Ceiling putty is used as an independent type of finishing and for further painting or whitewashing. We have already told you how do-it-yourself wall putty is done with a video example and a description of the process, take a look. First, you need to prepare the ceiling for work. To do this, you need to clean it of old paint or plaster. Now you should assess the condition of the ceiling. To do this, we apply a building level to it. The size of the gaps should be no more than 25 mm, if this condition is not met, you should think about how to sew up the ceiling with drywall. It is also recommended in such cases to use a reinforcing mesh, metal or synthetic materials. If the irregularities do not exceed 5 mm, you can do without preliminary plastering, and deal directly with putty. Individual irregularities can be removed with a punch.
Consider the option with plastering. We dilute the finished mixture according to the manufacturer's instructions. We take two spatulas - large and small. With a small trowel, apply the plaster evenly to the large one, and with a large one - directly to the ceiling. Remember - the smaller the angle between the trowel and the ceiling, the more plaster can be applied. After completing this stage, the plaster should dry completely. This usually does not take more than a day. Now you should wipe the irregularities with an abrasive mesh or sander. On the surface prepared in this way, only finishing puttying is carried out. If it was possible to do without preliminary plastering, then a special deep penetration soil should be applied to the ceiling surface. This will protect the ceiling from fungus and promote better material adhesion. The video examples below demonstrate the following actions well.

We proceed directly to the putty of the ceiling made of plasterboard or plastered with our own hands. When diluting a dry mixture, it must be borne in mind that if gypsum is included in its composition, then the drying time is reduced to 40 minutes. The mixture must be thoroughly mixed so that there are no lumps and stones. For the starting putty, this is not critical, but for the final putty it is strictly necessary. Two trowels are also used to apply it to the ceiling. Sagging should be avoided. When removing excess mixture, hold the spatula vertically. It is recommended to start working from the walls. After finishing, you also need to wait until it dries completely - about 6 - 8 hours.
Now we dilute the finishing putty. For rooms with high humidity, cement-based mixtures are used, for the rest - gypsum-based. It must be applied in a thin layer, literally only to hide the remaining irregularities. After drying, the ceiling is rubbed with an abrasive mesh. Be sure to wear goggles and a respirator for protection.
