Planning the renovation of a room where tiles will be chosen as the flooring always means choosing the method of laying the tiles on the floor. This finishing material differs not only in the composition of the product and in the variety of colors, but also has a different shape. With the correct decomposition of the material, the result can be a stylish ornament or pattern.
How to decide on how to install ceramic tiles?

Interior planning should take place even before the start of the renovation itself. When the main design of the room has already been thought out in your head, you should proceed to the choice of the material itself and one of the options for laying tiles on the floor. Important selection criteria are:
- The area of the room and its shape. The fact of visual expansion or contraction of space depends on these indicators. By choosing the right tile size, the option of laying the floor tiles, as well as the color scheme, you can achieve excellent results.
- The future arrangement of furniture or plumbing in the room. The future floor drawing also depends on where these objects will be located.
- Room lighting. It is also an important criterion when selecting options for laying tiles, because it is undesirable to have light reflections in the room or, conversely, too dark areas.
- The quality and type of floor surface. If the floor is not level, you will need to add a little height to fill the concrete screed, therefore, in order not to additionally lose space, you will need to choose one or another method of tiling.
The preparatory stage of work includes cleaning the floor surface from the old coating, as well as sealing all cracks, pits and bumps and achieving the most even surface.
It should also be taken into account that, depending on the option of finishing the floor with tiles, it is necessary to calculate the required material, while adding another 10% of additional material.
Do not forget about the tile joints, which will be filled with a joint.
Before drawing up a drawing and a color scheme for the future tile floor, it is worth figuring out what methods of laying floor tiles exist.

Traditional way of styling

It consists in the arrangement of the tile material joint to joint, that is, square to square. This is the most widely used method of laying tiles on the floor today - a photo of such a layout can be found in almost every catalog of companies engaged in tile laying services.
The finishing material in this version is laid in strictly straight lines and rows. This method is good for small rooms, if you resort to one trick: choose large format tiles in light colors. This will create the effect of visually enlarging the room.
This method is not a suitable option for laying rectangular tiles, due to the fact that it is difficult to correctly play the pattern. However, you can get out of the situation if you lay out a kind of frame from tiles of this shape of the same color, and fill the space inside with square tiles of a contrasting color. Also when using solid color tiles, you can experiment and insert brightly colored rectangular tiles in a chaotic manner.

Laying tiles at an angle

This option involves tiling the floor with tiles, deployed 45 degrees from the wall. This method of diagonally laying tiles on the floor has also gained popularity among consumers and craftsmen due to its simplicity, but at the same time, its zest. It is advisable to choose a tile for this installation method in a solid color without ornament and pattern. But if, nevertheless, there is a pattern on the material, then you will have to carefully observe it.
Although this option for laying tiles on the floor is common, it still has some disadvantages:
- Significant trimming of tiles, which entails additional consumption of material and time for its processing. Even using a special tool, more time will be spent than with the traditional masonry method;
- The method of laying tiles on the floor diagonally implies the presence of accuracy and patience during the work;
- After the completion of the work, a lot of finishing material will remain, which, in fact, cannot be used anywhere in the future.

Chess stacking method

As the name implies, the tile with this method is laid in contrast. This option for laying tiles of two colors implies their alternation. With a checkerboard pattern, you can achieve an elegant room design, especially when using black and white.
As with the traditional method, the tiles can also be laid diagonally in a staggered manner. This option allows you to add variety, for example, by adding rectangular tiles around the entire perimeter, and lay the main part of the tiled canvas at an angle.

Stacking tiles

When tiling the floor in this way, the effect of brickwork is created. When laying tiles with a brick, rectangular tile material is most often used. This gives the masonry the greatest resemblance to stone finishing.
This option implies the presence of some nuances: the tile must necessarily be monochromatic, while if you use several colors of the material, then you may get a visual feeling that the floor is tiled unevenly. This is due to the contrasting of the material, which is undesirable when using rectangular elements.
The diagonal option of laying rectangular tiles on the floor will be quite laborious, because some effort must be made to ensure that all the tiles lay down according to the intended pattern.

Herringbone tile installation

In this situation, the tiles are located on the floor, similar to the placement of wood panels in parquet masonry. This method is suitable for laying rectangular tiles on the floor - this form is most relevant when using herringbone masonry. Today, only two options for the arrangement of tiles are used with this method:
- The first tile is laid parallel to the walls, starting from the corner. This tiling option will direct the herringbone diagonally across your room;
- The first tile is placed at an angle from the wall - thus, the pattern will lie perpendicularly.
If you have chosen this method of laying tiles on the floor, and the room is too small, use rectangular tiles with a narrow shape - this will create a visual increase in the floor area. If you need to achieve the opposite effect, choose a wide rectangular tile.
You can also consider herringbone tile patterns. By adding a variety of colors or playing on contrasts, you can create a rainbow mood or lay out the desired ornament.

Laying tiles in a labyrinth

Another interesting option for laying tiles on the floor is its arrangement in the form of a maze. The tile material is used in two forms: rectangular and square. At the same time, picking up material in the store, you must immediately fold a drawing out of it. An important point: the size of a square tile should be half the size of a rectangular one.
With such laying, a weave pattern is created. Here you can use some options for laying tiles in two colors: for example, two contrasting shades or tile materials that are similar in tone. It is not excluded in this method the use of tiles with a pattern: this will add mystery to the ornament of the floor surface.

Applying a pattern when laying tiles

When designing a tile laying scheme, you can create your own ornamental image. There are a lot of options for laying tiles with a pattern: the arrangement of tiles of different shapes at an angle will help to make a carpet pattern, and by slightly cutting off the edges of the tiles at an angle, you can achieve an interesting ornament in the form of a honeycomb.

Whichever method of laying ceramic tiles is chosen, do not forget that the quality and material of the floor covering in the house creates its appearance, therefore, it is necessary to approach the choice of the installation option with responsibility, and then the results will exceed expectations.
