A cold floor, especially in winter, is a guarantee of an early cold, an uncomfortable climatic atmosphere in the house. Hence, carrying out actions to insulate the base is an urgent need. One of the options that are simple and affordable is floor insulation with foam.

Reasons for base insulation

The dwelling is not completely enclosed from heat loss. Thermal energy escapes through windows, balconies, entrance doors, walls, ceiling and floor. The latter accounts for up to 10-15% of total leaks. In reality, in old one-story houses, the base draws up to 30% of the heat.

The main tasks that the defense of the base pursues:

  • prevent the penetration of cold into the house;
  • eliminate the loss of heat energy, that is, stop “heating the street”;
  • dew point displacement (condensation), which will reduce the risk of mold, rot in the underground space;
  • rational use of the energy emitted by the "warm floor" system - most of the heat will go to heating the room.

The solution to such problems is achieved if the floor is insulated with foam.

Types of foam

Polyfoam is a separate type of polymer. It is a foamed plastic mass. Consists of individual balls-cells (granules). The variety is styrofoam. The PSB-S brand (non-pressed expanded polystyrene) is widespread. In terms of structure, 95–98% consists of gas.

The first type has a looser structure and is easily damaged by mechanical stress. But it wins in price. The second type, with comparable indicators for thermal conductivity, is stronger, but more expensive.

There is another type of insulation on the market - penoplex. Differs in density, strength. It has better thermal conductivity than the foam group. But the price is higher.

When choosing types of foam for floor insulation, it is necessary to take into account a number of factors:

  1. Installation method - on the ground, under a concrete screed, or it will be insulation of floors with foam. Here water absorption, mechanical strength and thermal conductivity play a role.
  2. Production cost. The traditional product (ball foam) has the lowest price, but it crumbles and gets damaged during the installation process. Insulation of the floor with penoplex will cost more, but the thermal protection effect is higher. It is explained by a design feature. This product has a collar around the edges. That is, the laying is done with an overlap, without the formation of a through seam.

Ease of installation. Determined by:

  • freedom of access to the object of insulation (narrow or wide room);
  • its design (the presence of external parts, for example, logs, beams, pipes);
  • evenness of the surface and other factors.

Based on this, the dimensions of the foam for floor insulation are determined. The defining parameter is the thickness of the product.

  1. The presence of sources of moisture. For private houses, this is the level of groundwater and the presence of waterproofing. The presence of moisture increases the coefficient of thermal conductivity, reducing the effectiveness of thermal insulation measures.
  2. Location of heat sources, electrical wires. This aspect is important for fire safety. Polymers are self-extinguishing, but when heated with open fire, they give off corrosive smoke that obstructs breathing.

PSB-S products are produced in sheets with dimensions (most common) 1000 x 2000 mm. Thickness is 25–500 mm. Penoplex 600 x 1200 (2400) x 20–100 mm (width, length, thickness).

What to insulate

Polyfoam for floor insulation is used in the following cases:

  • insulation of interfloor floors of a multi-storey building relevant for the first floors (the presence of a boiler or open dormer windows in the basement);
  • protection of the base of the living quarters from the penetration of cold from the side of an unheated basement or cellar;
  • thermal insulation of the slab foundation, which serves as the basis for the floor covering;
  • the creation of a layer when laying "warm floor";
  • cutting off the influence of the temperature background from the ground during the construction of frame houses or similar wooden structures.

Laying the sheeting is not a complicated process. Therefore, the operation to insulate the floor with foam plastic with their own hands is quite within the power of many people. The nuances are in the preliminary preparation of the base before installation and preliminary leveling.

The most optimal solution is to place a layer at the bottom of the floor. Thus, the flow of cold is cut off. This is possible at the initial stage of construction, or the basement has the necessary height parameters.

Soil insulation will require a hydraulic membrane device. In this capacity, you can use traditional materials - roofing material, bikrost, a thick greenhouse film, laid in criss-cross layers.

Tip: The material is deformable. Consequently, the size of the sheets and the space to be insulated may differ by 2–5 mm. This is called an interference fit.

The technology of floor insulation with foam plastic in the room consists of a number of activities:

  1. Opening the wooden base (if necessary).
  2. Removing debris, impregnating the concrete base with an acrylic primer.
  3. Installation of a waterproofing layer.
  4. Placement of the lag, fastening. It is advisable to place the supports taking into account the observance of the strength, stiffness of the wooden floor and the size of the insulation.
  5. Next, lay the foam on the floor. Plates are laid without the formation of through seams.
  6. A layer of vapor barrier is laid. The finished floor is being mounted.

Council. Through seams are eliminated with polyurethane foam - it holds the plates together and has thermal insulation properties.

For private housing construction, the insulation is laid in advance on the floor and poured with a concrete screed.
