The walls of premises, be they brick, plasterboard or concrete, often receive damage of various kinds. Because of this, holes are often formed in them. Understand how to patch up a hole in the wall, even for someone who has no experience in construction work. It is not difficult to cover up holes, but in order to do it efficiently, you need to understand that the nature of the work depends on the material from which the wall is built.

Covering holes in the wall

Sealing holes in brick or concrete walls, like any other business, begins with preparation. The first thing to do is estimate the size of the hole.

To seal small holes you will need:

  • vacuum cleaner;
  • small spatula;
  • pliers;
  • dowel nail.

The hole is cleaned from the inside with a dowel-nail clamped in a pair of pliers. Further, all small construction waste is removed with a vacuum cleaner. The cleaned hole is covered with putty. The movements with the spatula should be simultaneously pressing and leveling.

Remember that the aesthetic qualities of the wall will depend on how well the hole is cleaned.

If the hole is large, then first you need to decide what to seal the wall with. Alabaster, plaster, or cement mortar are good choices.

You will need the following tools:

  1. Spatulas large and small.
  2. Alabaster, plaster or cement mortar - your choice.
  3. Sandpaper.
  4. Sponge.

As with sealing small holes, you first need to clean the surface of the crumbled plaster. Then you need to moisten the cleaned area and wait until it dries. Then you can putty the hole and the area around it. When the material is hardened, it needs to be sanded with sandpaper.

Sealing a hole in a plasterboard wall

Questions about how to repair a hole in drywall arise more often, since this material is less durable than brick or concrete. In this case, it is not easy to cover up the wall, but to restore the damaged section of the wall. You will need:

  • pencil and ruler;
  • putty knife;
  • screwdriver;
  • hacksaw;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • sandpaper;
  • putty;
  • drywall and wooden board.

Using a hacksaw, the hole is rectangular. For this, the contours are first drawn with a pencil. Now you need a wooden board or profile.

It is necessary to choose a plank so that its width is slightly less than the diagonal of the hole, and the length exceeds the width of the hole by 6–12 cm.

The plank is placed on the back of the wall. In order to fix it, you must first screw the self-tapping screw into the center of the board, it will serve as a "handle" for fastening. After fixing the board, the "handle" can be removed.

After screwing in the self-tapping screws that hold the board, they must be "sunk" into the drywall. Otherwise they will interfere and look ugly.

Next, a plasterboard plate is cut out corresponding to the size and shape of the hole, it is screwed to the board with self-tapping screws, and a fiberglass tape is glued on top. After that, the main and finishing layer of putty is applied. When the glue dries, the surface is rubbed with sandpaper.

Those who have not worked with drywall before have difficulty cutting it. How to get an even piece:

  1. First you need to draw a contour along which you will cut, on both sides of the sheet.
  2. Next, you should make deep cuts along the outlined lines.
  3. Then, holding the main section with your hand, you need to break the sheet, this does not require much effort.

Before filling the hole in the drywall, you should estimate the size of the hole. If it is too large, then you should not bother with the manufacture and installation of the patch. In this case, it is better to resort to a complete sheet replacement.

Sealing other types of holes

Some practical tips for filling holes in ceilings and walls, depending on their type.

Cracks in the junction of the floor with the wall

They are closed in the same way as holes in the walls, with one peculiarity - before stripping, the gap must be widened by 5-10 mm along its entire length. This will give better adhesion to the new plaster.

Holes in the ceiling after falling plaster

The easiest way is to simply cover it with a new layer of plaster, but this decision will not be correct, since soon the hole will appear again, because it is not easy to remove the "symptom", but to completely cure the "diseased organism". The order of work is as follows:

  1. Before repairing the hole in the ceiling, you need to thoroughly clean the damaged surface. It is important to do it well.
  2. Treat the surface with an anti-fungal agent, because it is the fungus that is most often the cause of plaster shedding.
  3. Bypass the hole and the area around it with a primer.
  4. Putty the surface in 2-3 layers, depending on the required thickness, and do not forget that each layer must be allowed to dry.
  5. Rub the ceiling and re-prime.

Cracks at the junction of panels

A problem that often occurs in panel buildings. They are sealed in the same way as cracks between the ceiling and the wall, but for reliability, you need to glue a fiberglass mesh along the entire length.

Holes near the risers

Often, plumbing work to replace the riser is carried out in bad faith and after their completion, cracks and holes appear. Small holes up to 5 mm can be filled with silicone sealant.

Larger holes are more difficult, you need to make a simple reinforcement, then fill the hole. When the foam hardens, it is necessary to cut it 5-10 mm above the ceiling level, and putty with gypsum filler. If the hole is large, then Rotband is perfect, which is used for plaster.
