Wall painting technology with water-based paint

It is difficult to imagine high-quality modern renovation today without the use of high-tech materials, and paints, which have special requirements, are no exception. Among them are water-based paints, in which coloring pigments and a binder are the dispersion element.

After the surface covered with paint dries, a hardened polymer film forms on it, which protects the walls and ceiling from the harmful effects of moisture. In addition, water-based paint is considered an environmentally friendly material and does not emit harmful toxins.

Do-it-yourself painting of walls with water-based paint is quite a fascinating and interesting process. Before proceeding with the choice of painting materials, you should familiarize yourself with some of the characteristics and features of paints, their types and in what cases they are used.

Water-based paints have a number of characteristics:

  • Lack of harsh odors and vapors. They are completely harmless to the body, and paint work can be performed for a long time.
  • It dries very quickly and makes the surface beautiful and attractive.
  • Thanks to special dyes, paint of any color and shade can be made.
  • The process of painting surfaces with water-based paints does not present any particular difficulties, besides, all working tools and accessories are easily washed off with running water.
  • The paint is very economical. Its approximate consumption is 1 liter. by 7 m 2.
  • What are the water-dispersed paints and their types.

Due to the peculiarity of their composition, water-based paints are also called water-dispersed. Depending on the polymer components, water-based paints are divided into the following types:

Water-based paints, which basically contain an aqueous solution of dyes and water glass, are called silicate. Their characteristic feature is resistance to environmental influences and they are also gas-tight.

The painted surface retains its attractive appearance for a fairly long period of time, moreover, the paint on it can last for several decades. When working with silicate paints, it is necessary to strictly follow the manufacturer's recommendations for their use, since they contain alkalis in their composition.

Silicone water-based paints are used for painting reinforced concrete products, brick structures and building facades that require special moisture-resistant treatment.

For interior and exterior finishing works on concrete and walls made of various types of bricks, water-based mineral paint is used. It is made on a cement basis or with the addition of hydrated lime. Painting of walls with water-based paint based on mineral components can be carried out in conditions of high humidity. It perfectly protects wall surfaces from aggressive external factors, however, its duration is short.

Painting the walls with water-based paint based on polyvinyl acetate emulsion has certain advantages. They consist in the fact that such a paint can be diluted with water and work with it in an unventilated enclosed space. After drying, a high-strength film forms, which is resistant to direct sunlight, moisture and various fats, including mineral oils. Often used for repairs in production shops and auto repair shops.

Particular attention should be paid to acrylic water-based paints, which are especially popular. In their production, acrylic resins are used, which give the dried surface special strength and elasticity. Among other types of paints, acrylics are the most expensive, however, they have a high level of quality.

There are cheaper options, such as vinyl acrylic or acrylic silicone paints, but their quality and physical properties are slightly worse. The most expensive are acrylic paints, which have a latex base. The dried painted surface can be washed as much as necessary, and it will not lose its appearance for a very long time.

Sometimes careful preparation of walls for painting with latex-based water-based paint is not necessary at all. This applies to almost perfect surfaces with small cracks that disappear without a trace after applying such a paint.

A distinctive characteristic of acrylic water-based paints is their low gas permeability. In this regard, they are recommended for painting reinforced concrete structures, since they prevent corrosion and premature deterioration.

No less popular are silicone water-based paints, which are based on an aqueous dispersion of resins. They have excellent vapor permeability and water-repellent effect. In addition to reinforced concrete, they are suitable for all types of surfaces, even in rooms with high humidity (bath or kitchen). In addition, they can be easily combined with many types of paints, which is very convenient for finishing work.

Silicone paints are highly elastic. This property can be used to hide seams and cracks on wall surfaces up to several mm deep. Also, due to its composition, various microorganisms do not multiply on surfaces painted with silicone paints. Therefore, the appearance of mold and mildew in the house is excluded. To calculate how much paint you need, the online paint consumption calculator will help.

Wall painting technology with water-based paint

Before using water-based paint, it must be thinned. This can be done with water or a solvent, however, in any case, the solvent must comply with the manufacturer's recommendations, which can be found on the package label. Before the actual painting itself, you need to stir the paint and bring to a uniform consistency. You can purchase ordinary white paint and a color scheme for it of the required shade, and then stir thoroughly and get the required tone at the exit.

The question of how to prepare walls for painting with water-based paint can be briefly answered as follows. First, the walls are cleaned of the remnants of wallpaper, old plaster and paint, leveled, primed, then putty and sanded clean. Walls and ceilings are polished to perfect condition so that they are even and smooth. After that, the walls are primed with a composition for deep impregnation. When the surfaces are dry, you can start painting.

Painting the walls with water-based paint, the design of which you can think over yourself, should be carried out using a special painting tool. To do this, you need to choose a good roller, spray gun or brushes, as well as various trays and containers for paint. Layers of paint must be applied in parallel stripes and avoid bald patches and excessive build-up. The next layer should be applied perpendicular to the previous one. The same technology should be followed when painting the ceiling, making sure that the layers of paint are applied evenly.
