At a recent meeting of the Commission for the Modernization and Development of the Economy, the President of the Russian Federation said: "Internet to every home!" Achieving this goal as soon as possible, while maintaining quality and ensuring reliability, is possible using diamond drilling technology.

This statement by the president prompted the intensification of the activities of not only Internet providers, but also construction companies, which began to fight for the state order. This is quite understandable, because the Internet is a task, including for construction companies (especially at the initial stage of its implementation), requiring the use of modern technologies.

An interesting task was set - and as a result, an equally interesting and innovative solution was found. This means that diamond drilling technology, which is actively gaining leadership in the construction industry and replacing conventional methods (the use of rock drills and jackhammers), will now be used for laying Internet cables in residential, administrative and industrial buildings.

Diamond drilling is the modern and most effective method used to make holes in stone, concrete, brick and other high strength materials, which can be explained by the following obvious advantages.

  • Ability to perform work at high speed and productivity.
  • The resulting holes are perfectly sized and flat, which eliminates the need for additional processing.
  • Lack of dustiness in the working area and low vibration level during work.
  • Hard-to-reach places and confined spaces are not a problem when using diamond drilling technology. Work can be carried out close to the surface of walls, floors, ceilings, as well as at an angle to the surface.
  • When drilling, no damage is caused to the supporting structure of the building, cracks and chips are not formed.

It is because of these undeniable advantages that diamond drilling technology has long been successfully used in the laying of various communication systems (ventilation, heating and others) in residential buildings. And only recently it began to be actively used for the development of telecommunication networks, and in particular, laying Internet cables has become one of the priority areas in the field of diamond drilling.

Typically, laying a cable for the Internet in residential buildings includes the following steps: drilling holes in the floors in common areas and laying cables in them using special plastic pipes. To make holes in interfloor floors, there is specialized equipment that uses diamond drilling technology and is designed to make holes in concrete, reinforced concrete, masonry.

The engine, bed and cutting tool (diamond core bit) are the basic elements of any diamond drilling machine. Since the capacity and configuration of the installations significantly depend on what kind of work is planned to be performed, technicians advise when choosing the type of installation to be guided by the following technical characteristics:

1) Engine power and mobility

Drilling machines with a 1.6 - 2.0 kW motor are small in size, weigh up to 17 kg and, which is important, are affordable. Such a relatively low power is quite enough for drilling holes in interfloor ceilings, small size and weight determine mobility. These factors, combined with the affordable price, make it possible to conclude that such installations are the most efficient for laying Internet cables.

2) Method of fixing the bed

The base is a support for the engine, and with which the drilling unit is fixed to the surface in which the holes will be made. The main common methods of fastening the drilling unit are fastening with a spacer bar and anchoring.

The use of installations with an anchoring method when performing work in residential premises is limited due to the fact that they require additional holes to be made specifically for fastening. Therefore, in such cases, installations with fastening using a spacer bar made in the form of a pin are usually used, which rests on the floor with one end and against the ceiling with the other. This method is especially convenient for work carried out in residential premises, precisely because there is no need to drill additional holes. There are other methods of fastening - vacuum, through fastening with a hairpin, as well as using special platforms, but they are less common.

3) Additional equipment

When carrying out drilling work in residential buildings, it is very important to take all measures in order to reduce the noise level as much as possible and protect the surrounding area from the generated dust. For this, some models of drilling units are equipped with additional equipment - water pumps (manual or electric), through which water is supplied during the drilling process, as well as industrial vacuum cleaners that collect dust from the drilling area. The use of drilling machines equipped with such additional units ensures that drilling works can be carried out without contamination of the surrounding space.

4) Diamond core bit

A diamond core bit is a cutting element of a drilling machine, made in the form of a cylinder with diamond segments fixed in it. The parameters of holes that can be made with their help vary within wide limits: diameter - from 12 mm to 600 mm, and depth - up to 4 m. The Russian market offers a wide range of diamond bits, so it is very important to choose a tool of not only high quality, but and appropriate to the type of work performed. The experts of the Adel Group of Companies recommend taking into account the following indicators when choosing:

  • Drilling speed. The core drilling speed can be varied from 10 mm / min to 60 mm / min. It is significantly influenced by the properties of the processed material and the power of the drilling equipment.
  • Hole quality. This indicator is usually high for all diamond core bits of any manufacturer. The shape and surface quality of the holes made with diamond core bits are such that, as a rule, additional processing is not required.
  • Lifetime of the crown. The service life of the crown depends on the material being drilled. Crowns manufactured by Adel Group have a high service life.
  • Price. The price of a diamond bit depends on its size (diameter and length) and can vary greatly depending on the manufacturer.
  • Availability. An important factor when performing urgent work is the constant availability of diamond crowns in warehouses, the possibility of urgent purchase and replacement, it is also important when performing non-standard orders the presence of non-standard crowns.
  • Possibility of multiple recovery. If the crown has the ability to rebuild it many times, this can significantly reduce costs, since instead of purchasing a new crown, it is sufficient to restore the old one.

Only a small proportion of diamond tool suppliers meet all the criteria for quality diamond core bits. This is due to the fact that there are not so many manufacturers of diamond tools in Russia, and only manufacturers can fulfill a non-standard or urgent order and provide a guarantee for their products. There are no more than five well-known manufacturers of diamond tools in Russia, confidently guaranteeing the fulfillment of all the conditions listed above.

Experts advise to pay close attention to the diameter of the diamond core bit. Typically, construction companies use crown bits with a diameter of 52 mm. This is a common mistake, as the diameter of the drilled hole is nearly the same as the pipe in which the cable is laid. But it is worth considering the fact that in the process of work there is a gradual abrasion of the crown against concrete or brick, the diameter of the drilled hole decreases over time and it becomes too tight for the pipe. To prevent such problems, as well as for effective long-term operation of the instrument, you should choose bits with a diameter of 56 - 58 mm.

It is also worth paying attention to the length of the crown, experts recommend a length of 450 mm. This crown can be reconditioned up to five times, which significantly reduces costs. And when choosing a professional high-quality tool, for example, the Adel diamond core drill, you can drill up to 50 floors, the average thickness of which is about 25 cm.

Diamond drilling and drilling technology continues to evolve. Today, to fulfill the tasks facing the telecommunications sector, and above all, to ensure the availability of the Internet to any Russian, only the most advanced highly effective methods are used, including diamond drilling technologies.
