Liquid wallpaper is an original and attractive decorative material that exists in the finishing industry today. Why among all the varieties of wallpaper, it is they that attract the attention of buyers. In the article presented to your attention, we will try to answer the question asked, as well as talk about how liquid wallpaper is applied to the wall surface. Nowadays, a lot of wallpapers of different quality and methods of application and structure have appeared on the construction market.
If you want to make the right choice, you need to know a lot about them, but there are multifunctional wallpapers that are suitable for all walls, and especially not even ones, these are liquid wallpapers.
What is liquid wallpaper?
In the package, this type of wallpaper is somewhat reminiscent of ordinary light-colored sawdust, but in fact it is a wallpaper material that consists of a dry mixture impregnated with glue. After the completion of the work, its appearance becomes more like a small foam.
In our modern world, there are only five types of liquid wallpaper - which differ from each other in the thickness of the final layer and the structure of the fibers. The compacted version is somewhat similar to fabric, since its finished thickness ranges from 4 to 5 millimeters, and the thickness of a thin layer is from 2 to 3 millimeters.
The porous structure of this type of wallpaper not only retains heat well, but also has excellent sound insulation properties. About such wallpapers they say that they "breathe", as well as are environmentally friendly material. But the main advantage of liquid wallpaper is that when the walls shrink, they are subject to deformation and in no case will break from this.

Wallpaper composition
Liquid wallpaper looks like regular wallpaper, but you can't buy it in a roll. Wallpaper is a powdery substance packed in a box.

They include mica, natural dyes, cellulose and cotton fibers, and gold threads are added to give the desired effect.

Various inclusions can be added to this standard list:
- wood flour or sawdust;
- mica;
- seaweed;
- stone chips;
- various textured inclusions;
- sparkles, etc.
In terms of their structure, different brands differ from each other. At the same time, pay attention to the texture of the material, as well as how easily they stretch over the surface and smooth under the float. The thickness of the layer, the consumption of material and the appearance of the finished wall depend on this.
What is the plus of such wallpaper?
Advantages of liquid wallpaper. Such wallpaper is very easy to stick to the wall, filling all the spaces and cracks. Ideal for hard-to-reach areas such as around outlets or in corners. The seams after them are not visible! Even fabrics such as silk or gold thread are added to their composition, thanks to which they give a stunning effect when you use them to glue a living room, for example, or a hall.

In addition, liquid wallpaper has a wide range of colors, this will also help you achieve the desired effect. For those who love originality in everything, it is worth giving preference to liquid wallpaper. Of course, they are also originally expensive, but after finishing the apartment with liquid wallpaper, you will get an amazing effect!

There are other advantages of liquid wallpaper: such wallpapers can be applied on uneven, unaligned walls - glued in a new house without waiting for it to shrink (shrinkage is not terrible with liquid wallpaper) - can be applied to metal, for example, pipes - have sound insulation and thermal insulation - fireproof (fire will not burn on the wallpaper) - it will easily get rid of stains, dirt (you need to remove the dirty stain and stick a clean new layer) - there is no dust on their surface, it cannot accumulate there, because the fabric that is part of liquid wallpaper does not has an electrical charge. Fantasies in the use of liquid wallpaper are endless and allow you to apply the composition to the ceiling.

Disadvantages of liquid wallpaper
Despite the significant advantages of this type of wallpaper, there are also no less significant disadvantages. For example, this wallpaper can be easily washed off the wall surface with plain water. Of course, this disadvantage can be attributed to its merit, but for everyday life it is not very convenient. Therefore, to make liquid wallpaper more resistant to wet cleaning, a colorless protective varnish is applied to their surface with a thin layer. With such treatment, the surface of the wall will not lose its beauty from wet cleaning, but it will no longer be able to "breathe".
Liquid wallpaper is difficult to clean from dirt if accidentally gets dirty. Many manufacturers write that such wallpapers are moisture resistant, but they are not intended for washing. Therefore, if in some place the wallpaper is too dirty, this can be eliminated in only one way - remove a layer of plaster in this place, knead a new mixture and apply to this place. With little experience, there is a high probability that this area will stand out against the background of the entire wall, which is unlikely to add attractiveness to the room. Therefore, you should be careful with such a coating so that you do not accidentally stain it again.
The biggest drawback is the high price compared to traditional wallpaper. And although today the effect of the novelty of the finish has passed, therefore the price is falling, but it is not yet necessary to say that the prices of the two types will be equal. In addition, a beginner who is trying to apply liquid wallpaper to walls or ceiling for the first time will have to spend a little. After all, you still have to spoil one or two packages.

Surface preparation rules
The wall or ceiling must be leveled before gluing liquid wallpaper. We are talking about large surface drops and unevenness. It is possible, in principle, to carry out the alignment directly with liquid wallpaper, but in this case, their consumption will increase significantly.
In order for the base to be prepared with high quality, it is enough to remove the old decorative layer from the wall and plaster the cracks and pits found under it. To prevent yellow spots from appearing on the walls after the liquid wallpaper dries, the wall must be covered with a waterproofing primer twice.
In addition, all metal elements on the prepared surface must be painted over with enamel so that rust does not appear on the liquid wallpaper. After that, the wall should dry completely, and it is desirable that the temperature in the room was about + 20 ° C.
How to apply liquid wallpaper on hopprom walls
First you need to clean the wall of old wallpaper, plaster, putty, remove hangers, nails, sockets. Treat the walls from the fungus. Now we are preparing liquid wallpaper, for this, mix the powder in a clean dish, this is the wallpaper itself, and dry additives. Next, pour in water and mix. The temperature should be at least 15 degrees in the room.

If you will apply the wallpaper yourself, then you need to let them stand in a stirred form for about 30 minutes, and if you use a gun, then glue it immediately. Note: a hopper pistol is certainly a good thing, but it cannot be used on walls with Danish plaster (decorative). The kit includes a compressor, the pressure should be 3-5 atmospheres. This set can be rented. After you have mastered the application of the wallpaper, it is completely dry after 72 hours, you need to be careful indoors. You can varnish the liquid wallpaper on top and you can wipe it. These wallpapers are designed by the French, and they are the leaders in this market, and their products are in great demand.
So, to apply such wallpaper to the surface, you will need the following tools:
The container in which the mixture will be diluted.
Partial mixing of the package is not allowed. This is due to the fact that the binding components (including glue) in the package are in a dry state. During transportation, it may turn out that in one place of the package the components are in a greater concentration than in another part of it. When mixing a part of the package, the binding components in this part of the package may not be in the required concentration, and the wallpaper will not meet all the characteristics declared by the manufacturer. Be careful!
Embossed roller or spatula (if you have a hopper gun or a spray gun with a pressure of 0, 4-0, 5 MPa, then with the help of them it will be possible to quickly and evenly apply liquid wallpaper to the walls of your room).
If you decide to give your home an original look and make a drawing on the wallpaper, then you will need a pump roller.
For finishing work, you must have a colorless varnish.
Before you start applying liquid wallpaper, you should carefully prepare the surface of the walls.
A little room temperature water is added to the required amount of dry liquid wallpaper. Stir and let the solution stand for 15 minutes. If necessary, you can add dye there and mix everything thoroughly.
A small amount of the mixture is applied to the wall surface and rolled out with a roller in all directions. Attaching all the necessary parts continues in the same way. It is necessary to ensure that the surface to be applied is even, without bumps and empty spaces with the rolled parts of the mixture.
If suddenly it did not work out to roll out correctly or for some other reason why it is necessary to remove the coating from the surface, then this can be done if the mixture is slightly moistened with water. After that, the same piece of coating can be reapplied to the wall and so on up to 3 times. In this case, the adhesive should not be washed off.
As already mentioned in this article, using a knurling roller, you can create your own unique pattern.

Applying liquid wallpaper by hand
Pour the shine (purchased separately) into a container with water, distribute it evenly in the water.
Shake the contents of the bag, distributing the free-flowing mixture evenly. Then completely pour the contents of the package into a container with water.
Be careful!
The rest of the material can always be dried and used at any time.
Mix the composition by hand
Stir by hand, straining the mixture between your fingers (to avoid the formation of glue lumps). All ingredients are natural and absolutely harmless to the skin.
ATTENTION! knead only with a drill with a mixing nozzle at low speeds.
Prepare just as much mix as is enough to apply to the entire surface from corner to corner!
Withstand the soaked mass for the recommended time - 12 hours, using a packing bag from liquid wallpaper for easy storage.
After 12 hours, mix several bags in a common plastic container, mix well by hand. Liquid wallpaper is ready for application.
Slight color fluctuations are possible from batch to batch, it is recommended to replenish the plastic container as the mixture is consumed, mixing new material with the remaining mass.
Applying liquid wallpaper
Apply the prepared mixture in small portions with a plastic grater or mastrek. The grater should be at an angle of 10-15 degrees to the material, forming a wedge. The optimum layer thickness is 1.5-2 mm.

The material can be applied using special compressor equipment for applying liquid wallpaper.
For ease of application, you can add up to 1 liter of room temperature water per bag.
For an ideal application of SILK PLASTER after 1–2 hours, using side lighting, smooth the surface with a trowel, dampening it in water.
Drying liquid wallpaper from 12 to 24 hours
The air temperature in the room should not be lower than +15 ° С, the humidity should be normal. Drying time for liquid wallpaper: 24–48 hours, depending on temperature and humidity. Ventilation is recommended.
Use SILK PLASTER branded varnish to increase wear resistance and impart moisture protection properties to the material.
