Useful properties and application of tincture and extract of Eleutherococcus

Botanical characteristics of Eleutherococcus

eleutherococcus
eleutherococcus

Eleutherococcus is a thorny shrub with highly branched horizontal rhizomes. The trunks of the plant are branching, reaching 4 meters in height, covered with thin numerous thorns. On the tall trunks of the plant are complex leaves on long petioles. In addition to the main leaves, there are also other leaves that are sharp at one end, but these leaves also have long petioles. Small, but very fragrant flowers of the plant are located at the top of the shoot, collected in an inflorescence - an umbrella - or are located alone. The plant has a pronounced feature: one bush has flowers of three types at once, namely male, female and bisexual.

Eleutherococcus blooms in late summer, and the fruits of Eleutherococcus ripen in early - mid-autumn. The fruit of Eleutherococcus is a black berry, the shape of which is spherical. Inside the fruit there are large seed-bones with flattened sides. Due to the fact that the seeds have an underdeveloped embryo, they can germinate only in the second year.

Eleutherococcus can be seen in Japan, Russia, China and Korea. This plant is also grown in the Amur region, Primorye and on the territory of South Sakhalin. Most often, the plant grows in light areas in forests, on mountain slopes and between shrubs.

Cultivation of Eleutherococcus

This plant reproduces in a variety of ways. The method of reproduction depends on the terrain and the desire of the person. Eleutherococcus is propagated by green cuttings, layering, seeds, bush division and root suckers.

If you decide to propagate Eleutherococcus by seed, then the very first action will be seed stratification. To do this, the seeds are placed in wet sand and kept in it for 3-4 months at a temperature of 18 ° C above zero. After the seeds have stood for this time in a warm place, they are transferred to a cool room (not higher than 4 ° C Celsius) and they will stay there for another 4 months. Why are 2 stages of stratification needed? The answer is simple: warm stratification promotes the development of the embryo in the seed, while cold exposure brings the seed out of dormancy. As a result of these two stages of stratification, after sowing the seeds, friendly and strong shoots will appear.

Seeds are sown into the soil thickly and shallowly. If the soil is light, then the sowing can be done deeper. The plant grows and develops slowly, therefore only by the third year of life it will have a height of 20 cm. It is for this reason that the transplant is done 4 years after the shoots have emerged.

More often this plant is propagated by rhizome shoots, since this method is more effective than seed. To do this, separate parts of the rhizomes 15 cm in length and plant them in prepared soil. At the end of June, the plant is propagated by cuttings of green shoots. Having planted green cuttings in the soil, they need to be shaded, shingles shields with gaps up to 2 cm will fit for this role.

It is not difficult to take care of the plant, since it only needs regular watering and feeding. Mineral and organic fertilizers are best suited for fertilizing. In regions with little snow cover, the plants are covered for the winter - this will prevent the plant from dying. Eleutherococcus loves to gnaw mice, so after winter the plant can be severely damaged.

You can easily grow Eleutherococcus from cuttings or seeds. It should be noted that the process itself usually takes considerable time. Before planting in a suitable soil, it is recommended to stratify the seeds to increase their germination, after which in the middle of spring the seeds can be sown into the soil to a depth of no more than 3 cm. They sprout slowly and not all at the same time, some of the seeds will show their sprouts no earlier than a year or two. A shorter propagation method is cuttings. It is recommended to cut the cuttings at the end of June, soak them in a special solution, after which they can be planted in a darkened place or a greenhouse with an interval of about 10 cm. All sprouts should be covered with a special dense film before growing. For the winter, cuttings are covered, and with the arrival of spring they can be transplanted to a permanent place along with an earthen lump.

Eleutherococcus prefers fertile soils, so do not forget about organic fertilizers. Caring for such a plant is simple, it involves regular watering and removal of dry branches. In good conditions, the shrub will bloom about 4 years after planting.
