For many people, linoleum was, is and will be the optimal floor covering. It is rare that a repair is complete without the use of this material. There are many reasons for this, but it is necessary to highlight the most basic advantages:
- the resistance of linoleum to external changes - whether it is a decrease or increase in humidity, temperature, etc.;
- its functionality - allows you to effectively and quickly clean the surface of dirt;
- unpretentious operation - after laying, linoleum does not require any maintenance, in addition to cleaning;
- it is hard enough to find any floor covering cheaper than linoleum;
- ease of installation - allows installation without the involvement of specialists.
Stages of laying linoleum with your own hands
It is not surprising that linoleum, having such a set of qualities, is widespread. After the linoleum is chosen, you must, of course, start with planning. At this stage, the main thing is to determine the coverage area and the amount of material. The most important thing is not to make a mistake in calculating the area, regardless of what shape the room has a complex or rectangular one. All walls should be measured around the perimeter.

The thing is that in high-rise buildings, even opposite walls may well be of different lengths. The negligent builders are to blame for everything. As a result, linoleum on the one hand may fit perfectly, but on the other it may not be enough. In order to avoid such annoying oversights, it is better to measure it seven times, and only then cut it off. When the dimensions are all removed and linoleum is purchased, the preparatory stages begin.
The DIY linoleum laying technique is very easy to learn, the video below shows good examples. If you understand everything, then doing it yourself will not be difficult. However, you will not have to chill. In order for linoleum to lay down well for a long time, it is necessary to prepare the base well. Undoubtedly, this is the most responsible and important part of the work. If it is done well, then consider that half the battle has already been done.
Preparing the subfloor before laying
In a room with a plank floor, the flooring should be firmly fixed. A movable, fragile base will someday lead to deformation of the coating. Therefore, it is necessary to take all precautions in advance. Plywood is laid on the plank floor, which is screwed on with self-tapping screws. The resulting base should be perfectly flat. It is necessary to pay attention to the fact that the caps of the screws are not protruded.

Undoubtedly, concrete is the best base for laying linoleum. However, the process of flooring does not become less laborious from this. Armed with a building level, you need to check for unevenness and slope. If this is found, then it will be necessary to make a screed from a sand-cement mixture. It will be enough to fill the base with a seven centimeter thick. After that, it is recommended to make a finishing screed from the self-leveling mixture.
In this case, be sure that the foundation will turn out perfectly even and you will never have to return to this issue again. In addition, a strong and even concrete floor will come in handy if after a while there is a desire to replace the linoleum with some other floor covering.
How to lay linoleum correctly
Oddly enough, but the main stage of laying linoleum in parallel is also the finishing one. If the room is planned to be covered not with one canvas, but with several segments, then the main thing is that the linoleum pattern matches in its finished form. After cutting the canvas, it should be spread in the room, and left to lie down for about a couple of days at normal room temperature. This will help avoid creases and dents.
It should be remembered that installation will be easier if the canvas itself and the surface are flat. Linoleum must be cut so that its edges do not reach the walls by about a centimeter.
There are three main styling methods:
- without the use of adhesives;
- using cold mastic;
- using glue.
In a domestic environment, it is of course more convenient to use double-sided tape or glue for linoleum. These are the simplest methods of installation, which, in addition to everything else, are the least expensive financially.
Naturally, the most reliable and durable way is to lay linoleum with your own hands using glue. One side is bent to the middle of the linoleum and a layer of glue is applied to it with a spatula. Then it must be exposed to air for a while. After that, the linoleum is placed in its place, and air is squeezed out from under it with a special burlap or trowel. A similar operation is carried out with the second half.
If we talk about the glueless method of self-laying linoleum, then this method should be used very carefully. The entire canvas is glued with double-sided tape around the perimeter and fixed to the base. The most important thing is to completely and correctly smooth out folds and other irregularities, so that after that you do not have to redo all the work. Finally, a wooden or plastic skirting board is installed. This completes the installation of linoleum. Now check out the video tutorials to visually consolidate information. Happy renovation!
