With the help of drywall sheets, you can build the most complex transitions on the ceiling, niches in the walls, arches, shelves, and more. Of considerable popularity is simply plasterboard wall cladding without using a frame. That allows you to get a perfectly flat surface even on very curved surfaces. But with a deviation within 4 cm, plasterboard wall cladding on a metal frame will be required.
Types of materials for building a frame for drywall
There are 3 types of materials for building a drywall frame:
- Metal profile. This type is most widespread due to the convenience of working with flexible metal, the lightness of the finished structure and the ease of installation.
- Wooden frame for drywall. It is used in the smallest cases due to the properties of the wood itself. First, it is susceptible to decay when moisture or constant high humidity enters it. Secondly, over time, it dries up, which leads to a change in its geometric parameters. And as a result, this will affect the geometry of the finished structure itself, cracks will go in the corners, putty will start to chip off and so on.
- Combined. It is more widespread, because the entire frame for drywall is made exclusively of metal profiles, and in places where the load on the wall (furniture or appliances) will be increased, a wooden block is inserted into the profile.
Profile types for building a frame for drywall
The choice of the type of profile for drywall is carried out based on the geometric parameters and the required strength of the future structure. It can be a decorative column or an imitation of a fireplace in the wall, then you can use a profile for drywall of smaller thickness and width. Thus, saving a certain amount of money and time. But if it is a niche, an arch, some kind of protrusions that are not only decoration of the interior of the room, but also its functional elements. Then the material should be selected thicker, the fasteners should be made thicker.

Today, there are several types of metal profiles on sale in terms of geometric parameters and type of production, from which you can install a frame for drywall on walls:
- Guide profile. It is a groove bent on a rolling mill in the shape of the letter P or U. Accordingly, it can be called PN or UW. It is used to fasten the bases of structures to walls and ceilings. Its main property is that it has a proportional width that allows you to freely insert the rack profile into it. After all, any installation of a profile for drywall on walls requires special strength and quality of the connection of elements. And the tight entry of UW into CW just provides that necessary quality.
- Rack profile, abbreviated as CW. Designed to carry out vertical elements of any design. It has high bending strength due to its special rolling technology. If you look at the cut, you can see its rounded edges and additional bends on its flat surface. This provides it with extra durability unlike the UW. The frame made of a drywall profile on the wall, due to the observance of technologies, must have high strength, stability, and with the correct arrangement of the stiffeners, it is not subject to vibrations.
Required materials for the manufacture of a frame for drywall
Before starting the installation of the frame for drywall on the wall, you must prepare all the required consumables and components:
- Profile of two types.
- Wooden bars according to the thickness of the guide or post profile. They should be invested in places with increased load; its use in the doorway will also be an excellent option. Because when doors are opened and closed, vibration is usually generated. A wooden beam, due to its elasticity, will compensate for any types of vibration. In many cases, the construction of a drywall frame does not require the use of wood. For example, a suspended ceiling, a niche in the wall with shelves, etc.
- Fastening components. These include various connectors (end and cruciform), brackets and hangers for mounting structures on the ceiling and loose wall bases.
- Hardware products. Do-it-yourself installation of a profile for drywall cannot do without the use of a wide variety of screws, self-tapping screws, ties, rivets, and dowels.
In this case, self-tapping screws must have at least three types:
- For metal. They are used when fastening plasterboard sheets to a profile.
- Wood. They are used for fastening the profile to a wooden wall, gypsum board to the frame.
- For metal with a flat head. These hardware are a means of fastening all metal structural elements together.

Required tools for installation
To install a structure from a drywall profile, you will need the following tools:
- Scissors for metal or grinder;
- pliers;
- drill or screwdriver;
- plumb line and construction cord;
- level;
- roulette;
- pencil and stuff.
Frame manufacturing technology
Before the installation of profiles for drywall begins, it is necessary to apply the markings.

So, according to a previously developed project, an initial line is applied on paper on the floor, ceiling or wall, depending on where the structure will be located. The initial line is a markup element from which all other calculations can be made. When applied to the floor, it will become the edge of the face of the drywall sheet. It needs to be projected onto the ceiling and walls. This can be done using a level and a plumb line. If the distances are large enough, then the construction cord will be the best assistant in this matter. Correctly applied markings allow you to most accurately make a frame from a profile for drywall.
After applying all the necessary markings with an indentation into the depth of the future structure, it is imperative to take into account the thickness of the sheet (usually a sheet with a thickness of 10 mm, thickened by 12.5 mm) can be started to install the frame under the drywall. A video tutorial will help you on how to mount the frame.

The first step is to measure the required piece of the guide PN or UW profile. This should be done as accurately as possible, but if the length is shifted by 1-2 cm, it will not greatly affect the geometry. It should be fastened with anchors. The method depends on the type of flooring, its structure, degree of strength. After attaching the profile to the floor, you can mount the drywall guides to the ceiling. Of course, after making sure of the correctness of their actions using a level or plumb line.
If the floor is concrete and solid, dowels can be used. If the base is loose and will be leveled with a screed in the future, it is better to use anchors or brackets of appropriate length and diameter. When constructing a frame on the ceiling or in order to level the wall, special suspensions are used, which can also be of several types.
Further, the installation of the frame for drywall continues with the installation of the side racks, respectively, the rack profile is used as them. Its anchorage also depends on the structure of the wall and its softness. Dowels and anchors are advisable to use in cases with concrete or brick walls. If they are made of wood, then the right solution would be to use self-tapping screws, ties or screws. The most effective interval for fastening the rack profile is 60 cm. And even then it depends on the future load applied to the structure. Accordingly, if it is heavy, then it is necessary to fasten it more often.
Installation of a profile for drywall can be carried out using different technologies, which depends on the complexity of the frame. After all, it can be a round arch, a protruding niche from the wall with an imitation of a fireplace, many beautiful in a chaotic arrangement of shelves-niches in, curved structures on the ceiling and walls with many bends and turns, complex asymmetric partitions and much more. There are a lot of options, as well as the wishes of people. But the principle must always be followed. The frame must be strong and motionless. Profile tricks and tips to help you speed up your work.
Manufacturing of semicircular frame elements

The drywall guide allows you to create a perfectly flat surface. But how do you make a curved bend, arc or arch? And the answer is quite simple. To bend the PN profile into an arc, its edges must be cut at the same distance. The smaller it is, the smoother the bend will be. In addition, this distance also depends on the degree of roundness and bend radius. Once the cuts have been made, the element must be secured before reattaching it. For this downtime, the side petals folded together are twisted with a self-tapping screw.
Drywall bends in the same way. On one side, a layer of cardboard is notched, and on the opposite side it smoothly bends around the frame.
Assembling the frame for drywall is a fairly simple task. In the process of work, the most important point was the application of the marking and its transfer from the floor to the ceiling. After all, the final result of all the work done depends on the degree of accuracy of this operation.
Profile mounting technologies

The installation of a profile for drywall can be carried out using two well-known technologies. The first one is American. In it, the rack profile is guided by a chute into the depth of the structure. The second, German, consists in the location of this gutter during the installation of the frame. And basically the type of orientation of the profiles depends on the prevailing situation and the features of the design itself.
If a frame is made on a wall for drywall, then the rack-mount profile is attached using suspensions. Then, after installing the trays in the guides and securing the side posts, while leveling them using a level and a plumb line, pull the cord. It will be the reference point and the touching boundary of the middle racks of the frame. Before that, of course, all the racks must already be installed in the guide rails and slightly pressed in with the suspension petals so that they do not fall. After the lace is pulled, each stand must be installed in place and secured with self-tapping screws on both sides.
