- Work procedure
- Replacing glass in a plastic window
Let's consider in detail how to replace a broken window glass with a plastic window and a simple wooden frame, all this can be done with your own arms. If the transom is in a hard-to-reach place, then it is best to remove it from its hinges and lay it on a horizontal surface before starting work. Be careful when handling glass. Do not lay it flat on the floor to avoid stepping on. Leaning the glass against the wall, throw a bright rag or newspaper over it.
To insert glass into the window you will need:
- window glass;
- roulette;
- glazing bead;
- chisel;
- a hammer;
- silicone sealant;
- construction gun;
- pliers;
- sharp knife;
- hacksaw.
Work procedure
- Wear thick leather or cotton gloves. When working with glass, you must protect your hands from accidental cuts.
- Apply a generous amount of tape, masking tape, or duct tape to the cracked glass surface. Unfold a few sheets of newspaper on the windowsill to avoid scratching the paint.
-
Now you need to clean off the putty or remove the glazing bead, depending on what kind of fastening the glass has in the frame. Scrape off the putty with a sharp knife or thin screwdriver. To remove it where it has dried and hardened, tap the handle of a knife or screwdriver with a hammer. You can soften the putty with hot air from a hair dryer or a soldering iron.
How to insert glass into a window Pull out the studs or hairpins flat with pliers. Remove the staple by gently prying it off with a screwdriver or chisel.
- Pull the broken glass out of the frame. Pre-lay newspaper sheets on the floor or on the table, put glass fragments in them. Roll up and take out the trash.
- Sand the wood rebates in the window frame until smooth. Fragments of nails should not stick out, bumps from putty or wooden burrs should not protrude. Work with a chisel, file and pliers.
- Take measurements for glass. Measure the internal values against the cleaned folds. Subtract 3 mm from each dimension. This must be done so that the glass does not burst during expansion. Order glass cutting according to your dimensions in a special workshop. Measure how much glazing bead you need.
- Buy glazing beads and white or clear silicone sealant from your hardware store. If you carefully pulled out the glazing bead when removing the glass, then you can use the old one. When buying a sealant, pay attention to the instructions on the packaging. The window frame will be exposed to high temperature extremes, so the silicone must be suitable. When using a sealant in tubes, you need a construction gun. Or buy a sealant packaged in syringes, but this is not profitable.
- Saw the glazing bead to size with a fine-toothed hacksaw. Stuff thin window studs into it so that when positioned in the frame, the studs run parallel to the glass.
- Coat all folds with silicone sealant. Place a couple of gap matches on the bottom of the frame and install the glass. Gently press it against the frame from all sides, pull out the matches.
- Nail the glazing bead. The bead must be covered with paint. This can be done before installing it in the frame or during the complete painting of the window.
