Due to its uniqueness and practicality, drywall has become the most popular means of arranging partitions and leveling walls. As a decorative finish, paint does not lose its popularity. And therefore, when it comes to plaster coating, you need to know how to prepare drywall for painting. And here there are a number of factors and processes that need to be analyzed.

Advantages and disadvantages of the material

First of all, it is worth figuring out whether such a material is suitable at all here, and whether it can be painted. To do this, consider the advantages and disadvantages of drywall:

  1. The material is quite light, besides, it is easy to install.
  2. When properly exposed to moisture, it can be bent.
  3. Easy to handle.
  4. Allows you to create hollow structures that are used for laying communications.
  5. The surface lends itself easily to any decorative finish.
  6. The material is non-flammable and completely environmentally friendly.

And now stupid about the shortcomings:

  1. Poorly tolerates exposure to water. In places where there is a risk of flooding, it is not recommended to use.
  2. Susceptible to the spread of mold, with constant exposure to moisture.
  3. Store in a dry place.
  4. Do not hang heavy objects.
  5. It is not recommended to cover with oil paints.

With this question sorted out. As you can see, drywall is universal and takes on any decorative coating, the only thing is that the use of oil paints is not recommended, therefore it would be better to take a water-based composition into service.

Coating requirements

Now it's worth saying about what the coating should be and what requirements are imposed on it when it comes to staining:

  1. The base must be perfectly flat, in order to avoid the appearance of irregularities, which will ruin the appearance.
  2. There should be no cracks or chips at all.
  3. To be done: primer, putty and sanding.

In some cases, fiberglass is also used, but this is mainly when arranging a high-quality coating for painting.

Required tool

To prepare drywall for painting you will need:

  1. Brushes.
  2. Roller.
  3. Putty.
  4. Acrylic primer.
  5. Spatulas.
  6. Serpyanka ribbon.
  7. 80-180 grit sandpaper.
  8. Ladder (stepladder).
  9. Lamp.
  10. Respirator.
  11. Sanding board.

Work stages

It's time to consider the workflow, in particular the stages of preparing drywall for painting. And there are only four of them, namely:

  1. First, apply acrylic primer to the drywall. It is applied with a brush or roller.
  2. Now putty the drywall joints and the sheets themselves. This is a necessary procedure.
  3. If necessary, sand the walls with sandpaper or a special sanding belt. Start the procedure with a coarser skin, gradually moving to a finer abrasive.
  4. Next, you need to re-treat the surface of the drywall with a primer. Moreover, the processing should be carried out in two layers.

And now it is necessary to disassemble each of the stages in as much detail as possible in order to fully understand the process.

Coating primer

The first stage in preparing drywall for painting is a primer. It further helps the paint to lay down as evenly as possible, at the same time significantly reduces its consumption.

In total, the primer is a composition that further improves the adhesion of the substrate (adhesion to the surface of other materials). It is best to use a clean primer without unnecessary additives and solvents. An acrylic primer becomes a good option; due to its properties, it significantly improves adhesion, in addition, protects the surface from moisture.

The process itself is carried out as follows:

  1. The drywall surface is thoroughly cleaned of debris and dust.
  2. Next, the application of the primer begins, which is done with a brush and a roller.
  3. Apply the primer evenly, do not apply too much liquid to the brush.
  4. It is advisable to apply the primer in several layers.
  5. For the next step, be sure to wait until the surface is completely dry.

Base putty

Further, the preparation of drywall for painting involves surface putty. This stage allows you to completely eliminate all cracks and grooves, as well as a seam filling.

The putty itself is divided into two types:

  1. Starting.
  2. Finish.

In this case, both options are used. Initially, the seams are sealed with Uniflot putty, after which the entire coating is finished.

In some cases, they require the use of a ready-made acrylic filler for surfaces that allow a perfectly flat surface.

It is convenient to perform the procedure with a good metal spatula. It is advisable to have spatulas of different sizes.

The filling process itself is carried out in several stages:

  1. First of all, it is necessary to close up the GVL seams. Apply the first layer of putty using the tape that fits under the compound at the seams.
  2. After it dries, apply the next layer (finishing).
  3. It is important to carefully perform all the work and do everything as carefully as possible, since the whole result of the work depends to a greater extent on the sealing of the seams.
  4. Before proceeding to the next stage of putty, check whether the screws protrude at the attachment points. To do this, you can run a spatula over the surface, it should slide as smoothly as possible.
  5. If necessary, tighten the screws.
  6. After the seams are completely dry, continue the puttying work, leveling with a solution all the irregularities and places where the sheets are attached with self-tapping screws. For this, a finishing putty is already used, which is applied in a layer of one millimeter (some special ready-made compounds provide for a smaller layer).

More details about the putty process can be found in a separate material.

Surface grinding

After the putty is done and the coating is dry, it's time to sand the surface. The walls need to be perfectly smooth, which is very important for painting.

When carrying out work, it is important to use a respirator, as there will be a lot of dust that is harmful to the lungs.

The surface grinding process itself is carried out as follows:

  1. We take a sanding bar, and begin to remove excess putty in a circular motion, which will help to get the most even coating.
  2. It is recommended to use a side light when working, so that all irregularities that need to be eliminated will be visible.
  3. Thus, performing spiral movements, we continue to work until the surface is flat.
  4. It is quite simple to check evenness, when the direction of the lamp is from the side, in the case when there are irregularities, they give a shadow from the light. Therefore, it is necessary to continue the work until all the shadows disappear.
  5. Do not get too carried away with grouting, it is important not to damage the coating of the drywall sheets.
  6. The end result should be a perfectly flat surface.

This completes the grinding, and you can proceed to the last stage of preparing the drywall for painting.

Finishing surface primer

After the filler and sanding work is completed, a layer of primer must be applied. The process itself is carried out in the same way as before starting work, it is worth considering only a few features:

  1. The surface of the paper layer should be well saturated with a primer, therefore the composition is applied in 2-3 layers.
  2. This stage must be carried out very carefully so that the paint lies well on the surface.
  3. Ceilings should be primed against light.
  4. Once the coating has completely dried, paint can be applied.

This completes the main preparation work, but nevertheless, we want to give you some tips on how to paint correctly without glare.

Helpful hints and tips

It is very important to pay attention to the following factors:

  1. Close to the paint areas, it is worth covering corners, baseboards and other areas that do not need to be painted with paper tape. This step will allow you to perform the work as accurately as possible.
  2. Do not use tape to protect the embossed surface, as paint can flow under it and spoil the appearance of the coating.
  3. Before starting work, it is necessary to completely remove all switches, sockets from those walls that are planned to be painted.
  4. Also cover the floor with plastic or newspaper to avoid smearing it while working.
  5. Cover those items that cannot be removed from the room (furniture, doors, windows) with foil or other protective material.
  6. Prepare all the tools in advance, preferably place them at hand, or in the center of the room.
  7. Do all the work in one go and dilute the paint in one large container, which is enough for the entire area. This is done to create the same shade, because if you do everything in stages, then there is a great risk that the shades on the wall will be different.
