When building private houses or overhauling an apartment with your own hands, the problem always arises of how to quickly and economically level the walls, the quality of painting or wallpapering vertical surfaces will depend on the ideal condition in the future. And if there are no plastering skills, then plasterboard wall cladding will be economically justified. At the same time, time is gained during alignment, an absolutely flat surface for painting is created, there is a place for conducting electrical wiring and heating systems inside the wall, design ideas for the implementation of niches, arches and partitions are implemented. If we also envisage the use of vapor barrier films, then we can safely additionally insulate the rooms in the space "eaten" by drywall. The last thing is that a similar alignment of walls with plasterboard with your own hands, steals several centimeters of living space, is a minor disadvantage of this technology. In this manual, as always, photo examples and video tutorials are presented to better understand the material. Recall that we have already told how a plasterboard ceiling is made with our own hands with video and photo instructions.
Today there are two main, but radically different technologies (methods) for leveling walls with plasterboard: first, the usual installation of sheets on a metal or wooden frame, fixed along the walls, and, second, gluing the sheets directly to the surface of the walls with the help of "glue" (special glue) … The second method, although economical and does not steal centimeters, is not suitable for too curved and damp walls, and if their height exceeds 3 meters. Therefore, below we will consider in detail the classic way of leveling the walls with plasterboard on a metal frame.
Before proceeding with the independent installation of drywall, it should be borne in mind that he does not like haste and negligence, and if you do not fulfill the elementary requirements for attaching sheets to the base, then over time such a wall will begin to “play”, and even if you may not see something like this under the wallpaper, then cobwebs of cracks will necessarily appear on the painted surface. Also, you should determine in advance what you will hang on the wall, i.e. provide for maximum loads on drywall, which technically cannot withstand the mass of a bookshelf or a huge painting. Therefore, guided by a previously drawn up design project, additional mortgages from the boards should be provided so that they take on the bulk of the things hung on the wall. Another point, in rooms where humidity is excessive (toilet, bath, kitchen),it is advisable to finish the walls with special moisture-resistant plasterboard, additionally treated with waterproofing material. Even though it is more expensive, it will allow you to glue tiles on it. Agree, a perfectly flat and moisture-resistant surface is very convenient for future tiling work.

So. First, we determine the required number of drywall sheets and metal profiles (and we definitely need UD and CD profiles, photo on the left) to align the walls of the room. We proceed from the fact that the size of the wall sheet is (height * width * thickness) 2500x1200x12.5 mm; The UD profile is used as a starting profile (length 3 or 4 m) and is attached to the floor and ceiling, and therefore its number is equal to twice the perimeter of the room; CD-profile is used for filling the base (length 3 or 4 m) and its consumption rate per one square meter of the wall is about two meters. You should also purchase: U-shaped brackets (based on 1 pc. Per 1 m 2, photo on the left), dowel-nails (2.2 pcs. Per 1 m 2), black self-tapping screws for metal (13 pcs. Per 1 m 2) and fleas (2.5 pcs. per 1 m 2). And from the tools you must have: a drill, a screwdriver (preferably a battery), a tape measure, a building level and a plumb line.
Let's get started. First, we check the unevenness of the walls with a plumb line, and with the help of a tape measure the length of the walls so that, taking into account all the breaks (usually they are not more than 10 cm), we can hide them with the help of a frame. That is, if one wall at our measurement turned out to be 3.00 m, and the opposite one - 3.05 m, then we start marking from the smaller wall - plus taking into account the guide. As a result, perfect right angles can be achieved. It is easier, of course, to check the room with diagonals, which should match in length, and as soon as you achieve a match, it will be possible to assert that the corners in the room are straight. These measurements will help to draw on the floor the lower rough outline of the future frame. We retreat from the wall by 5 cm and draw the main line parallel to the rough one. Then we lower the plumb line from the ceiling so that the tip of the load coincides with the line of the lower contour - we put a mark on the ceiling;and so on every corner. Let's connect the points on the ceiling with lines. As a result, we have achieved the ideal verticality of the future walls.
Now plasterboard wall cladding with your own hands proceeds to the next stage, along the lines marked along the perimeter on the floor and ceiling, using dowels, we securely fix the starting UD profile. Then, in the corners of the starting profiles, we insert and fix the CD-profile guides with the help of fleas, which, in turn, are fixed to the wall with a U-shaped bracket.
Advice: before fixing the guides, fix the brackets on the wall along a vertical line with dowels (every 50 cm), which will greatly facilitate fixing the CD-profile. Now a brief photo instruction, and a video under the article.

Now let's tell you more. To prevent the frame from turning out to be concave or curved, we pull at least two laces horizontally from the corners, which will allow us to control the vertical plane. Next, we fill the walls with a CD-profile with a step of 60 cm using the technology as described above. Usually, filling the frame does not cause difficulties, and the result is always pleasing. In a word, after a few hours, the frame (base) for fixing the drywall sheets is ready.
If you decide to fill the space between the main wall and the drywall with insulation, then mineral wool is perfect for this, its characteristics are excellent, (insulation from the inside is considered not entirely correct, due to the probable occurrence of condensation on the walls in winter, because the dew point falls on the surface of the drywall), then be sure to use a vapor-proof film, which is attached directly to the frame, and on top of it there are gypsum plasterboards. Also, see the types of soundproof materials to decide which one to choose.
Now you can safely attach drywall to the prepared base. To do this, we cut off the required length (if the ceilings are below 2.5 m) of the sheet and fix it with self-tapping screws for metal (their length is 25 mm) to each CD-profile in increments of no more than 30 cm. The heads of the screws must be immersed by one millimeter into the sheet. Plasterboard sheets are cut with an ordinary clerical knife, it is enough just to make an incision strictly along the line - and, by making an effort with your own hands, the sheet is easily broken.
Gradually fill the entire metal base with plasterboard: first, if possible, with solid sheets, so that the seams of the plasterboard boards are only on the metal profile, and then, with pieces cut to size. Advice: if the height of the wall is more than 2.5 m and you have to “finish” the required length in a piece, then the joining should be spaced at each subsequent installation of the sheet, which will reduce the likelihood of cracks after puttying. In the area of window and door openings, joining is not allowed: only solid pieces of sheets. Also, do not forget to fix the intermediate CD-profile horizontally at the joints.
Everything, as a result, an ideal horizontal surface should be obtained, which will only have to be putty. Well, then, you can either paint it or paste over it with wallpaper. Now watch a video lesson on how it is done by the hands of masters. To find out how much material you need, a free construction calculator for drywall will help you, you will find out what kind of tapered profile, screws and sheets you need.
