Today we will look at electrical outlets for a kitchen stove, as well as the correct connection of an electric stove with our own hands.
Household appliances and, in particular, cookers consume a significant amount of electricity, which requires mandatory grounding of the case. The complete set of domestic stoves for sale most often consists of RSh-VSh connectors - a pair from an electrical outlet and a plug. This type of connector was created in Soviet times. According to the method of installing the socket, it belongs to the products of open wiring, but in our time it has been modified for hidden wiring.
The constructive solution of the pair excludes the possibility of incorrect connection during use. The maximum declared operating current is 32 amperes (average power 7 kW). However, the total power of heating devices of modern electric stoves is on average 8-10 kW and more, which is unacceptable for this connector. The simultaneous inclusion of all devices will be fatal for the connector. Today the production of RSh-VSh in Ukraine, the price and quality of products are not high.

Stove electrical sockets
A pair of Belarusian-made plugs and sockets is quite good. They have a modern design and are more suitable for imported electric stoves, which do not include cords and plugs.

Belarusian connectors can withstand large volumes of electrical power than 32A, and are more convenient to use and install. They are installed in two versions, for both hidden and exposed wiring. At a price slightly more expensive than Ukrainian ones, but much cheaper than European ones.

Sockets for electric stoves are installed in the same way as ordinary electrical outlets. When installing for hidden wiring, a recess is hollowed out in the wall, into which a socket box of any shape is installed using a special solution based on plaster. In the direction of the display unit, a groove is hollowed out in the wall and the supply wires are laid into it, connecting them to the socket terminals. It is very important to connect the ground wire strictly to the terminal marked.

Then the socket mechanism is fixed with special screws in the socket box, at the end of the work, the cover is put on. Installation with open wiring is accompanied by fixing the socket mechanism directly to the supporting surface of the wall without an additional socket. Be sure to connect the ground wire.
In newly built apartments, the ground wire is visible immediately, its insulation is green (yellow-green). In older houses, all wires are solid and usually white. To find the right wire, first, the electricity in the apartment is turned off completely. Then they take an ohmmeter and one of its probe clings to a heating radiator or a water pipe, and with the second they alternately touch the ends of the supply wires. If the wire is grounding, the ohmmeter will show insignificant resistance, no more than a couple of ten ohms, on the other wires the resistance will be infinitely strong. Thus, the detected ground wire is marked with a marker or electrical tape for further simplicity in contrast. The order in which the remaining wires are connected is not important. See the article about new and old ways of connecting electrical wires, it will be useful for everyone. Now let's look at what the electrical stove connection diagram looks like in photo examples and descriptions.
How to connect the electric stove correctly
To connect an electric stove you will need:
- Connectors. If an outlet is available, only the appropriate plug is needed.
- Wire coil PVA 3 * 4 mm 2. Flexible, three-core, length 1.5-2 m.
On the rear panel, under the plastic cover of the electric plate, there is a terminal block with several copper jumpers. Opening the lid, you can see a picture next to it, usually depicting 3 connection options:
- three-phase power supply - L1, L2, L3. N. PE.
- two-phase supply network - L1, L2. N1, N2. PE.
- single-phase power supply - L1. N. PE.
A suitable option is the third, we can use it to connect the electric stove correctly. Jumpers are installed according to the figure. Then, on the PVA wire, the upper sheath is removed from both sides by 75 mm and the insulation from the ends of the cores by 30 mm, they are sealed with a ring. The conductor with green insulation is attached to the PE earthing terminal, the remaining ones alternately to the L1 and N terminals (phase and zero). It is preferable to connect wires for phase conductors with brown or white insulation, and blue for zero, but this is not critical.

After that the electrical plug is connected. The green-insulated wire is attached to the grounding contact, the rest - to the phase and zero.

The correct connection is checked with a multimeter: the resistance between the grounding contact of the plug and the metal body of the furnace is shown to be zero. It goes without saying that the grounding pin of the plug and outlet match. If everything is as expected, the terminal block is closed with a lid. See how to install the socket correctly.
It is recommended to remove the voltage from the outlet before inserting the plug into it by turning off the machine in the electrical panel. Having done this, check the absence of a phase by touching the indicator screwdriver to the metal surface of the plate body. If there is order, a further check is carried out in all operating modes.
The kitchen electric stove is to some extent a stationary device, since it has not moved from the same place for years. And in fact there is an option to connect it without an outlet. It is shown in the figure below. The electric stove is connected via a ceramic or carbolite terminal block located in the junction box.

If there is a three-phase power line, it is best to connect the electric stove to it. This is necessary especially with heavy loads on the stove, for example, in small cozy restaurants, the total power of the devices is much higher than 10 kW, which a single-phase connector cannot withstand for a long time. The three-phase connector RSh-VSh is designed for a maximum current of 25A and allows powering the device with a power of up to 15 kW. Moreover, a copper cable with a cross section of 2.5 mm 2 will be enough. Use our free online calculator to calculate the required wire size.
