The key to the success of each repair is its implementation in accordance with the technologies and instructions. Today, there is a huge amount of a wide variety of building materials on sale, a huge proportion of which are finishing mixtures. But the fact is that when it is applied to the surface after a while, sometimes it is observed after 1 year, the finish in places begins to fall away. Sometimes even whole layers. And even if it was not very beautiful and of high quality, the foundation for it was not properly prepared. Here the primer comes to the fore. And the resulting tandem "primer and putty" should not easily bounce off the teeth of any master exactly in such a sequence of words, he should live by this phrase.

Even the ancient Greeks knew the technology of surface priming and its main role. Indeed, it is thanks to such mixtures that a loose and free-flowing base becomes durable. Particularly popular in ancient times was a primer in painting, it was previously applied to a canvas, a wall, thanks to which we can observe perennial works of art today.

First, primer or putty?

If you decide to start repairing, then you should not spare your money on finishing materials and a special role must be given to preparatory operations. For example, you have plans to plaster the wall with subsequent decorative finishing.

Before putting putty, primer, wallpaper glued, it is necessary to prepare the base. We remove the old coating and remove the crumbling components as much as possible. Then we take the plaster mixture and get down to business. But what!! Everything falls off either immediately or after a while. And then we realize that we have missed an important thing. Primer. Therefore, answering the question "What is the first primer or putty, plaster and so on?" it is safe to say, of course, a primer. And why?

The primer contains components that are deeply impregnated into the base, hold and glue it, thus obtaining a rough and sufficiently durable surface. But here, too, one should not rush, because if the primer is not allowed to dry, all work will go to waste.

In the case of concrete and brick walls, many may doubt the need for a primer for putty, but, of course, this is a misconception. But in the case of wooden coverings, the question "Are the walls first primed or putty?" doesn't make any sense. Because here and so it will be clear that nothing will hold on a smooth wooden surface without the use of any treatments.

Primer properties

The properties of primer mixes include:

  1. Increasing the adhesion of subsequent finishing layers (plaster, paint, putty, drywall).
  2. The primer is an excellent antiseptic agent that can prevent and destroy fungal formation, mold, even in the thickness of the wall.
  3. The primer ensures high quality and durability of the repair.

Having found out that the primer is an important component of any repair, the next question should be: "What primer is best for walls under putty?" It is impossible to answer unequivocally here, because there are at least 7 varieties of them on sale. And in order to find the necessary one, you should familiarize yourself with its composition, action and what materials it interacts with. Because each wall primer, before or after the putty, interacts with the substrate in a different way.

Varieties of primers

  1. One of the most common is an acrylic primer. It is an excellent product for the treatment of loose surfaces. The advantage of this primer is that it dries quickly (up to 5 hours), can be easily applied with a roller or brush, and at the same time adheres well to surfaces made of concrete and wood, gypsum board, or gas silicate blocks. But it does not interact well with metal, which affects its further corrosion. It has excellent adhesion properties, imparting the required strength and stability to a loose and porous surface. Priming the walls under the putty with this material will ensure the durability of your finishing repair, and your pocket will be full of money. Acrylic primer is suitable for use both outside and inside a residential building.
  2. The next no less popular type of primer is alkyd. It is used primarily for wood flooring. Provides a durable, rough to the touch contact layer, on which you can further put putty, plaster, gypsum. It can also be used for both exterior and interior work in a residential building. Drying and complete hardening of this material occurs at room temperature for 15 hours.
  3. Often a glyphtal primer is used for finishing work. It is advisable to use it only for dry rooms. The complete curing cycle is 24 hours at room temperature. The advantages of this primer include the ability to treat metal surfaces.
  4. The next type of synthetic primer is polyvinyl acetate. It has an exclusively special purpose for painting with polyvinyl acetate containing paints. Recommended for outdoor use. The polymerization process takes only 30 minutes.
  5. The next, no less toxic, but more effective is perchlorovinyl primer. It is prohibited to use it inside a dwelling due to the high concentration of chemically active substances. But for outdoor work, this is one of the best options, despite the fact that it dries up in just 1 hour. And you can use it on a metal base.
  6. The next type of highly toxic primer is polystyrene. It adheres well to all materials, making it an excellent option for outdoor use.
  7. The next type is phenolic. It adheres perfectly to wood and metal surfaces, which is why it is not recommended for use indoors. The full hardening cycle is 15 hours.

Why priming walls after putty?

If the primer before the finishing layer was simply necessary, then after finishing it is applied at the discretion of the master. Therefore, the question "Do I need to prime the walls after finishing putty?" quite relevant.

The primer will work equally under and above the finish. The finishing layer of putty is a fairly dense material that is practically not subject to sprinkling. And then at this stage further wall decoration should be taken into account.

If wallpaper is pasted over, then the surface can be primed with wallpaper glue itself, having previously allowed it to dry. There is savings on the primer, but more glue consumption is required. The second case when you can not use a primer is the subsequent painting of the wall with water-based compositions. The paint itself contains similar components to acrylic primer.

But the priming of the walls after the putty is required, even after the finish, if liquid wallpaper, plaster decorative finish and so on will be glued to it.

Having dealt with the types and purpose of primers, you can now create a complete combination of high-quality and durable repairs: primer, putty, wall primer and decorative finish.
