When planning a renovation in an apartment, each tenant wants to do something beautiful, designer, individual. A soaring plasterboard ceiling with lighting creates an imitation of an airy ceiling. Backlighting visually expands the room and makes it brighter and more spacious. Drywall is used in many renovation work. The surface is leveled with this material, curved ceilings, unusually beautiful partitions and arches are created.

Ideas for creating interesting air ceilings
Plasterboard ceilings are present in almost every room. The flat surface is a big advantage. The soaring ceiling has its own installation difficulties. But, if you have the necessary tools, as well as following a clear work plan, the process will take place without difficulties and complications.

The soaring ceiling can consist of a single quadrangle illuminated by an ice tape, as well as of some geometric shapes that, with the help of illumination, "soar" under the ceiling.

The advantages of a floating plasterboard ceiling:
- The appearance of the ceiling is transformed into an extraordinary one, draws attention to itself, makes the entire interior of the room modern and beautiful.
- With the help of a floating ceiling, corners are leveled, communications are hidden.
- With the help of illumination of the floating ceiling, the room visually increases or decreases.
- The "hover" effect allows you to realize your fantasies by creating a beautiful floating plasterboard ceiling.
The creation of a floating ceiling is possible in a room with a small footage, as well as a small height of the walls.
Beautiful floating ceiling design
To create a ceiling structure with a "floating" effect, there are different ceiling options:
-
Single-level floating plasterboard ceiling with lighting. It is the simplest design, which is assembled by hand, while the process itself is simple.
Illuminated plasterboard ceiling -
A two-level ceiling with a "floating" effect. Here, the first level is the base for creating the second level. The second level is the figures created on the ceiling using metal profiles and sheathed with plasterboard. Various illumination gives the effect of increasing, volume, beauty.
Figured elements on a two-level ceiling with LED strip -
Multilevel soaring ceiling. It has 3 or more levels that have both geometric shapes and various curly elements.
floating plasterboard elements on the ceiling with lighting
A two-level and multi-level soaring ceiling has a more complex system in the installation of a frame base. But, adhering to the drawing, the work plan, it is doable with your own hands.
Important. Multi-level structures are mounted only in rooms with a height of 3 meters and above, because these are bulky structures. In a room with a low ceiling, such a structure will look stuck and ugly.
Materials
- Ceiling plasterboard 9.5 mm.
- Profiles PNP (UD), PP (CD).
- Direct suspensions.
- Dowel-nails 6/40, 6/60.
- Wedge anchor 6x40 or 6x60.
- Self-tapping screws for fixing profiles 9-11 mm in length.
- Self-tapping screws for fastening drywall to a metal frame 3.5x25 mm.
- Electric wires for lighting.
- Antiseptic primer.
- Primer.
- Putty mixture for reinforcing joints, tape.
- Finishing putty.

The amount of materials is calculated based on the dimensions taken. It is worth purchasing 10% more building material than the calculation.
Lighting devices for illuminating a floating ceiling
One of the main factors is the choice of lighting elements for the ceiling with a floating effect. Used: LED strip, fluorescent lamp.

Lighting devices are combined: an LED strip is built in along the edge, and a chandelier in the center.
Please note that the LED strip heats up, for this you need to take care of heat dissipation so that there is no overheating.
Soaring ceiling project
Before proceeding with the direct installation of the plasterboard structure, you should draw on paper how many tiers there will be in the ceiling, what they will be, and also indicated with backlight.

A sheet of paper depicts a diagram of a floating plasterboard ceiling. All removable dimensions are applied. Points are designated where there will be a transition from one tier to another. Necessarily dimensions are indicated in millimeters. Because it plays a big role when creating a wireframe.

On a separate sheet of paper, all installation locations of lighting fixtures are indicated, an electrical wiring diagram is drawn.
Preparatory work before installing the frame from profiles
After the drawn up project, the room should be freed from unnecessary things, furniture and other items that interfere with the process.
- Wallpaper or peeling paint is removed from the ceiling.
- In places of swollen plaster, everything should be removed, the holes should be putty. In some cases (cracks), a reinforced tape is used.
The preparatory process is an important step in the creation of a drywall structure. Since the surface will be closed from eyes, it is not known how the old plaster will behave (it will collapse on the soaring ceiling and make the structure heavier), the crack can go further and expand.
Marking on a rough ceiling for plasterboard floors
To carry out the markup you will need:
- laser level;
- building level;
- pencil or crayon. You can also use a chopping line, which is most convenient in a large room.
In the room where the ceiling is supposed to be floating, the lowest corner should be chosen. In this corner, 8 cm should be backed down from the ceiling. This point is transferred to opposite corners using a laser level, forming a flat plane. On the walls, along these points, one even single line is drawn - for the guides.

Further from this line you should step back down by 20 cm. This will be the second guide line indicating the height of the "floating structure".
On the ceiling, lines are drawn for the ceiling profile every 60 cm. Points for suspensions are set on these lines, with a step of 40 cm. Since the second level of the floating structure is assumed, the frame of the first tier should be made reinforced. Therefore, perpendicular to the main lines on the ceiling should be drawn in increments of 40 cm. Transverse.
And also on the ceiling, the points of future lamps should be marked so that they lie on one straight line and do not fall into the places of the suspensions.
Installation of a floating plasterboard ceiling with lighting
Before fixing the guide profiles to the wall according to the markings, glue a damper tape on the back of the profile, which serves as a barrier between the base and the metal.
- The guide profiles are fixed with dowel-nails along the lines on the walls. The fixing step is as follows: the beginning of the profile is attached, after which you should retreat 30-40 cm. Fix the second dowel-nail. And so on until the end of the profile. The end is also fixed with a dowel-nail. (fig. 1)
- On the ceiling, at the marked points, suspensions are installed using a wedge anchor. This fastener is fixed into the suspension lugs and mounted by hammering into the hole made.

An important point. If the suspensions are fixed with other fasteners, then the structure will be flimsy and sag over time.
- The next step is to fix the ceiling profile to the rails and hangers. Here you should follow a single plane. Each attached profile must be checked with a level.
- Cross sections are attached between the ceiling profiles. Fixation takes place with crabs and self-tapping screws.
-
The cellular frame of a soaring plasterboard ceiling from profiles is very carefully checked for strength (does not creak, does not stagger) and for evenness using a level and a rule.
Manufactured honeycomb frame for drywall - The frame base is completely sewn up with drywall. It is not necessary to reinforce the joints.

In the place of the lamps, the wire should be set at 20 cm for further fixing.
Installation of the II level of the ceiling from gypsum board
Further, you should know the exact dimensions of the "floating" drywall structure. On the ceiling, draw a marking 10 cm less than the figure itself. Basic lines are pointers for guides. Prepare the cut parts from the CD profile in advance. The length of this element is equal to the height of the "floating" figure. At the edges, "ears" are left from the side parts of the profile.

Lines for the ceiling profile are marked on the ceiling. Points for suspensions are set on these lines. These elements are attached with self-tapping screws to the plasterboard floor. For strength, the places where the profiles of the first level pass are determined by a magnet.
- The guide profile is fixed to the plasterboard ceiling with self-tapping screws.
-
Vertical cut-out parts from CD are attached to the guide profile using self-tapping screws "klopiki". Fixing step 40 cm.
step-by-step algorithm for creating 2 levels on a floating ceiling -
The ceiling profile is attached to vertical beams and hangers with small screws. The ceiling profile should protrude 15-20 cm beyond the guide. The CD profile is installed on the protruding parts of the beam.
A profile equal to the height of the structure is "put on" on the protruding ceiling profile. A niche for the ice tape is being formed -
After the created frame is sheathed with plasterboard.
Image - The protruding ceiling profiles from the inside are also sheathed with gypsum board.
The entire structure is covered with a primer. Plasterboard seams are reinforced, joint putty is applied. Masters recommend to choose putty mixtures of Knauf "Uniflot", "Fugen".
The entire surface of the ceiling of the I and II tiers is putty with finishing solution, rubbed with sandpaper.
Important. For the durability of the plasterboard construction, putty mixtures are selected from one manufacturer.

In the resulting niche, an LED strip is attached. It has a sticky layer of glue on the back, which is covered with a protective strip on top. In the ceiling recess, the protective material is removed from the tape and glued to the base. The connection is made to the protruding wire from the first tier.
The final step is painting the plasterboard floating ceiling. If the LED strip is colored, then the ceiling is painted 2 tones lighter than the color of the strip. This contrast will visually increase the size of the room, as well as make the plasterboard structure float in the air.
The second option for mounting a soaring plasterboard ceiling
Creating a frame base for a plasterboard ceiling, a niche is made from the profiles along the perimeter, departing from the wall by 15-20 cm. The height of the niche is not more than 15 cm. Guide profiles are attached to the ceiling along the entire perimeter. Cut vertical beams from CD profiles are fixed to these profiles. The length of the profile is equal to the height of the plasterboard structure (from 10 cm to 15 cm). The uprights are fixed every 40 cm with small screws. Ceiling profiles are attached along the markings to suspensions and uprights, protruding 10 cm beyond their boundaries.

The frame base is sheathed with plasterboard. The protruding profiles from the back are sheathed with cut pieces of drywall. The whole structure is subject to further reinforcement of joints, priming, coating with a finishing putty.

A soaring plasterboard ceiling is one option, suitable for a large living room and small kitchen. The design is easily created with your own hands without the involvement of masters. If a heavy chandelier is supposed to be the main light, the place on the metal frame is reinforced with an additional profile.

A soaring ceiling can visually enlarge the room, make it light and well-groomed. However, in large rooms, soaring ceilings of 2-3 levels of plasterboard are created, which have a dark color - blue for a feeling of coolness or brown for semi-darkness.
