Drywall is an excellent modern finishing material, with which you can not only get a perfectly flat surface, but also provide the opportunity to make beautiful arches, transitions and niches.

Drywall, as a building material, has a number of positive properties and qualities, which, in their own words, make it widely used.

Preliminary stages

Profile frame
Profile frame

Before deciding how to attach drywall to the wall, you need to determine its structure and geometric parameters:

  1. If the wall has ledges and niches that will not be used, then it is better to lay them with bricks.
  2. Cracks in the walls should be embroidered and covered with a reinforcing mixture. In general, it is necessary to prepare the surface.
  3. Further, before fixing the drywall to the wall without a profile or with a profile, it is necessary to carry out an antiseptic preparation of the base. This will prevent or eliminate mold and mildew.

Methods for attaching drywall to the wall

Having dealt with the base, consider the existing methods of attaching drywall to the wall.

Fastening drywall to the profile

This method is used where there are a large number of irregularities and deviations on the wall. They are compensated by guides, which can be:

  • wooden;
  • metal.

But fastening the profile to the wall may be required not only to compensate for irregularities. Under it you can:

  1. Free to conduct all kinds of communication.
  2. Make ventilation ducts.
  3. Install additional insulation.

Fastening drywall to a wall without a profile

This method is used where it is necessary to preserve the space of the room, and ultimately, the walls should be as even as possible.

Installation of drywall to the profile

To start attaching the profile for drywall, you must select the profile itself. It is selected based on the future load on the wall and the strength expected from it. If kitchen or other furniture will hang on it in the future, then a thicker profile should be used, and its fastening should be done more often.

Wooden block in a CD profile
Wooden block in a CD profile

In general, the profile is a rigid galvanized strip, which is obtained by bending on a press from galvanized sheet metal. Due to this, its necessary rigidity and strength is acquired. The profile used in the design of the lathing for the gypsum board can be of two types:

  1. CD is the main element that gives rigidity to the structure and the hanging furniture elements are attached to it. It is mounted in the form of a lath, fastened together at intersections. Plasterboard is attached to it.
  2. UD-profile is a U-shaped bar with narrower width without additional stiffening ribs. Used for securing the battens and for attaching drywall to the perimeter wall, ceiling and floor. A CD is inserted into it if necessary. Therefore, it must be sized according to the CD height.

To fix the drywall to the wall, you must have the appropriate set of tools with you:

  • puncher;
  • screwdriver;
  • if the wall is wooden, then you can fasten the structure with ties or anchors, and for this you still need a drill.

The fixing of the drywall profiles to the wall is carried out using dowels. They are also selected based on the load on the wall and its structure.

If the wall is made of ASG blocks, then:

  1. They must be long enough to penetrate deeply into the structure.
  2. Sometimes anchors are even better. This will allow the drywall wall not only to become rigid, but also not to deform over time under the influence of external forces.
  3. In order to properly fasten the profile for drywall, it is necessary to maintain a fastening interval of no more than 50 cm vertically.

Fastening drywall to the wall using a profile requires adherence to a certain technology:

  1. There must be both vertical and horizontal structural elements.
  2. Moreover, they are fastened together using additional elements or methods.

There are two types of CD profile connection:

  1. T-shaped. It is used in the places of transverse joints of plasterboard sheets.
  2. Cruciform connection with crabs. These profile mounts are a metal element with four sides and many additional branches - petals to bend around the CD-profile. The profile is connected to each other using self-tapping screws for metal or rivets, but to give greater rigidity it is better to use self-tapping screws.

Fastening a metal profile

The first step is to mark the wall for the future frame. This can be accomplished using two tools:

  • cord;
  • level.

To attach the drywall to the wall correctly, it is necessary to maintain the vertical position of these areas, and the horizontal ones should be strictly perpendicular to them. This requires:

  1. Using a level, mark the places of attachment of the end elements-UD, retreat a small distance from its middle and pull the cord.
  2. Further, vertical racks are mounted according to the marks and the lace. This profile for fixing drywall should be placed in the structure with a step of not more than 60 cm. The UD-profile is fixed to the walls, ceiling and floor with self-tapping screws or brackets with a step of not more than 40 cm.

It is important to remember that at this stage, if you plan to mount heavy furniture or equipment on a plasterboard wall, then a wooden block must be inserted into the CD-profile. And in it you can safely twist large screws and brackets.

Drywall fastening technology to the profile

Having dealt with the design, it is necessary to begin the installation of the sheets themselves.

At this stage it is necessary:

  1. Make markup and wiring of all communication
  2. Cut openings in drywall sheets for ventilation inlets, sockets and switches.
  3. Next, you need to decide how to attach the drywall to the profile.

But the task is not so difficult, because the fasteners are carried out using screws with conical heads and fine threads. This allows them to easily sink 2-3 mm into the structure of the sheet, without creating unevenness on the plane. Their size is chosen based on the thickness of the sheet, usually 4–3 cm is enough.

To properly fix the drywall to the wall, you must maintain a distance between the screws no more than 30 cm.

Also, self-tapping screws or screws can be used as fasteners for drywall. But first it is required:

  1. Drill holes with a smaller drill in the screw profile.
  2. The plasterboard mount must be selected based on the material of the supporting structure and sheet thickness.

To make the process much easier in the future, you need:

  1. All joints of drywall sheets should be carried out on a wide CD-profile.
  2. If the sheets are selected with a factory bevel, then the seams can be better sealed with a reinforcing mesh and putty.
  3. It is also necessary to remember that the sheets are fastened strictly in a vertical and horizontal position.

The method of mounting drywall to a wall without a profile

Fastening drywall with a frameless method
Fastening drywall with a frameless method

If it is necessary to save space as much as possible, then sheet fastening without a profile is used. For this, special glue and dowels can be used.

Before figuring out how to fix drywall to a wall without a profile, you must:

  1. Measure the wall.
  2. Find out where the greatest deviation is present.
  3. In that place, you will need to put the same drywall and more glue.
  4. Before applying the adhesive, both surfaces must be primed first.

It is important to remember that when gluing sheets from below, a distance of at least 5 mm must be backed off. This is necessary for the possibility of its thermal expansion due to changes in humidity. Also, in order to attach the drywall to the wall without a profile as efficiently as possible, it must be supported with some kind of stand while it dries.

Cutting drywall with your own hands, photo

Having figured out how drywall is attached to the wall, you can proceed directly to its installation. But in the process of work, every now and then you will have to cut pieces of various lengths and shapes from it. To do this, you can use the following tools:

Drywall cut
Drywall cut
  1. Electric jigsaw. Suitable for curved cuts as required.
  2. Assembly knife. Basic cutting tool.
  3. Hacksaw saw. It is used for cutting off large straight elements.

To cut a piece evenly, you must:

  1. Use a metal ruler.
  2. Pressing it tightly to the surface and pressing hard on the mounting knife, the top layer of cardboard is cut along with the gypsum composition.
  3. Further, the piece to be cut is gently bent in the opposite direction and the paper is cut with a knife from the second side.
  4. After cutting out the required piece, the drywall is attached to the wall without a profile or with it, as previously conceived.

Drywall chamfering

Many wall elements require perfectly flat corners and surfaces. It is often required that the corner pieces fit together perfectly. To do this, you must chamfer the sheet. This can be done using a mounting knife:

  1. It is necessary to note the distance from the edge of the sheet at 10 mm.
  2. Under a metal ruler or level, carefully cut the corner at an angle of 45 °.

Making a cutout in drywall

Drywall is a three-layer sheet material that can be easily processed with any tool for various purposes:

  1. In order to cut a round hole in it for sockets and switches, cutters and drill bits are used.
  2. A jigsaw is used to cut large curved holes, a hacksaw with a fine tooth for straight square holes. To do this, pre-make longitudinal with a hacksaw, then the remaining side is cut with a mounting knife and the sheet is broken. On the other side, a second layer of paper is cut.

Processing of gypsum plasterboard joints, internal and external corners

Often, in order to fix drywall to the profile with high quality in hard-to-reach places, it is necessary to adjust the corners and joints.

For these purposes, you can use a special plasterboard plane or a file for wood.

Processing joint joints on a plasterboard wall

The processing of joints of drywall sheets is carried out in the following sequence:

  1. Ceiling sheets for this have a special thinning to the edge.
  2. A reinforcing mesh is embedded in it, but first it is necessary to cover up the deep seams and holes from the screws with putty or plaster composition. It hardens most quickly, which allows you to do all the work in one go.
  3. The mesh is glued with the same compound, and then covered with a finishing layer of putty. The net is sold in standard widths of 80–100 mm or can be cut from a roll.
  4. The final step is to cover with putty. It is better to use a spatula 60–80 mm wide to cover seams and grooves.

Wall mounting of interior elements

Butterfly dowel
Butterfly dowel

How to attach interior items to drywall? It is necessary to use the so-called butterfly fasteners if it is necessary to fasten lightweight interior elements to drywall, for example:

  • lamp;
  • shelf;
  • hanger.

They are dowels with plastic clips, which when the screw is tightened open, like the wings of a butterfly, securely fixed in the sheet. Another drywall mount can also be used, acting on the same principle.
