The purpose of the tiled roof is not only to cover and protect the roof from negative external influences, but also to perform the function of decorative decoration, often transforming a small country cottage beyond recognition and making it look like a fairytale house. In addition, a tiled roof has a number of advantages, among which a long service life, fire safety, and ease of installation can be distinguished.
Installation and installation of tiled roofs
The mass of the tiles is quite significant, so the structure of the lathing should weigh more, for example, lathing for asbestos-plywood or asbestos cement. The roof slope must be at least 40-45 °.
The lathing under the roof, which will subsequently be tiled, is made of wide boards or wooden bars with a cross-section of 0.5 x 0.5 or 0.6 x 0.4 cm. The prepared bars or boards are laid out along the line of the eaves then the tiles of the upper row should easily fit into the rim of the tiles of the lower one.
The number of horizontal and vertical rows of tiles composing must necessarily be equal to an integer.

Attach boards or bars should be guided from the ridge to the cornice. Upon completion of the construction of the lathing, it is necessary to lay boards 15 cm wide along the edge of the cornice.
To carry out work on laying the tiles was more convenient, it is better to attach an equalizing rail along the cornice edge of the board.
Next, the tiles are raised to the roof and laid out on bridges up to 5 m long so that it is enough to make 2-3 rows. Subsequent work is performed by the roofer sitting on a triangular bench attached to the safety crate.
Flat strip tiles can be installed in two ways: in flakes and in two layers. Regardless of the method, laying is carried out first from the main slopes, then on the hip ribs and, last of all, on the ridge.
Flat tape shingles on the main slopes should be laid in parallel rows going from the eaves to the ridge so that the tiles of the lower row are covered by the tiles of the upper one. In this case, each odd row should be completed with whole tiles, and an even row with halves. As a result, the bricks should move slightly relative to each other.
The first row of shingles must be spiked on the inner edge of the two bottom battens. The tiles that make up the second row are attached to the top of the tiles in the first row. The bricks of the subsequent rows are fastened in the same way as the tiles of the first, and at the ridge - like the second.
The tiles laid along the pediment and cornice overhangs, regardless of the angle of inclination of the roof, are attached to the battens of the sheathing. In the remaining rows, only the second and third shingles should be attached.

The flat tape shingles are fixed on the battens of the sheathing with nails and clamps, which can be driven in in pairs. First of all, you should hook the shingles with spikes to the purlin, then along the entire row you need to install the clamps so that their horizontal flap is on top of the tile, and it would be possible to bring the next brick under the left one.
The lapels, visible from the outside, are subsequently blocked by the overlying row. The ends of the clamps are attached from the side of the attic to the sheathing bars.

Types of tiled roofs and applications

Now there are several types of flat tape shingles.
The most common shingles are of the "beaver tail" type. They put it in one row on a specially prepared solution (the method of its preparation will be described below). Usually the material consumption is 32 pieces per 1 m 2. If the tiles are supposed to be laid in two rows, then the consumption will be 45 pieces per 1 m 2.
To prepare a bonding solution, you need to mix sand, lime and cement previously sifted through a sieve in a ratio of 5: 1: 1 and fill with water. Then the resulting mixture must be thoroughly mixed, controlling its consistency. The finished solution should not be too greasy, because, while hardening, it can shrink strongly, forming cracks. It is necessary to strictly comply with the amount of cement taken to the norm. Otherwise, the solution will be too strong, provoking significant loss of material during repairs.
In addition to the "beaver tail" tiles, baking sheet or Dutch tiles are often used. Lay it with scales, attaching it with nails or clamps to the sheathing bars.
Grooved tape shingles differ from flat ones by the presence of a longitudinal cut-groove designed for optimal bonding of materials.

Slotted tiles are used to cover simple roofs, one or two slopes. It is attached in one layer in the direction from the pediment, along the cornice, to the ridge, where the rows are parallel to each other. When laying out the tiles, an overlap should be made: in length - by 0.7-0.8 cm, and in width - by an amount equal to the width of the groove. Usually, the first two rows are laid by roofers, standing on scaffolding or scaffolding, the next - sitting on a triangular bench fixed to the sheathing beams.
The difference between grooved stamped tiles from the two above is the presence, in addition to longitudinal, transverse closures. Thus, along the entire perimeter, the bricks are fastened together with closed folds, preventing moisture from entering under the roofing.
Stamped tiles are laid in one layer, observing the direction from the eaves overhang to the ridge and making an overlap along the length and width of the tile by the length or width of the rebate.
It is attached to the crate with a wire stretched through the eyelet of a brick. Her shingles are tied to a nail previously driven into the sheathing bar.
Upon completion of the work, the formed horizontal seams must be thoroughly smeared with straw cutting, mixed with a solution of lime and sand, cement mortar with the addition of tow (hemp), clay to prevent the wind from blowing the tiled roof.
The ridge and the ribs of the roof are trimmed with ridge grooved tiles, specially made for this. In this case, the ridge should be tiled in the direction from top to bottom, and the edges - in the reverse order, that is, from bottom to top.
Next, the joints of the ridge and ribs should be sealed using a galvanized steel roof outlet and cement mortar prepared shortly before. The shingles must be planted in mortar and attached with wire to a nail previously driven into the sheathing bar. See also other types of roofing materials and choose a more suitable one.
