DIY roof repair
After a certain time, even the most durable roof becomes unusable and you have to change either the entire coating as a whole, or some fragments of the roof.
Often, during the cleaning of the roof from ice and snow, the roofing is damaged: clamps and nails fly out, deep scratches and even cracks appear on the surface.
As a result, moisture entering the potholes becomes the cause of corrosion of the roofing material and a violation of the temperature regime inside the building. If you do not fix such damage, and do not repair the roof of the roof of the house, then such a coating will become completely unusable in a year and a half and it will have to be laid again.
Often, premature damage to the roof is provoked by the opening of seams in the folds and the formation of cracks along the lines of their fold, which can also appear on the surface of gutters, funnels and drainpipes.
The folds can be restored in the following way: open and re-clamp the standing folds; press down, cover with paint or linseed oil, after which it is good to smear the recumbent folds with red putty. The ingredients of red lead putty are 2 parts of natural drying oil, 1 part of red lead ground into powder, 2 parts of crushed white and 4 parts of chalk.
If the gutters have been subjected to mechanical stress, then first of all, remove the damaged areas, and then replace with new steel sheets. In this case, the seams must be connected with double lying folds and smeared with red lead putty. In the event that small cracks, up to 3 mm in size, have formed on the surface of the gutters, they can be repaired with red lead putty. It is best to fill large holes with tow, a piece of burlap or a fleece of felt soaked in thick oil paint.
To fix a hole, the dimensions of which do not exceed 14 cm, a patch should be applied to the roof, previously cleaned of dirt and dust and treated with linseed oil, by attaching it with oil-bi-fog mastic. The patch should overlap the damaged area on all sides by at least 10-12 cm.
Roof repair technology
Roof sections with holes over 14 cm are sealed with steel sheets. Such a patch is placed in the full width of the picture or fixed by placing it along the lathing between two standing folds so that the new seam (the junction of the old roofing sheet and the patch) lies on the base, but in no case between the purlins. A patch sheet should be prepared in advance, for which you need to bend the edges for recumbent and standing folds. Then the patch is applied to the place of damage and connected first of all with the recumbent roof folds, and then with the standing folds.
If it is necessary to completely replace the cover sheet, take a new one and connect it with single or double lying folds with the old sheets. It is important to thoroughly coat the formed seams with red lead putty.
If the sheet of the wall gutter is corroded, it must be replaced with a new one, which must be connected to the adjacent ones using double lying folds.
Roof repairs can include both new steel sheets and usable old ones. Previously, the old material should be cleaned of dirt and dust, the factory grease should be wiped off the new one, and then the surface of the sheets should be coated on both sides.
If all sheets of the roof are damaged, the coating must be replaced in small areas to prevent moisture from entering under the roof, into the attic through the formed "windows".

First of all, the edges are folded on the prepared sheets, and then they are connected two or three in width into pictures. If the paintings will be placed in the length of the roof slope, they should be connected along the long sides with single or double standing seams.
To protect the coating from the negative effects of condensation, it is necessary to cover the beams or boards going to the crate, as well as the roofing material with two layers of paint and dry thoroughly.
Re-laid steel sheets are attached using T-shaped crutches (along the eaves) and clamps (to the sheathing bars).
Upon completion of the repair work, the roof should be covered with paint, free of dust and dirt. Then the coating must be checked for defects, and it is best to do this together. The roofer in the attic, when a hole or crack is found, with a knock, notifies his assistant, who marks the damaged areas with chalk. Small cracks are closed with red lead putty.
The folds must be carefully covered by removing the excess putty with a knife, after which the cracks should be filled with a piece of tarpaulin or burlap and covered with paint.
It is recommended to pre-soak such a patch in drying oil or hold it for a few minutes in a solution prepared from iron or lead red lead and natural drying oil. The squeezed rag should be placed on the surface of the coating, pressed firmly and carefully smoothed with a spatula or hand. When the patch is completely dry (within 6-7 days), the dust-free roof must be covered with paint.
If rust forms on the surface of the roofing sheets from the attic side, the damaged areas should be thoroughly cleaned with a stiff bristled brush and covered with two to three coats of paint. Only after eliminating all defects (holes and cracks) on both sides of the roof can the coating begin to be painted.
To get a shiny and even roof surface, you need to take your paint choice seriously. You should choose only prepared on the basis of natural drying oil. The quality of the paint deteriorates if, in its preparation, coarse-ground pigment or a mixture of linseed oil and dry paint is used, and the ingredients are mixed by hand.
Ordinary cover is painted with a large swinging brush. The paint should be applied in a thin even layer, first from the eaves overhang, and then, on the contrary, from the ridge to the eaves. If the paint is applied in an excessively thick layer, it may wrinkle and crack after drying. During operation in such cracks, moisture will accumulate, which will provoke premature deterioration of the coating.
Downpipes are removed before painting and thoroughly cleaned of dirt and dust, after which they are covered with several coats of oil paint. In this case, each layer must be well dried, otherwise the surface of the paint will swell and bubbles will form on it after drying.
To prevent the formation of rust on the coating and its further corrosion, it is necessary to apply a special rust converter to its surface with a spray gun or brush before painting.
When interacting with rust, it provokes the formation of a protective phosphate layer that protects the steel roofing sheets from damage.
