Metal shims help insulate the seams between the window and the walls from environmental influences, in addition, they give the windows a decorative look. The structure looks like a window sill located outside. Such an ebb is used for metal-plastic and wooden windows, the presence of the product will significantly extend the life of the window.

Features of metal drips

Metal window sills, like any other materials, have their own characteristics, advantages and disadvantages. The positive properties include the following:

  • Possibility of long-term use, since a stainless material is used that can last a long time.
  • The size can be selected individually, which allows the use of ebb tills for windows of non-standard sizes.
  • This design is inexpensive. Purchasing analogs from other materials is usually not so profitable.
  • The ability to choose any color you like, thanks to which the ebb will not only fit into the concept of the facade, but will also look harmonious with the window frame.
  • Does not require special care.
  • Easy to assemble.
  • Does not lose performance when exposed to various temperature conditions.
  • Does not fade in the sun.

However, the design also has a number of disadvantages:

  • If the tide is metallic, the noise will be very strong during rain. But you can fight it using a special tape that is attached to the surface.
  • In summer, the metal gets very hot.
  • If the product does not have a special protective coating or is not made of a corrosion-resistant material, it can rust when exposed to moisture.

What types of metal shims are there?

Window drips can be made of metal or plastic. The first option is preferable and occurs more often, since plastic is afraid of exposure to high temperatures, as well as their sharp drop, as a result of which it quickly collapses. Plastics can fade in direct sunlight and become conspicuous. That is why metal window tides are in great demand. There are the following options:

  • Cink Steel. The ebb itself is made of steel sheet of a small thickness. In order to protect it from environmental influences, it is coated with zinc. Such a product is not thicker than 5 mm, can absorb vibrations when hit by rain drops, is inexpensive, but is afraid of the effects of acids and aggressive materials.
  • Polymer coated metal sheet. It is almost a complete analogue of the sheet discussed above, with the exception of one feature: a polymer coating acts as an additional protection. The base is usually polyester. It makes the tide more durable, slightly muffles the noise when drops enter, and protects against an acidic environment. The cost of this type of metal drip is slightly higher. They have a more attractive appearance, but they can get scratches, therefore, they require careful use.
  • Aluminum drips. Such materials are the most practical to use. They are easy to cut, they can be bent, while aluminum does not rust, so it does not need additional protection. The material can be painted, which is convenient if you need to make an element part of a design idea. However, it is worth remembering that if the ebb is metallic, its price is lower than that of galvanized or aluminum.

Available sizes

The width of the element can be from 9 to 40 cm: it depends not only on the size of the window itself, but also on the preferences of the owner of the room. The maximum length does not exceed 3 meters, however, for very large windows, several ebb tides can be combined. The thickness cannot be more than 1 mm, as this is impractical.

How to mount the product?

The installation of metal sills is not difficult and can be done on your own. Particular attention must be paid to the accuracy of the work, since if the instructions are not followed, errors cannot always be corrected.

Before installing the structure, you will have to prepare the place for work. To do this, you need to remove the excess foam left after the installation of the window, remove dirt and dust, and determine at what angle the ebb should be placed. Before it is installed, it is recommended to waterproof the seams. You can use silicone sealant for this.

After everything is ready, you can proceed to the second stage of work. First, you need to check the design for external flaws. If it has obvious defects, you need to take another ebb.

Before installation, the product is cut out. To do this, you need to draw it out with a felt-tip pen, purchase the side plugs corresponding to the size. The cutting line should be clear and perpendicular. In order to draw it straight, you can use a large ruler or a building level. The canvas itself can be cut with metal scissors or use a grinder for this purpose.

The edge of the ebb to be installed must be covered by a window frame. To do this, you need to wind it under it and press it tightly against the profile. The tilt angle should be approximately 10 degrees. Thanks to this, snow will not accumulate at low tide, moisture will roll down. Installation is carried out using self-tapping screws, so you will need to drill special holes for dowels in the wall. The step should be about 45 cm.

The plugs on the sides are attached with a sealant, it is most convenient to use transparent. Plugs are used not only to create a pleasant appearance of the structure, but also to protect the seams from slanting rain and snow. In addition, do not forget about the installation of a moisture-proof membrane. It will make the connections more reliable and tight. It is required to apply it on the assembly seam before the ebb is fixed.

Window metal ebb is the most practical solution for installation, as it is able not only to reliably protect the seams from moisture, but also to serve for a long time, without requiring any specific maintenance. This is a simple and inexpensive way to provide high-quality protection of the window structure.
