There are axes with rounded and straight blades:

  1. The ax with a straight blade is suitable for chopping wood.
  2. An ax with a rounded blade is required for finishing.

An important part of the ax, namely the handle, is made of hardwood, for example:

  • maple;
  • ash;
  • hornbeam;
  • birch.

The wood must be free of knots, cracks, mold and rot. The hatchet is carefully ground, first of all with coarse-grained, and then with fine-grained sandpaper. Then cover with a layer of varnish mixed with 11-12% ocher.

To increase the service life of the ax, it must be coated with a colorless varnish.

In order to cut holes, cut through the wire and individual strips of metal, chisels of various types are used:

  1. A metal oval chisel made of special tool steel is used to cut steel with a thickness of about 1 mm.
  2. A Kogan chisel with a sufficiently wide cutting part is used in order to cut through steel sheets up to 1 mm thick.

Small parts are preliminarily clamped in a vice and cut along the outlined lines, and parts with large dimensions are also chopped along the outlined lines, but only on a table covered with 13-15 mm sheet steel.

When cutting in a vise, make sure that the cutting edge of the chisel is flush with the vise jaws. For this purpose, the part is clamped so that the risk is aligned with the edge of the vise liner. Parts made of steel with a thickness of up to 1.5 mm are chopped off in 1 step, and those with a thickness of 1.6 mm - in 2 steps.

Rules for working with a chisel

Here are the basic rules for working with this tool:

  1. In the process of cutting, it is important to ensure the movement of the cutting edge of the tool strictly along the marked line.
  2. With the left hand, the tool is held at a slight angle to the part to be cut off.
  3. Hit the chisel with a hammer.
  4. After making holes on one side of the part, it is turned over to the other side and the same is done, and then the part is broken by hand.
  5. When cutting parts, it is necessary to ensure that small pieces flying off to the side do not injure people nearby.

Chisels are sharpened in exactly the same way as scissors.
