Puttying of walls and ceilings is carried out in several stages: first, a base layer, a primer is applied, then a finishing layer is applied, sometimes double filling is done. The most essential requirements are imposed on the upper finishing layer: it must be smoother than the previous ones, and also resistant to external influences. In addition, the finishing putty should not consist of filler with substance fractions of more than 0.5 mm.
Why do you need a finishing putty of walls
Putties are used for leveling walls inside and outside the premises. Prepared on top

It is used as a base for other materials, for example, for wallpaper or for painting. The finish coat is a finishing coat, therefore it is important that it has a smooth surface.
The required properties are provided due to fine grinding of the constituent components of the material. The finishing putty made from filler of fine fractions up to 0.15 mm has the best qualities: when applied to the wall surface, it does not even need to be sanded. In terms of chemical composition, finishing putties practically do not differ from materials for basic and intermediate filling, the only difference between materials is the size of fractions.
The choice of putty
All types of fillers, depending on the material of manufacture, are divided into three groups:
- gypsum - with its use, the finishing putty of the walls is carried out in rooms with low humidity. Gypsum is not a waterproof material, in bathrooms, shower rooms, in the kitchen and in bathrooms, finishing based on it will quickly become unusable. Advantages of gypsum putty - no shrinkage and increased drying rate;
- cement - suitable for processing rooms with high levels of humidity. Has increased water resistance, has a slight shrinkage during hardening;
- acrylic;
- polymer - an option for rooms with normal humidity. It dries well and quickly, adheres firmly to the surface of the walls. The minimum thickness of one finishing layer is only 0.2 mm. Finishing putties prepared on the basis of polymers have only one drawback - a very high price.
The second important component of putties is lime. It is important that the size of its fractions corresponds to the size of the base fractions, otherwise the mixture will turn out to be of low quality.
For self-repair of premises, polymer putty is best suited. It has a high viscosity and is distinguished by good adhesion, due to which the finishing puttying of the walls can be performed on the first try, even without having the necessary experience.
Finishing putty application technology
The application of the finishing putty is carried out only over the starting or intermediate finish. The upper thin layer of material should be no more than 1-3 mm thick, and the thinner it is, the better. You can start working only a day after the previous layer of material has been applied.
Before applying the finishing putty, you need to prepare tools - large and small spatulas. The first one is suitable for finishing wide surfaces, and the second one is suitable for hard-to-reach places. The putty is applied with sweeping movements, the spatula is firmly pressed against the wall surface. The direction of movement of the spatula should not coincide with the direction that was chosen when creating the previous layer. For each area to be treated, the tool is carried out several times so that the layer of material is ideally smooth.
There is another application technique, which consists in the fact that first the putty is applied to the wall with short strokes in one layer. When it dries, a control coat is applied.
Stages and order of work
The first stage is preparatory. The dry putty mixture is diluted with water in order to obtain a solution of the required consistency. To do this work, they use a special container of a suitable size: first, cold tap water is poured into it, and then the powder is added in the proportion indicated on the package. The mixture is shaken using a mixer.
When rotating, the mixer blades will hit the sides of the container, and before applying the finishing putty to the wall, dirt particles may be found in the solution, which will get there as a result. To avoid this, it is recommended to thoroughly wash the dishes before preparing the filler. Also, do not use metal containers, as they can rust, and pieces of scale will appear in the mixture. The best option is clean plastic dishes.

If there is no time to prepare the material, you can purchase an already liquefied mixture at a hardware store. It costs about 20% more than dry powder. How to choose a ready-made putty in detail.
The next stage is directly applying the putty to the wall surface. To get the job done correctly, we recommend that you watch the instructional video. The videos show specific examples of what a finishing putty is and how to use it correctly.
The putty, which contains compounds with a fraction of more than 0.15 mm, needs grouting after drying. Usually, sandpaper of grain size 150 is used for this. As a result of processing, minor defects that spoil the texture and appearance of the surface will be eliminated. If a putty is chosen for repair, consisting of materials with a fraction of less than 0.15 mm, then additional finishing is most likely not required: such a material forms a homogeneous plastic mixture, which, when dried, practically does not form defects.
