When deciding on the decoration of walls and ceilings, a standard formula is often used - covering with one material. This option has the right to exist. The room looks harmonious, and all the interior details are very easy to combine. But sometimes you want some kind of zest, which would also easily fit into the interior, but at the same time did not spoil the aesthetics. In this case, you can install the molding on the wall, how to fix it and what to stick on and it will be discussed.

What is molding?

Molding is a decorative material. It looks like a volumetric bar that fits onto the surface. The plank length is standard and does not exceed 240cm. Width, design, profile - all these can have different parameters. You can use completely flat moldings, or resort to decorating the room with volumetric strips. Models with various decorative elements and a complex texture look very beautiful. But such moldings need to be properly aligned with the overall concept of interior design.

The decor element can be made from various materials. The most popular are plastic, polyurethane, polystyrene. They are also quite different in flexibility. They can be elastic or very hard. The first ones are much more expensive, therefore they are resorted to only if necessary, when it is not possible to process this section of the wall with a solid one.

The most expensive are PVC or gypsum moldings, and the first place in this regard is occupied by marble strips. The use of such models is typical in cases where the designer's task is to decorate the premises in an aristocratic or classical style.

Mounting

The installation of the planks is quite simple. In order for the wall decoration with molding to be done correctly, it is necessary to first prepare the surface and prime it. The planks sit on the back of the glue. It has an absolutely flat surface, so it should fit snugly to the plane that you are going to decorate. If the planks have a complex pattern, then before gluing it is necessary to make markings on the wall. The main thing is to choose the right guides. This can be done using a level and a construction pencil. It is important to remember that the moldings are attached before plastering and painting the walls. An exception may be the case when the surface finish will be carried out with wallpaper. In order not to stain the wallpaper, painting and processing of planks must be done before pasting.

In modern conditions, white doors are the latest fashion. In order to mount the door leaf, platbands are often used. As a rule, they must be ordered from a special workshop. And this is a waste of time. You can replace them with moldings. The composition will look ideal if a white plinth is also laid in the room.

Very often, wall decoration with molding solves more serious problems than just decoration. For example, by installing strips around the perimeter of the window, you can visually enlarge the window opening. Of course, this will not add light, but the issue of visual expansion of space will be resolved.

With the help of this material, imitation of panels is often made. This option for wall decoration looks very beautiful when several types of coatings are used in the room. It is very simple to do this, it is enough to paste over the joints with a light molding. But the result is really amazing.

The most traditional way is to decorate the walls with moldings by pasting the strips over the entire surface area. For this, standard, rectangular strips are used, which are set on glue. If it was not possible to choose the color of the decoration itself to match the wall, it can be painted.

If you like the classic, curved sections are the best solution for you. With the help of such planks, you can create a unique interior in the style of the 60-90s.

What kind of moldings are there?

The strips, in addition to the material of manufacture, also differ in shape. The most popular ones are:

  • Cornice - wall decoration with moldings of this type consists in masking the cornice or aluminum profile of the window frame. Such models have a simple and unpretentious shape, without a decorated plaque, sometimes you can find a molding cornice with a pattern applied;
  • Plinth - such elements have the form of a standard strip with a rounded section or in the form of a semicircle. Moldings of this type are used in order to decorate the joint between the wall and the ceiling surface;
  • Baguettes are rich in texture. Best suited for arranging frames that surround various decorative elements (paintings, figurines, flowers, etc.);
  • Compositions - wall decoration with moldings can also be performed using ready-made compositions. In this case, the strips are supplied as a ready-made solution, for example: an arch, a flower rosette, a column, stucco molding, etc.

Each of the above types of moldings has a self-adhesive base, this greatly simplifies the installation process. For installation, you just need to mark and prepare the surface to be treated. The exceptions are wooden, plaster and marble counterparts. Their installation is quite complicated and requires certain skills, as well as the use of additional building components.
