Installation of a wooden roof, as a rule, is carried out using milled boards with a maximum thickness of 2-2.5 cm. Preliminarily, shallow grooves intended for water drainage are made on their surface.
If it is necessary to replace only one board that has rotted as a result of a loose fit of the coating elements and penetration of moisture into the cracks, the damaged board should be carefully removed and a new one should be attached in its place, carefully following the masonry step.
Professional roofers are against repairing such damage with a patch cut from a board. The service life of such inserts is very short, and after a short period of time, repair work on the roof will have to be carried out again.
Rotten rafters must be replaced completely, while removing old and fixing new bars. It is important to ensure that the new bars exactly match the required size and fit tightly into the grooves of the notches at the ends of the rafter legs.
The roof, sagging due to rotted rafter bars, must be leveled before starting repair work with a jack. You can also use wedge racks for the same purpose. Then struts are brought under the rafters, connecting them with brackets on the rafter legs. The final step is to replace the damaged bar.
If it is not possible to replace the rafter bar completely, you can strengthen it with wooden pads, which are bolted to the damaged board.
In order to timely identify coating defects, periodically you need to check the condition of the wooden floors that make up the attic. This is done using a conventional ax, tapping the beams with the butt. A dull sound after the impact indicates the presence of damage to the roofing element and the need for urgent correction.
The most common defect in attic floors is the decay of the ends of the beams anchored in the walls. To prevent further spread of rot, you need to strengthen the damaged beam using a board or bar pre-treated with an antiseptic solution.
The section of such a lining should coincide with the section of the broken beam, and the length should be equal to two element lengths.
Usually the onlay is made of glued or solid coniferous wood, and the cranial bars are made of aspen and alder.
The main features of the installation of a wooden roof
The dimensions of the new skull blocks, which were cut from wooden blanks according to templates, should be identical to the old ones. They are attached to the beam with the help of nails having a length of 10 cm and a diameter of 0.4 cm. The nails are hammered in, placing them strictly in the middle of the bar. In the process of work, it is important to ensure that the nail will certainly enter the beam.
Various damage to the roof often provoke damage to shields and floor panels. In most cases, it is necessary to completely replace the coating to correct such a defect. The sequence of these works is as follows: first of all, the insulation layer, panels and shields are removed, then the decayed beams are removed, cleaning them of dust and dirt. At the final stage, the beams are examined, checking the horizontal position of the supports and the layout of the axes.

Then the old beams are replaced with new ones by treating them with an antiseptic solution (bitumen or resin) and wrapping their ends with roofing felt or tar paper. In the event that the wooden beams are poorly dried, you should not seal the grooves, fixing them in the right place. To avoid damage after the material has dried, it is recommended to leave them open.
In frame and panel buildings, beams are attached to the upper trim of the walls, in wooden log cabins - on the outer walls, while the bars seem to be cut between the upper crowns.
When building brick houses, beams are placed, be sure to strengthen them on the outer walls at a depth of 19-20 cm with an interval of 3 cm from the wall. Cement should be covered with joints. In this case, the ends of the beams should be cut off "naus" so that an air cushion forms between the wall and the beam, which facilitates better evaporation of moisture from the ends. When performing the work, first of all, the extreme beams are fixed, and after checking the correctness of their location, the rest are also put, always parallel to each other. Using a level, they check the horizontalness, and then fasten the laid beams with nails, after which they put floor panels on them, covering them with a layer of roofing tar paper or roofing felt and, last of all, with heat-insulating material.
When repairing damage to floor slabs, first assemble the frames and then attach the slabs to them with nails and glue. After that, the end of the panel should be treated with an antiseptic solution and the roofing felt or roofing felt in the wall at the place of its future fastening, attaching it with bitumen mastic. Then, placing them parallel to each other, the panels are fastened, connecting them together with nails driven through special inserts designed to mask the seams. The final stage of installing a wooden roof involves covering the panel with a layer of insulation, both new and old.
Boiler slag or coal slag can be used as insulation in chopped wooden houses. They are poured onto the overlap with a layer of 10-15 cm, and along the perimeter - with a layer having a thickness of 30-40 cm and a width of 1 m. Coal slag should be dried before use, keeping in air until the sulfur odor disappears completely. Boiler slag must be moistened periodically.
Often the wood roof is affected by the grinder beetle. Its invasion results in numerous small holes in the timber elements, significantly reducing the life of the roof. An effective method of dealing with a bug is treating the surface of structural elements with an antiseptic solution. For the same purpose, you can use acetone and nitro paint.
Wooden roofs become completely unusable due to the appearance of fungus on their surface. In this case, the best antiseptic will be a solution prepared from 950 g of sodium chloride and 50 g of boric acid. Boric acid and salt are mixed, and then 5 liters of boiling water are poured.
The surface of the wooden parts of the roofing is wiped with the resulting solution at least 4-5 times to completely destroy the fungus.
