiring. All wires are placed in special corrugated pipes. The wires should not lie on the metal frame.

GKL sheets are attached to the frame with screws with a fine pitch. The distance between the screws is 15-20 cm, and to the edge of the sheet - at least 2 cm. The screw heads are slightly recessed into the sheet. It is necessary to ensure that all joints of the sheets fall in the middle of the profiles. If the sheet covers the entire profile, the excess part of the sheet must be cut off. Drywall is not attached closely, but with a gap of 3-4 mm. After the entire ceiling is sewn up, and the sheets and gaps between them are impregnated with a special acrylic primer.

Then the seams are rubbed with a quick-drying plaster mix using a narrow spatula. Reinforcing tape is sunk into the wet putty. All recesses from self-tapping screws in the middle of the sheets are also sealed. When everything dries up, they begin to finish the plasterboard ceiling in the hallway. A finishing putty is applied, irregularities and roughness are removed with special nets. At the end, holes are cut for the lamps or decorate with an LED strip.
