Manual scraping of old parquet
The parquet floor, loved by many, gives the design of any room a special charm and chic. But over time, it ages, the varnish wears off, the wood dries up somewhat and it's time for repairs. The best solution in this case is to invite professional craftsmen with all the necessary tools and equipment, since different types of wood require a different approach to parquet repair. But if you are confused by how much such a “pleasure” costs or there is no way to invite a master for other reasons, you can repair the parquet with your own hands. If it is very old, chips, cracks, irregularities appeared, of course, first of all, these defects must be eliminated. Recall that a more complete version of the repair of this coating is described in the previous article, repairing an old parquet with your own hands, the stages of varnishing are also described. Be sure to read it after this article.
Scraping old parquet
Loose parquet floors are fixed by hammering a nail to the very head (and even slightly deepening it into the wood) into a small drilled hole.
The creaking floorboards are fastened together with wooden pins, greased with wood or PVA glue and hammered into a hole drilled at an angle of about 45 ○. After the glue dries, the pin is carefully cut off.
All defects, as well as places where nails are hammered or pins are inserted, are carefully putty with a mixture of sawdust and varnish, which will later be used to cover the parquet.

The gaps between the parquet boards can be repaired with a special paste. Experts recommend to use putty paste, primer and varnish produced by the same manufacturer in order to avoid the "conflict" of the materials used. In order to save paste and efforts to seal cracks, it makes sense to use a stencil that will protect the floorboards themselves from getting putty. Depending on the temperature and humidity in the room, the paste will dry in half an hour or an hour. Then the putty areas should be sanded using sanding paper No. 100, remove the resulting dust with a vacuum cleaner, if necessary, remove all traces of putty on the wood with sandpaper No. 120.
Now you have to decide if your floor can in principle be scrubbed. If the thickness of your parquet board is 15 mm, then it can be processed manually five times, thin 8 mm - no more than three times.
If it is impossible to polish the old parquet or you don’t want to do it, then the darkened parts must be treated with coarse sandpaper to a light layer. To remove small particles of varnish, wipe the treated surfaces with acetone, open with BF-6 glue and treat again with acetone.
If the parquet can be looped, then at the slightest opportunity it is better to entrust this difficult process to professionals, especially since the cost of such work is quite affordable. You can, of course, buy an electric car to simplify the process, but their price is quite high, and you will have to use it extremely rarely. It is better, as a last resort, to rent a car. This will significantly save you time and effort.

But if, nevertheless, you like scraping the parquet with your own hands and you are not afraid of dust, the duration of the process itself and the upcoming significant physical efforts, then purchase a ready-made cycle in a building materials store. It is much more convenient to work with it than with any home-made devices. It should be borne in mind that working with cycles with a shorter handle is somewhat more difficult, but much more efficient - the processing result is better.
Remove the top layer of wood by pressing down on the cycle evenly and sliding it along the wood grain. In this case, the scraping of the old parquet will be neat and the surface will be smooth. In this case, do not forget to sharpen the cutting surface of the cycle from time to time.
Manual scraping of parquet

The area of the floor to be treated is sprayed or moistened with water so that scraping the parquet on your own is less tiring. Some people advise to iron the treated area through a damp cloth with a hot iron. The process must start from the middle of the room and lead the strip to the wall. The strips to be processed must overlap and run continuously from start to finish. While cycling the old parquet, each strip is performed in the forward and reverse direction.
No matter how time-consuming and tedious the process of manual scraping of floors, but this is only the next stage of preparing the floor for varnishing. The next stage is grinding. To give rest to the hands that have worked hard during the previous process, an electric floor polisher can be adapted for grinding by attaching a cloth-based sandpaper to the brush. If there is no polisher, then the sandpaper will have to be moved with your foot, which can press the paper harder to the floor and speed up the process. A layer of rubber glue on the back of the sandpaper will give it a better grip on your shoes.
After that, it remains only to open everything with varnish, see this stage at the link at the beginning of the article. It should be borne in mind that darkened areas of wood that could not be removed by scraping may remain visible after varnishing the old parquet. Water-based matte varnish allows to slightly neutralize the difference in color between light and dark areas.
