The quality and service life of the entire finish depends on how correctly the mixture for plastering the walls is made. What types of products are there and how to accurately make a solution you will learn in this article! An overview of the compositions and solutions with which the walls are plastered.
Cement
Among the most common are cement. Suitable for temperate climates, sets thoroughly within 12 hours, is highly durable and affordable.
Clay
It is used for finishing wooden surfaces, a relatively strong binder. It is breathable and has high thermal insulation properties.
Limestone
Most often it is performed in tandem with stucco to improve the strength and reliability of the composition. Slaked lime is used for solutions. Stucco accelerates the setting and increases the hardening rate of the finish. It does not shrink and can be used neat.
Combined
In such a solution, various constituent components (cement, lime, gypsum, etc.) are used.
Special plaster.
An appropriate additive is introduced into the mixture to form various types of finishing coat (decorative cladding).
Proportions of mortar for plastering walls

Cooking cement mortar
Cement mixes for wall plastering can be divided into 2 types:
- with the addition of sand to the main ingredient - for leveling surfaces (adhesion with such impurities in plaster is poor);
- with lime admixture.
It is possible to add special polymer additives and mineral fillers to each of these compositions. Thanks to them, the mixture becomes more plastic and frost-resistant.
Do-it-yourself cement mortar for plastering walls is prepared as follows:
- Take 1 part of cement.
- 3 pieces of sand.
- Water in the required amount so that the mixture is creamy.
- Liquid soap for soap solution.
All ingredients are mixed in the right proportions, all lumps and irregularities are removed, the mixture is ground several times. It should be of a uniform color.
ATTENTION! In order not to translate "product", it is better to make a solution in small quantities. Indeed, after 40 minutes, the mixture will begin to lose its basic properties, which will lead to a poor-quality surface finish.
The composition of the wall plaster mortar may be too greasy when it adheres to the trowel. When dry, it will shrink strongly, and the surface will crack over time.
Plastering the walls with cement mortar of normal consistency leaves a thin layer of mortar on the building material, which allows you to carefully process all irregularities and achieve a high-quality result.
The "skinny" composition of the wall plaster needs to be corrected, add more cement and mix thoroughly.
RECOMMENDATION! A mortar for plaster with a limited amount of sand turns out to be less plastic, therefore the correct ratio is 1: 3.
Tips for preparing other types of wall finishing solutions
- A solution for plastering walls on a lime basis is made as follows: 1 part lime and 2-3 parts sand, depending on the desired consistency. The mixture is used immediately after preparation.
- The clay mixture for plaster retains its qualities for a long time; to obtain the required solution, mix the soaked clay with sand, add the required amount of water and knead to a creamy consistency. It is good to coat the outer parts of coal stoves and pipes with such a solution.
- To prepare a lime-gypsum solution for plastering walls, you must first pour water into a container, then add gypsum and mix thoroughly. All work must be done quickly, and not immediately knead a large amount of the mixture. Composition: one part of cement, 1/2 part of slaked lime, 5 parts of sand and 300 ml of liquid soap.
- The preparation of cement mortar for plaster with the addition of lime will be made by mixing a dry mixture of sand and cement with an aqueous solution of lime.
Step-by-step instructions for creating a lime-based mixture
The main binder must be rubbed in a trough in order to eliminate all lumps. Then add a little water and sand and mix thoroughly again. When a homogeneous dough forms, add 3 parts of sand to one part of lime. Add water as needed. You can use such a composition for plastering walls during the day until it loses its main functions.
Gypsum can be added to the plaster mix to accelerate the setting. It is important to take into account several rules: before making a solution, you need to divide areas that can be freely covered in a short period of time. After all, after 6 minutes, the plaster solution completely sets and hardens.
If you make the solution less thick, then the solidification will be slower, but the coated ones will turn out to be loose and not so strong. Building gypsum does not shrink the layer, on such a basis you can immediately glue wallpaper, which cannot be said about cement plaster.

Clay in wall cladding
The clay composition of the interior wall plaster is made of alumina and sand. The main "ingredient" is pre-soaked with water, then sand is poured into the solution and a little water is added to mix the homogeneous mass.

Dry plaster mixes
When buying dry mixes, it is important to consider several recommendations:
- Do not buy an unknown manufacturer of plaster mix. The German company "Knauf" is highly popular, the price for products is slightly higher than for domestic products, but the quality is well deserved. Inexpensive plaster mixes include the firms "Strateli", "Yunis", "Osnovit", "Volma".
- It is better to level walls made of foam concrete with gypsum mixtures, it absorbs moisture well. Therefore, after the completion of construction work, the surface must be sprayed with water several times.
- Gypsum mixes are more expensive than cement mixes, but the consumption of the first is 10 kg per square meter, and the second is 13-16.
- You should not buy cement mixtures for plastering walls in large quantities, it is better to buy several packages, and then buy more in order to protect yourself from fakes.
- In case of improper storage, gypsum plasters set within 10 minutes after mixing, and cement plasters will slide off the wall.
How to prepare the plaster base?
The thing is that even the best plaster of the correct preparation can “lie” incorrectly on the surface if it was poorly cleaned before applying the mixture. What needs to be done?
First of all, remove the weak old plaster, remove old paints. Extend the seams of the brickwork, leave voids and irregularities as they are.
Secondly, cover the base with a primer and allow time to dry. Next, we prepare the finishing mixture and proceed to applying the solution.
Thirdly, after 40 minutes, the final alignment can be performed.
ATTENTION! It is not recommended to work with the plaster mixture in very hot weather, as well as in rainy or frosty weather. Such indicators significantly reduce the properties of the material.
Plastering walls with cement mortar on lighthouses
Plastering the walls with plaster mortar with your own hands is carried out along the beacons, if there are significant flaws in the wall. In order for the surface to be flat, it is necessary to carefully control the application of the composition in the horizontal and vertical areas along the entire wall.
For better quality plaster on weak wall bases, you need to use a plaster mesh. There are metal and plastic nets.

The layer of applied material should be at least 2 cm. To build the lighthouses, you will need a level, a cord, a plastering device, gypsum and the metal profiles themselves. Lighthouses are installed at a distance of 15-20 cm from the edge of the wall.
Now we fill up all the bumps and irregularities with a solution according to the set level. It is important to achieve a level plane, both vertically and horizontally. Be sure to let the material dry and after a short period of time it will be possible to putty the wall or place other decorative materials.
The technology is complex, but if you follow all the rules of specialists, it is possible to do it yourself. All the more, you will save a lot of money on the procedure yourself.
Thanks to all the advice of professionals, everyone can easily carry out plastering of both internal and external surfaces, making the walls of their home beautiful, even, practical and durable.

Dry mixes for plaster and universal compositions
It is very convenient to use dry building mixtures for the preparation of plaster. To prepare a solution for plaster, it is enough to add water to the mixture and mix well. Plaster solutions prepared on the basis of dry building mixtures are used both for external finishing works and for internal works. Plaster mixes are also used to level walls and ceilings. At the same time, the use of dry mixes for finishing wall and ceiling surfaces increases the thermal insulation and sound insulation of the premises. Also, layers of plaster are additional protection of building structures from adverse natural phenomena.

Depending on what filler is used in the dry mix (fine or coarse sand), plaster mixes are conventionally divided into fine and coarse. The size of the grains of sand in the plaster mix affects the way the mortar is applied to the wall or ceiling surface. Finely dispersed solutions have greater plasticity, are more convenient to work with, and are more economical. Plasters made on a cement or cement-lime base are usually used for interior decoration in wet and dry rooms. Gypsum plaster dry mixes are very convenient for surface finishing, which also fit very well on ceramic bricks.

Surfaces finished with such plaster are very even, which means that much less putty is required. Before starting plastering with gypsum dry mixes, the surface must be prepared. About 15-30 minutes before plastering, the surface is moistened with water. Then leveling layers of plaster are laid. After the leveling layers have hardened, face plaster layers are applied to them. If the previously laid layers have not yet dried, and the face layers are applied to them, then this can lead to the following defects. Cracks that have formed in the inner layers can spread to the outer layers. It is possible that the face layer will slip from the previously laid, but not dried layer. Therefore, it is necessary to apply layers of plaster on a hard surface. Places of plaster that are crumbling must be removed.
Universal mixtures
Universal dry mixes are used for finishing various surfaces. They are very convenient for various types of repair and leveling of walls and ceilings made of almost any building material. Universal mixes can be used for both interior and exterior finishing works. The main binder of the mixture is cement CP 500 DO, and the filler is fractional sand.
Before using a solution from a universal mixture, the surface must be cleaned of various dirt and dust. Then it is advisable to make notches on the surface, for better adhesion of the surface with the solution. Then the surface should be thoroughly wetted with water. To prepare a solution from a universal dry mixture, pour the mixture into a container with water and mix well until a homogeneous mass is obtained.
