Dismantling plastic windows is a process that the owner of any home faces at least once in his life. Most often, this action has to be performed when replacing old windows with new ones or when replacing a damaged profile; often, after buying an apartment, plastic windows from the developer are immediately changed to more expensive, thicker and high-quality ones. Even if you are not going to do the work with your own hands, about how it should go, knowledge will not hurt.

Which windows should you choose?

The choice of a new plastic window depends on the needs of the owner, the characteristics of the climate of the region in which the building is located. If you live in a warm region, then there is no point in installing too thick double-glazed windows: this will make repairs more expensive, but will not add practical benefits.

When choosing a window, you should not save on quality, because if you take into account how much it costs to dismantle a window and then buy a new one, the difference will not be in the most favorable direction. It turns out that it is more profitable to buy a more expensive, but high-quality window at once.

For central Russia and more northern cities, it is recommended to use a triple glass unit or a product of greater thickness. Of course, you need to be guided by price and quality. Modern PVC windows serve for a long time, at least 50 years, therefore, by immediately choosing a high-quality and stylish design, you will ensure yourself a comfortable stay for many years.

If you have already installed plastic windows, but you are not satisfied with their design or color, you do not have to dismantle the plastic window, changing it to something else. You can use a variety of films or paints and freshen up the frame by adapting it to the style of the interior. The glasses are also changed individually.

How is dismantling done?

Removing a plastic window is not the most difficult task, especially if you do not need to keep the window intact. Dismantling plastic windows with your own hands is quite affordable if you have a suitable set of tools, a little theoretical knowledge and enough time.

It is more convenient to do any work together. Plastic structures have an impressive weight, and not always one person can handle them.

Like any other work, the dismantling and installation of plastic windows should begin with a preparatory stage. Please note that when removing the window there will be a lot of dust and debris, so in advance you need not only to clear access to the window opening, removing all the obstructing furniture, but also, if possible, remove the interior items from the room or at least cover them with a protective film. Carpets and other surfaces that can absorb dust well should be removed from the room.

The list of tools that will be required during work:

  • A utility knife or any sharp kitchen knife.
  • Putty knife.
  • Chisel.
  • Several screwdrivers.
  • Small scrap.
  • Screwdriver.
  • Hammer drill or power drill.
  • Hacksaw for metal.
  • Chisel.
  • Hammer and pliers.

The first stage of work

First of all, regardless of which plastic windows are planned to be dismantled (deaf or opening), it is necessary to remove the glass unit from the frame. This will not only facilitate the work, making the window much easier, but also secure it. If the glass unit has no value, is damaged, or you plan to saw the frame and throw it away, you can simply knock it out, but this will lead to small glass falling on the floor. It will be difficult to get rid of them, so in any case it is recommended to carefully pull out the structure.

If the window has opening sashes, they must be removed. To do this, you need to unwind the loop; it is not difficult to do this - you need to remove the decorative strip from the hinge, then unscrew the adjusting bolt and release the element. It is more convenient to start from the bottom, then unscrew the top. In order for the sash to be removed, it must be slightly raised up. This method of removing a PVC window will not only make the structure easier and simplify its removal, but also eliminate the need to adjust the window if you mount it somewhere else.

If the hinges are of such a design that does not allow the sash to be released in this way, simply unscrew the entire hinge from the frame and remove it together with the sash: usually the structure is supported by self-tapping screws.

Dismantling the window, if it is deaf, is carried out according to the same principle, but since the sashes do not open, you just need to pull out the glass unit. To do this, you need to pull out the glazing beads that fix it. The first to pull out the longest, located on the side of the room. In order to make it convenient to pull out these elements, you can use a small spatula, the edges of which are rounded. You need to start work from the middle of the window. After you squeeze out the glazing bead a little, you have a gap, thanks to which the element can be easily pulled out. You can remove the glass unit.

If you have mounting suction cups, it is better to pull out the glass unit with their help.

The next stage of work

Dismantling of a plastic window can be started after removing the glass unit. To do this, you need to knock down the plaster around it; if the window slopes are not plastered, but made of removable material, they just need to be unscrewed.

The window sill ebb is attached to self-tapping screws, so they need to be unscrewed, and then it will be possible to disrupt the ebb and the window sill itself.

How is the frame attached and how to dismantle it?

Knowing how much it costs to dismantle a plastic window, and this amount is about the same as installation, many owners remove windows themselves. To dismantle the frame, you will need to study how it is fixed. If the product is held with the help of anchoring joints and plates, then they will need to be unscrewed or torn off without damage to the structure. The foam must be removed: you can use a hacksaw for this. After all the fastening elements have been removed, the frame can be pry off with a crowbar (it is more convenient to do this in the middle of the lower part) and pulled out of the window opening.

The cost of dismantling windows is not too high, however, it is quite possible to save on the service by doing everything yourself. It is not so difficult to carry out the work on your own, given that they do not require a complex tool or special skills.
