During repair work, sometimes the problem arises of how to remove dried tile adhesive or grout from a tile or other surface. If the tiles are just laid, then the easiest way to get rid of the dirt is by rinsing them off with warm water with the addition of detergent. But what to do if the cement glue has already dried out or you need to remove the old, long-hardened mortar? There are several techniques, including those from “folk craftsmen”, the use of which depends on the degree of hardness of the tile adhesive.
Removing incompletely dried glue
Once the tiles have been laid, traces of glue and grout, which have not yet fully hardened, can be removed in stages, first by dry cleaning and then rinsing the surface with warm water. For this:
- The contaminated area is treated with a special construction float. During cleaning, the tool must be held strictly vertical to the tile surface, making diagonal movements so as not to damage the filling in the joints. No effort should be made. The adhesive contains hard elements that can scratch the glazed coating.
- If the adhesive does not rub off well, it can be saturated with water to make it more pliable.
- When the glue is completely dry, rinse it off with warm water using a sponge.
Note! If after using this method, remove the adhesive from the tile, plaque remains, you can remove it by wiping the tile with a hard dry cloth, for example, an old towel or burlap.
Remove hardened glue
Removing completely dried, hardened glue is not an easy task. There are several ways for this, which, according to the method of action, can be conditionally divided into chemical and mechanical.
In the chemical method, special acid-containing agents are used for cleaning, for example, "Keranet" or "AtlasSzop". These substances are able to remove not only glue or grout residues, but also more severe dirt, as well as traces of scotch tape and rust.
The sequence of actions on how to remove tile adhesive using chemicals is as follows:
- clean the tiles from dust;
- apply the product to the contaminated area with a brush or sponge;
- after the time indicated in the instructions for the preparation, remove the softened glue with a spatula;
- rinse off the product with residual dirt with clean water.
Note! Best results can be obtained when using a solvent from the same manufacturer as the adhesive used. Therefore, in order to choose the best tool, you need to know the type and brand of glue.
The chemical method does not always give the desired result and is not applicable everywhere. For example, how to remove tile adhesive from the wall when the old tile is dismantled from it? In this case, the mechanical method is suitable, that is, forceful action with the use of various tools. Let's consider its use in various cases.
When you need to remove old glue from a wall or floor, you can do this with a hammer and chisel, or with a grinder with an abrasive disc.
In the first case, the technique for removing tile adhesive is as follows:
- attach the sharp edge of the chisel to the border of the glue with the wall;
- with frequent, but slight blows, gradually moving the chisel forward, chipping off pieces of mortar from the base,
- moisten the remaining glue with a concrete solvent, withstand the required time and remove with a stiff brush;
- rinse the wall with water.
Instead of a chisel, you can use a chisel.
The use of a grinder or drill is a less laborious way to remove tile adhesive than described above, but you need to be prepared that there will be a lot of dust during work. You will need a special abrasive disc or metal bit. The adhesive should be removed in small layers, occasionally spraying the surface with water from a spray bottle. The traces of the solution remaining on the base are cleaned with coarse sandpaper.
Carefully this method can ruin the tile surface.
If the cured adhesive needs to be removed from the tile, you can use a plastic or hard rubber trowel. To do this, it is placed on glue strictly at an angle of 90 degrees and the dried layer is gradually knocked down. It is not advisable to use a metal tool, as there is a risk of damaging the tile surface.
Cleaning of tile joints
Often mortar is stuffed into the seams between the tiles. You can clean it with a special knife for jointing, but a quicker way to remove tile adhesive is to use a drill with a round metal brush attachment. In this case, the tile is not scratched, and the grooves are cleaned to a depth sufficient for grouting.
The use of folk remedies
If there was no special solvent at hand, then to resolve the issue of how to remove tile adhesive from a tile, you can use the experience of "folk craftsmen" and use improvised means. Suitable for this purpose:
- vinegar;
- lemon acid;
- soda;
- chlorine;
- Steam Mop;
- Coca-Cola.
Removing glue with vinegar or citric acid:
- Apply vinegar or citric acid solution to the stained area. If traces of glue cover a wide area, you can use a spray bottle. The concentration of the solution varies with the thickness of the contamination.
- Wait until the reaction starts (the surface will bubble) and the glue softens.
- Clean the tiles with a spatula.
- Rinse with warm water.
Using regular baking soda is another effective and cheap trick to remove multiple adhesive traces from tiles. To use it, apply a small amount of baking soda on a generously moistened sponge and rub the stained areas. Then wash off the mixture with water.
Note! The sponge needs to absorb a lot of water to prevent the baking soda from scratching the tiles.
Chlorine's ability to cope with the most corrosive dirt will also help in cleaning tiles from adhesives. To treat the surface, dilute chlorine with water, stir and pour into a spray bottle. Spray the composition on the contaminated area, wait until the chlorine softens the glue and remove with a damp soft cloth or sponge.
One of the popular ways to remove tile adhesive from the floor is to use a steam generator. With this device, you can remove the glue even in the most inaccessible places. A powerful jet of steam from the device softens the solution, after which it is easily removed.
Old, dried glue from removed tiles can be loosened with an unconventional product such as Coca-Cola. To do this, the tile is placed in a container with a drink so that it is completely immersed in it. After a few hours, the top layer of glue will soften and can be removed. To completely clean the tile, you may need to repeat the operation several times.
Using the techniques described above, you can get an excellent result, saving time and energy. You just need to follow the methodology and take the necessary precautions.
